Bacillus pumilus RS7에 의한 난분해성 케라틴 분해효소의 생산 및 아미노산 공급원으로서 우모 분해산물 (Production of Keratinolytic Protease by Bacillus pumilus RS7 and Feather Hydrolysate As a Source of Amino Acids)

  • Feathers are produced in huge quantities as a waste product at commercial poultry processing plants. Since feathers are almost pure keratin protein, feather wastes represent an alternative to more expensive dietary ingredients for animal feedstuffs. Generally they become feather meal used as animal feed after undergoing physical and chemical treatments. These processes require significant energy and also cause environmental pollutions. Therefore, biodegradation of feather by microorganisms represents an alternative method to prevent environment contamination. The aim of this study was to investigate cultural conditions affecting keratinolytic protease production by Bacillus pumilus RS7. We also assessed the nutritive value of microbial and alkaline feather hydrolysates, The composition of optimal medium for the keratinolytic protease was fructose 0.05%, yeast extract 0.3%, NaCl 0.05%, K2HPO4 0.03%, KH2PO4 0.04% and MgCl2 6H2O 0.01%, respectively. The optimal temperature and initial pH was $30^{\circ}C$ and 9.0, respectively. The keratinolytic protease production under optimal condition reached a maximum after 18 h of cultivation. Total amino acid content of feather hydrolysates treated by NaOH and B. pumilius RS7 was $113.8\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $504.9\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Essential amino acid content of feather hydrolysates treated by NaOH and B. pumilius RS7 was $47.2\;{\mu}g/ml$ and $334.0\;{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Thus, feather hydrolysates have the potential for utilization as an ingredient in animal feed.

Postoperative malocclusion after maxillofacial fracture management: a retrospective case study

  • Purpose: Various complications occur when a maxillofacial fracture is malunionized or improperly resolved. Malocclusion is the most common complication, followed by facial deformity, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), and neurological symptoms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dental treatment of postoperative complications after maxillofacial fracture. Materials and methods: In this study, nine patients with a postoperative complication after maxillofacial fracture who had been performed the initial operation from other units and were referred to the authors' department had been included. Of the nine patients, six had mandibular fractures, one had maxillary fractures, one had maxillary and mandibular complex fractures, and one had multiple facial fractures. All the patients had tooth fractures, dislocations, displacements, and alveolar bone fractures at the time of trauma, but complications occurred because none of the patients underwent preoperative and postoperative dental treatment. Malocclusion and TMD are the most common complications, followed by dental problems (pulp necrosis, tooth extrusion, osteomyelitis, etc.) due to improper treatment of teeth and alveolar bone injuries. The patients were referred to the department of dentistry to undergo treatment for the complications. One of the nine patients underwent orthognathic surgery for a severe open bite. Another patient underwent bone reconstruction using an iliac bone graft and vestibuloplasty with extensive bone loss. The other patients, who complained of moderate occlusal abnormalities and TMDs such as mouth-opening limitation, underwent occlusal treatment by prosthodontic repair and temporomandibular joint treatment instead of surgery. Results: One patient who underwent orthognathic surgery had complete loss of open bite and TMD after surgery. One patient who underwent reconstruction using an iliac bone graft had a good healing process. Other patients were treated with splint, injection, and physical therapy for mouth-opening limitation and temporomandibular joint pain. After treatment, the TMDs were resolved, but the remaining occlusal abnormalities were resolved with prosthetic restoration. Conclusions: Considering the severity of malocclusion and TMJ symptom and the feasibillity of reoperation, nonsurgical methods such as orthodontic and prosthodontic treatments and splint therapy can be used to manage the dental and TMD complication after the trauma surgery. However, reoperation needs to be strongly considered for severe malocclusion and TMD problem.

Nonlinear Conte-Zbilut-Federici (CZF) Method of Computing LF/HF Ratio: A More Reliable Index of Changes in Heart Rate Variability

  • Objectives: Acupuncture treatments are safe and effective for a wide variety of diseases involving autonomic dysregulation. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a noninvasive method for assessing sympathovagal balance. The low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) spectral power ratio is an index of sympathovagal influence on heart rate and of cardiovascular health. This study tests the hypothesis that from rest to 30% to 50% of peak oxygen consumption, the nonlinear Conte-Zbilut-Federici (CZF) method of computing the LF/HF ratio is a more reliable index of changes in the HRV than linear methods are. Methods: The subjects of this study were 10 healthy young adults. Electrocardiogram RR intervals were measured during 6-minute periods of rest and aerobic exercise on a cycle ergometer at 30% and 50% of peak oxygen consumption ($VO_{2peak}$). Results: The frequency domain CZF computations of the LF/HF ratio and the time domain computations of the standard deviation of normal-to-normal intervals (SDNN) decreased sequentially from rest to 30% $VO_{2peak}$ (P < 0.001) to 50% $VO_{2peak}$ (P < 0.05). The SDNN and the CZF computations of the LF/HF ratio were positively correlated (Pearson's r = 0.75, P < 0.001). fast Fourier transform (FFT), autoregressive (AR) and Lomb periodogram computations of the LF/HF ratio increased only from rest to 50% $VO_{2peak}$. Conclusion: Computations of the LF/HF ratio by using the nonlinear CZF method appear to be more sensitive to changes in physical activity than computations of the LF/HF ratio by using linear methods. Future studies should determine whether the CZF computation of the LF/HF ratio improves evaluations of pharmacopuncture and other treatment modalities.

두개천골요법이 장기요양시설노인의 뇌기능지수에 미치는 효과 (The Effects of Cranio-Sacral Therapy on Brain Function Quotient of Elderly with Long-term Care Insurance Service)

  • 최근 CST 효과에 대한 많은 과학적 근거들이 활발히 제시되고 있으며, CST를 실제 임상에서 적극적으로 활용하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 CST가 장기요양시설노인의 뇌기능 향상에 효과가 있는지를 확인하기 위한 비동등성 대조군 전후 설계의 유사 실험연구이다. 2015년 1월 3일~2015년 2월 28일까지 장기요양시설노인 12명(실험군 6명, 대조군 6명)을 대상으로 Upledger가 개발한 10단계(10-Step Protocol) CST를 1회 50분, 주 1회, 8주간, 총 8회 적용하였다. 뇌기능 측정은 2 Channel neuro-feedback system 이동식 뇌파 측정기를 이용하여, CST 시술 시작 전과 마지막 시술 후에 뇌파를 측정하였으며, 한국정신과학연구소에서 개발한 뇌기능 분석 프로그램인 BQ test로 뇌기능지수를 분석하였다. 집단 간 자료의 분석은 SPSS Windows(Version 18.0)프로그램의 Mann-Whitney U-test를 사용하였다. 연구결과 뇌기능지수 중 주의지수(좌)(우), 주의지수의 하위지수인 긴장도(좌)(우), 항스트레스지수(좌)(우), 정서지수, 브레인지수에서 유의한 변화가 나타났고, 주의지수의 하위 지수인 주의비율에서만 유의하지 않았다. 이상의 결과로 CST가 시설노인의 뇌기능지수를 증가시켜 뇌기능을 향상시켰음을 확인할 수 있었으며, CST를 노인요양시설에서 건강과 뇌기능 향상을 위한 효과적인 중재방법으로 활용할 것을 제안한다.

직접 가열식 열탈착 공정을 이용한 유류오염토양의 정화 (Remediation of Petroleum-Contaminated Soil by a Directly-Heated Thermal Desorption Process)

  • 본 연구에서는 lab-scale의 열탈착 장치를 설계 및 제작하고 실제 유류오염 토양을 대상으로 다양한 운전조건에 따른 오염토양정화성능을 비교하였다. 대상 토양은 군부대로 사용되던 부지 내 유류저장소 부근 고농도 오염토로 선정하였고, 10 L 용적의 원통형 batch 형태의 직접 가열식 열탈착기를 사용하여 초기 TPH 농도 4476 ppm의 고농도 오염 토양시료를 다양한 운전조건에서 열탈착하여 처리효율 분석을 수행하였다. 열중량 분석을 통해 열탈착 실험에서 대상 오염물질을 제거하기 위한 토양 시료의 평균 가열온도는 $200-300^{\circ}C$가 적합한 것으로 확인하였다. Batch 형식의 운전을 통한 처리효율 분석 결과 토양 내 오염물질을 90% 이상 제거하기 위해서는 약 $200^{\circ}C$에서는 10분, 약 $300^{\circ}C$에서는 5분 이상의 처리 시간이 요구되었다. 함수율이 높고 덩어리진 토양일수록 처리효율, 특히 고분자 오염물질의 처리효율이 크게 감소함을 보였다. 따라서 풍건을 통하여 오염토양 내 수분을 저하시킨 후 분쇄 처리하여 열탈착기에 주입하는 것이 효과적이라 판단된다. 또한 처리 전 토양과 처리 후 토양의 물리화학적 특성 비교한 결과 고온에 의해 증발된 수분함량을 제외하고 나머지 특성들은 거의 변화가 없어 실제 복원현장에서 오염토양을 열탈착 공정을 이용하여 오염물질을 제거한 후 추가적인 후처리 과정 없이 처리토양을 원래 위치에 복원하는 것이 가능함을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과는 현장운전에서 오염물질의 제거 효율을 극대화하기위한 인자 결정 및 검증을 위한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

토양구조개선제(土壤構造改善劑) 처리(處理)가 토양물리성(土壤物理性)과 상추생육(生育)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of Some Soil Conditioners on Soil Physical Properties and Lettuce Growth)

  • 사토, 사양토, 양토, 식양토의 4개 토양에 Polyvinyalcohol(PVA), Polyacrylamide(PAM) 및 Bitumen을 분무처리하여 토양의 입단형성과 수분특성에 미친 영향을 조사하였으며 한편, Pot 재배 시험을 통하여 PAM 처리가 상추의 발아율과 생육에 미친 효과를 검토하였다. 2mm 이상의 입단함량(粒團含量)은 Soil conditioner를 처리하지 않은 토양에서 사토 0%, 사양토 45%, 양토 80%, 식양토 90%이었고 PVA, PAM 및 Bitumen의 처치에 의해서는 사도 20~52%, 사양토 55~76% 범위로 증가되었으나 양토와 식양토에서는 변화가 적었다. Soil conditioner 처리에 의해 내수성(耐水性) 입단(粒團)이 증가되었고 입단의 불안정성(不安定性)은 감소되었다. 토양(土壤)의 습윤각(濕潤角)은 PAV와 PAM 처리에서는 거의 변화가 없었으나 Bitumen 처리에 의해서는 무처리토양과 비교하여 크게 높아져서 소수성이 증가되었다. 침수성과 흡수성은 Bitumen 처리에 의해 모든 토성에서 물의 이동이 나타나지 않았으며 PVA와 PAM 처리에 의해서는 사토를 제외할 토성에서는 큰 변화가 없었다. PAM 처리에 의하여 상추의 발아율. 뿌리무게와 지상부 건물중이 무처리에 비해 크게 증가되고 그 효과는 사양토와 미사질양토에 비하여 사토에서 매우 컸는데 이는 PAM 처리에 의해 토양의 보수력과 기상비율이 함께 증가되어 상추생육을 촉진한 결과로 판단된다.

수술적으로 절제한 유선종양 79례 (Mammary Gland Tumors Treated by Surgical Excision : A Retrospective Study in 79 Dogs)

  • Mammary gland tumors are the most common neoplasms occurring in female dogs. The treatments of mammary gland tumors are surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiational therapy, but surgical removal remains widely accepted treatment option for mammary gland tumors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes of dogs which are performed surgical excision. Medical records were reviewed for dogs(79 cases) with mammary gland tumors treated surgically at Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Seoul National University from 2001 to 2005. While 49 cases(62.0%) were benign, 30 cases(38.0%) were malignant tumors. The mean age of these dogs was 10.4 years old(range $1{\sim}16$ years). The maximal diameter of malignant tumors were various, whereas most of the benign tumors were smaller than 3cm(36 cases, 73.5%). In 12 cases(15.2%), regional lymph nodes were enlarged and lymph nodes of 3 cases had resected surgically. The performed techniques were total mastectomy, regional mastectomy, simple mastectomy, lumpectomy and unilateral mastectomy in order. Twenty-eight cases(35.4%) had postoperative complications consisted of recurrence of tumors, necrosis, dehiscence, delayed healing and edema of limbs. The recurrence rates of benign and malignant mammary gland tumors were 8 cases(16.3%) and 6 cases(20.0%). Metastasis rate was 7 cases(8.9%). Although postoperative complications were no remarkable difference in recurrence rates among surgical techniques in this study, other complications such as edema of limbs, necrosis, dehiscence and delayed healing were remarkable difference as surgical techniques. Therefore, this result suggest that choice of appropriate surgical techniques should be determined according to each patient's physical status and characteristics of tumors.

뇌과학에 기반한 연령별 학습법과 연령별 한의학적 학습방법론 비교고찰 (A Review of Domestic Research for the Brain-science Based Learning According to Age and Comparison and Consideration of Learning Methodology of Korean Medicine According to Age)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to research learning based on brain science and the learning methodology of Korean Medicine according to disparity of age. Through this, the study aimed to provide a guideline to related Korean Medicine treatments as well as the common nurturing/educational institutions. Methods: All journals and dissertations on brain science based learning methods studied in Korea to date that could be found in the National Assembly Library and the RISS were implemented in the analysis. The terminology used for search was as follows: 1st search, 'Brain'; 2nd search, 'Learning', 'Education'; 3rd search, 'Baby, 'Infant', 'Child'. For the learning methodology of Korean Medicine according to disparity of age, the related contents were extracted from Donguibogam and Liuyi, Sasang constitutional medicine. Results: A total of 30 studies, were collected as data. In the baby stage, the development and myelination of brain neurons are accelerated by experience and learning, highly influenced by social, cognitive and emotional movement. In infancy, the frontal lobe actively develops, so education for development of the prefrontal cortex is suggested. The brain of the infant at this stage can be developed by arts and physical education. In the child stage, the parietal and temporal lobe develop actively. Thus, programs to stimulate brain activity including brain respiration would be helpful in enhancing learning ability, concentration, etc. As evidence for learning and nurturing methodology according to disparity of age from Korean Medicine prospective, the following are listed: Location and time for sexual intercourse before pregnancy, stabilization during pregnancy, baby nurturing methods for nurturing from Donguibogam. Also Liuyi and Sasanag constitutional medicine can be the learning methodology according to disparity of age. And there are acupuncture points on each head section according to age in Donguibogam. Conclusions: Studies on 'brain-science based learning' are continuously being conducted. Based on these studies, diverse new brain-science based learning will be developed in the future. There is also a need to develop the learning methodology of Korean Medicine according to disparity of age in a more systematic and diverse way.

Activin A/BMP2 Chimera (AB204) Exhibits Better Spinal Bone Fusion Properties than rhBMP2

  • Objective : To compare the spinal bone fusion properties of activin A/BMP2 chimera (AB204) with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP2) using a rat posterolateral spinal fusion model. Methods : The study was designed to compare the effects and property at different dosages of AB204 and rhBMP2 on spinal bone fusion. Sixty-one male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent posterolateral lumbar spinal fusion using one of nine treatments during the study, that is, sham; osteon only; $3.0{\mu}g$, $6.0{\mu}g$, or $10.0{\mu}g$ of rhBMP2 with osteon; and $1.0{\mu}g$, $3.0{\mu}g$, $6.0{\mu}g$, or $10.0{\mu}g$ of AB204 with osteon. The effects and property on spinal bone fusion was calculated at 4 and 8 weeks after treatment using the scores of physical palpation, simple radiograph, micro-computed tomography, and immunohistochemistry. Results : Bone fusion scores were significantly higher for $10.0{\mu}g$ AB204 and $10.0{\mu}g$ rhBMP2 than for osteon only or $1.0{\mu}g$ AB204. AB204 exhibited more prolonged osteoblastic activity than rhBMP2. Bone fusion properties of AB204 were similar with the properties of rhBMP2 at doses of 6.0 and $10.0{\mu}g$, but, the properties of AB204 at doses of $3.0{\mu}g$ exhibited better than the properties of rhBMP2 at doses of $3.0{\mu}g$. Conclusion : AB204 chimeras could to be more potent for treating spinal bone fusion than rhBMP2 substitutes with increased osteoblastic activity for over a longer period.

뇌졸중 후 요실금에 대한 침치료 임상진료지침 (Clinical Practice Guideline for acupuncture in Post-stroke urinary incontinence)

  • Objectives This study is aimed to develop a Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) on acupuncture treatment for the stroke patients with Post-stroke Urinary Incontinence(PSUI). Methods Experts committee, consisting of stroke or methodology specialists, searched Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and 19 Korean medicine journals. The search terms were selected to screen the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or systematic reviews for the effectiveness of acupuncture on PSUI, compared with placebo or conventional group. Levels of evidence and grades of recommendations were appraised based on Recommendations for Development of Clinical Practice Guideline in Korean Medicine. Results & Conclusions 8 RCT were included to build the CPG. There was a strong evidence to support the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for PSUI. The moderate evidence was presented that over 3 times a week of the acupuncture should be performed over 4 weeks on the acupoints, such as BL23, CV3, SP6, CV4, CV6, ST28, BL28, BL32, GV20, BL22, GV4 or ST36, for 15-30 minutes. 1-150 Hz frequency is suggested if electro-acupuncture treatments is performed with. It was also suggested that the procedure should begin at the acute stage just after the vital signs of the patients are stabilized. There was a moderate evidence to support safety of acupuncture treatment for PSUI. We recommend acu-points of constitutional acupuncture for Sasangin on the healthy side.
