  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was carried out to review for hydrotherapy, phototherapy, cupping therapy, therapeutic touch and massage as a Korean traditional physical therapy. Methods : This is literature study with books, and thesis. Results : The physical therapy that is in use nowadays has been around since human being started to live on the earth. In primitive times, when men were injured while hunting, they washed the wound in clinic water and dried it out in the sunshine, they also soaked their bodies in hot springs to decrease physical fatigue, Heating of injured tissue has been used for centuries for pain relief and muscle spasm. Conclusion : Korean traditional physical therapy has been developed and its scientific effects has been proven, It is required, to continue to carry out studying on this field.

  • Objective: This study is to investigate the effect of real-time feedback from the therapist on posture, muscle strength, pain of subjects with forward head posture based on a non-face-to-face complex exercise program. Design: Two-group pretest-posttest design. Methods: Thirty healthy men and women in their twenties with forward head posture with a Craniovertebral angle of 52° or less were targeted, the final selection was made as 15 experimental groups who performed the non-face-to-face intervention program while receiving real-time feedback and 15 control subjects who performed the non-face-to-face intervention program without providing feedback. Six of them were eliminated, and a total of 24 were conducted as subjects. All exercise groups performed an exercise program three times a week, 30 minutes each, for a total of two weeks. Before and after exercise, Craniovertebral angle (CVA), CranioRotation angle (CRA), muscle strength, and tenderness threshold were evaluated. Results: Significant differences were shown in both groups in CVA, and tenderness threshold before and after exercise (p<0.05), and CRA, the left middle trapezius muscle strength, only in the experimental group (p<0.05). In the comparison of theamount of change between exercise groups, the group that received feedback on CVA, CRA and tenderness threshold showed a significant change than the group without feedback (p<0.05). Conclusions: As a result of this study, it can be seen that the therapist's real-time feedback is more effective in improving the forward head posture. This requires feedback from the therapist on posture correction during non-face-to-face exercise intervention.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the correlations, if any, between SPPB (Short physical performance battery), FRT (Functional reach test), and TUG (Timed up and go test) in hospitalized frail people. Methods: Seventy frail elderly patients (male/female: 16/54) participated in this study. All subjects could walk with or without an assisting device and they had no mental problems. Subjects were scored on physical functioning using the SPPB, FRT, and TUG. The data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation Coefficients. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between (a) SPPB and (b) FRT (p<0.01) and TUG (p<0.01). SPPB and FRT scores showed a positive correlation (r = 0.38) and SPPB and TUG scores showed a negative correlation (r = -0.56). Conclusion: SPPB, FRT, TUG scores are correlated with each other. From these results, we conclude that the SPPB is a useful method for predicting walking, balance, and physical function in frail elderly people.

  • Recently, the problem of the elderly has become national and social issue throughout the world. And the ratio of elderly increase is expected to get accelerated more and more year after year. But the long-term care policy for the elderly in korea has not developed systematically yet. Therefore, in this study aims at searching the method for developing the long-term care policy of korea and the role of physical therapist for long-term care.

  • This review highlights the ontogenesis and the differentiation of motor neuron in spinal cord, and introduce the survival motor neuron(SMN) which is associated with growth and survival of motor neurons. The differentiation of floor plate cells and motor neurons in the vertebrate neural tube appears to be induced by signals from the notochord. This signal is Sonic hedgehog(Shh). The early development of motor neurons involves the inductive action of Shh. The SMN gene is essential for embryonic viability. SMN mRNA is also expressed in virtually all cell types in spinal cord, including large motor neurons. The SMN protein is involved in RNA processing and during early embryonic development is necessary fer cell survival. Two SMN genes are present in 5q 13 in humans: the telomeric gene(SMNt), which is the SMA-determining gene, and the centromeric analog gene(SMNc). The majority of transcripts from the SMNt gene are full length but, major transcripts of the SMNc gene have a high degrees of alternative splicing and tend to have little or no exon 7. The SMN is involved in the RNA processing(the biogenesis of snRNPs and pre-mRNA splicing), the anti-apoptotic effects, and regulating gene expression.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to figure out how PAP (Post-Activation Potentiation) phenomenon affects short-term performance efficiently. Methods: This study was conducted with 18 Taekwondo athletes and 16 healthy adults. By using isokinetic dynamometer, two different intervention, TDP (Top-down program) and BUP (Bottom-up program), were performed to measure isokinetic parameter; (peak torque: PT, total work: TW, average power: AP, and average torque: AT) of knee extensor for intragroup, intergroup comparison and two-way ANOVA. Results: The Taekwondo athletes group showed statistically significant differences in all isokinetic parameters PT, TW, AP, and AT after TDP (p<0.05). However, in the healthy adult group, the difference in isokinetic parameters according to the exercise sequence was not statistically significant. (p>0.05). PT and TW at TDP were statistically significant (p<0.05) when the rate of change in TDP and BUP was compared and analyzed considering the difference in physical ability between the Taekwondo athlete group and the healthy adult group. However, AP and AT were not statistically significant. Finally, when examining the interaction between the two groups and two exercise sequence according to isokinetic parameters, only TW (p<0.05) showed a statistically significant interaction, while PT (P=0.099), AP (P=0.103), and AT (P=0.096) did not. This study suggests that short-term performance can be improved through the PAP phenomenon when TDP is applied to the Taekwondo group. Conclusion: According to our result, for Taekwondo athletes, if the goal is to improve short-term performance just before the main game, we suggest a training program through TDP.

  • Denervated skeletal muscle produces muscle atrophy as well as changes at the neuromuscular junction which leads to terminal axonal sprouting and an ultrastructural remodeling. NT-3 is expressed in adult muscle and motoneurons. Normally NT-3 has a potential role in regulating adult neuromuscular jungtion and recovering following muscle atrophy. Also, it could influence synaptic neurotransmission between motoneurons and skeletal muscle cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of electrical stimulation therapy(EST) on NT-3 expression in neuromuscular junction following sciatic nerve transsection in rats. After EST application during 7 days, the immunoreactivity of NT-3 was increased in neuromuscular junction

  • Biomechanics is an important scientific foundation of physical therapy and is used to relate kinematics, kinetics, statics and dynamics for comprehencing human movement. The knee is well studied for demonstrating biomechanical analyses of joint because of its simplicity. The purposes of this study were 1)to provide categories and concepts of biomechanics, 2) to apply these concepts to knee movement involving daily living and gait, and 3) to review current and preceeding researches about biomechanics of knee. Thus, physical therapiestes in clinic may be helped understand of movement which includes considerations of description and production related force, moment and power.

  • Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder mainly caused by antibodies to the muscle acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction Loss of these receptors leads to a defect in neuromuscular transmission with muscle weakness and fatigue. In this study, to understand of myasthenia gravis, were viewed about anatomical and physiological view of neuromuscular junction.
