The soft ground in the southwest coastal area composed of marine clay is greatly influenced by sediment composition, particle size distribution, particle shape, adsorption ions and pore water characteristics, tide and temperature. In addition, the geotechnical properties are very complex due to stress history, change in pore water, dissolution process and gas formation. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of the soft ground were evaluated through field tests and laboratory tests to investigate the strength increase characteristics according to consolidation on the soft ground in the southwest coast. In addition, in order to understand the consolidation behavior of soft ground such as subsidence, pore water pressure, horizontal displacement of soil by embankment load, measuring instruments such as pore water pressuremeter, settlement gauge, inclinometer and differential settlement gauge was installed, and a piezocon penetration test was carried out step by step to confirm the increase in shear strength of the ground. Through this, it was confirmed that the shear strength of the ground is increased according to the stages of filling. In addition, by evaluating the properties of consolidation behavior, strength increase and consolidation prediction by empirical methods and theories were compared to analyze the characteristics of strength increase rate and consolidation behavior in consideration of regional characteristics.

Wood has different properties depending on the species or growth area. Therefore, in order to use wood efficiently, it is necessary to have a proper understanding of the characteristics of wood depending on the species and the appropriate use for them. In particular, in order to effectively use more than 1,000 species of woody plants in South Korea as wood, it is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of various Korean domestic woods and make a database of them. In this study, the anatomical properties (length and width of tracheid, cell wall thickness), physical properties (specific gravity and shrinkage), mechanical properties (bending strength, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, hardness), and chemical composition (ash, extract, lignin, total sugar content) of Korean red pine which was grown in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, South Korea were evaluated.
In this work, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) were used to modify asphalt, resulting in SBR- and SBS-modified asphalt, respectively. The two modified asphalts were emulsified with a nonionic emulsifier (Span 60) and cationic emulsifiers (ID, DDA) and their phase stabilization was investigated via particle size, Zeta potential, and flow behavior analysis. With increasing amount of the mixed emulsifier, the particle size decreased, leading to an increase in viscosity. The shear thinning behaviors and Zeta potential values ranging from 35-65 mV were determined and remained considerably stable. In addition, the adhesion strength and compression strength of the SBR-and SBS-modified asphalt emulsion were evaluated via surface free energy examination. The remarkable adhesion and compression strengths were estimated when 5 phr ID and 6 phr DDA were added to the emulsified asphalt modified with SBR and SBS. Therefore ID and DDA, the two cationic surfactants, played significant roles in improving the dispersion and interfacial adhesion strength, resulting in the improved adhesion and compression strength of the emulsified asphalts modified with SBR and SBS.
The factors affecting shear strength and friction characteristics of the fiber-mixed soil can be classified into engineering properties of soil; particle-size, distribution, and particle shape, physical and mechanical properties of fiber; shape, length, diameter, tensile strength, elastic modulus, friction coefficient, and mixed ratio and external factors; confined stress and compaction condition. In this study, a series of shear friction tests and pull-out tests were performed to evaluate the friction properties of fiber-mixed soil according to soil type, fiber type, fiber mixed ratio and compaction degree. The materials and test conditions used in this study are as follows. Soils: SM and ML; mixing fibers: three types of polypropylene fibers(net type 38mm and 60mm, and line type 60mm); reinforcement: geogrid; mixing ratio: 0.2% and 0.3%; degree of compaction : 85% and 95%.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe the microstructural changes of surface in the specimens, performing the shear bond strength testing. The currently most used non-precious alloys are nickel-chromium based alloys with or without beryllium. However, their biocompatibility has been questioned concerning possible damages to the health of the patient and professionals involved in the fabrication of prosthesis caused by long exposure to Ni and Be. An option to nickel-chromium alloys is the cobalt-chromium alloy, an alternative that does not sacrifice the physical properties of the metal porcelain systems. Studies in the animals substantially show that the cobalt-chromium alloys are relatively well tolerated, being therefore more biocompatible than the nickel-chromium alloys. Methods: Non-addition Be to nickel-chromium based alloy(Bellabond plus) and cobalt-chromium alloy which has been widely used(Wirobond C) fused with ZEO light porcelain classified control group and cobalt-chromium alloy which is developing alloy of Alphadent company in Korea(Alphadent alloy) fused with ZEO light porcelain classified experimental group. The specimens of $4mm{\times}4mm{\times}0.5mm$ were prepared as-cast and as-opaque to cast body to analyze the mechanical characteristic change, the microstructure of alloy surface. The phase change was used to observe through XRD analysis and OM/SEM was used to observe the surface of specimens as-cast and as-opaque to cast body. Chemical formation of their elements was measured with EDS. Then hardness was measured with Micro Vicker's hardness tester. Shear bond strength test thirty specimens of $10mm{\times}10mm{\times}2mm$ was prepared, veneered, 3mm high and 3mm in diameter, over the alloy specimens. The shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine(UTM) with a cross head speed of 0.5mm/min. Ultimate shear bond strength data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and the Scheffe's test (P<0.05). Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: The X-ray diffraction analysis results for the as-cast and as-opaque specimens showed that the major relative intensity of Bellabond plus alloy were changed smaller than Wirobond C and Alphadent Co-Cr based alloys. Results: Microstructural analysis results for the opaque specimens showed all the alloys increased carbides and precipitation(PPT). Alphadent Co-Cr based alloy showed the carbides of lamellar type. The Vickers hardness results for the opaque specimens showed Wirobond C and Alphadent Co-Cr based alloys were increaser than before ascast, but Bellabond plus alloy relatively decreased. The mean shear bond strengths (MPa) were: 33.11 for Wirobond C/ZEO light; 25.00 for Alphadent Co-Cr alloy/ZEO light; 18.02 for Bellabond plus/ZEO light. Conclusion: The mean shear bond strengths for Co-Cr and Ni-Cr based alloy were significantly different. But the all groups showed metal-metal oxide modes in shear bond strengths test at the interface.

The objective of this study is aimed at developing a new class of polymer concrete, in which hydration of cement and curing of a thermosetting resin can take place simultaneously during the mixing of concrete components. For the selected mix-proportion of the new polymer, the physical and mechanical properties needed for designs are presented. These important properties are compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength, direct strength, fatigue characteristics and fracture parameters. The observed properties are always compared with conventional concrete to serve as reference for engineer in deciding or selecting the proper materials for their projects, and shore protecting structure.

Physical and acoustic properties of sediment core samples recovered from the Kwangyang Bay, the Yeosu Sound, and the inner shelf of central South Sea, Korea were investigated. Compressional wave velocity, density, porosity, and shear strength were measured at 10cm interval's along the core depth. Sediment texture(grain size, sand, silt, and clay contents) were also measured and correlated with the physical properties(density, porosity, and shear strength). The physical and acoustic properties of the sediment changed gradually from the Kwangyang Bay to the shelf area in accordance with the distance from the input source of the terrigenous sediment. The Yeosu Sound acted as a route of sediment transport from the estuary(the Seomjin River) to the shelf and vice versa. The physical and acoustic properties of the Yeosu Sound sediment conformed to an intermediate stage between river mouth and shelf areas. These results can be utilized to trace the influence of the Seomjin River on the so-called mud belt of Korea.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical properties of experimental composite resins made with the spherical and crushed fillers. The 14 experimental composite resins containing 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25%(w/w) in spherical filler group and 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70%(w/w) in crushed filler group, incorporated in a Bis-GMA matrix (Aldrich Co., USA), were made with 1% ${\gamma}$-methoxy silane treated fillers. The polymer matrix was made by dissolving 0.7%(w/w) of benzoyl peroxide(Janssen Chemical Co. Japan) in methacrylate monomer, whereupon 0.7%(v/v) N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine(Tokyo Kasei Co. Japan) was added to the monomer. The weight percentage of each specific particle size distribution could be determined from a knowledge of the specific gravity, the weight(w/w), and corresponding volume %(v/v) of the filler sample in resin monomer. In crushed silica group and spherical silica group, the diametral tensile strengths and compressive strengths were measured with Instron Testing Machine(No.4467), and analyzed in 14 experimental composite resins made by filler fractions. The shear bond strength of 14 experimental composite resins to bovine enamel was measured with universal testing machine(Instron No.4467). The fracture surfaces were sputter-coated with a gold film and investigated by SEM. The results were as follows; 1. The diametral tensile strength was tendency to increase in crushed silica group, but not in spherical silica group. The highest diametral tensile strength was found in 20% filler fractions of two groups. 2. The compressive strength was higher in 15%(w/w) and 20%(w/w) in spherical silica group than in crushed silica group, but not in spherical silica group. 3. The significant correlation was noticed in increase in shear bond strength in crushed silica group, but not in spherical silica group. 4. The significantly highest shear bond strength was noticed in 50% filler concentration in crushed silica group, and in 15% filler concentration in spherical silica group, it was not significant in relation. 5. In crushed silica group, cut surface of resin matrix and the interface between resin and filler is obvious. In spherical silica group, fractures that occurred through the filler particles were round in shape.

This study was conducted to find out the physical properties and soil shearing strength reinforcement effect of herbaceous plants for the slope revegetation works. Two native plants(Pennisetum alopecuroides and Miscanthus sinensis) were used for this experiment, because they have excellent seed germination rates without preconditioning, and grow naturally around rivers. To identify the physical properties, the partial dry weight of plants were investigated. To identify the soil shearing strength reinforcement effect, the respective soil shearing strengths of the control soils, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Miscanthus sinensis samples were measured. Also, we did a correlation analysis to examine the relation of shearing strength to plant features. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The average dry weight of Pennisetum alopecuroides samples consists of 52.36% above ground and 47.64% at root. And in dry weight, 78.24% of it's root distributes within 10 cm in soil depth. Meanwhile the average dry weight of Miscanthus sinensis samples consists of 52.91% above ground and 47.09% at root. And in dry weight, 82.95% of it's root distributes within 10 cm in soil depth. 2. The results of correlation analysis showed that for both Pennisetum alopecuroides and Miscanthus sinensis, it could not be said that there was any correlation between shearing strength and plant characteristics, and statistically they were not meaningful. 3. In the shearing strength test with control soils, Pennisetum alopecuroides, Miscanthus sinensis as subjects, the differences in shearing strength measurement results were modest, and the order was shown as control soils < Pennisetum alopecuroides < Miscanthus sinensis, so the soil shearing strength reinforcement effect by the Pennisetum alopecuroides and the Miscanthus sinensis on loamy sand at river banks surface was confirmed.
Carbon fiber sheet(CFS) has been widely used for strengthening of the concrete building structures due to its excellent physical properties such as high strength, light weight and high durability. Bond strength or behavior, on the other hands, between carbon fiber sheet and concrete is very important in strengthening the concrete member using CFS. Therefore the bond failure mechanism between CFS and concrete should be fully verified and understood. This study is to investigate the bond strength of CFS to the concrete by the direct pull-out test and the tensile-shear test. In the direct pull-out tests, the bond strength under the various environmental conditions such as curing temperature, surface condition on concrete and water content of concrete are evaluated. Also, the effective bond length, lu and the average bond stress, $\tau$y are examined in the tensile-shear tests. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the curing temperature is the most critical element for the bond strength between CFS and concrete. And, the proper value of lu and $\tau$y is recommended with 15 cm and 9.78∼ 11.88 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively.
