  • This is a case report about rape poisoning in a Hanwoo. Non-protein nitrogen (NPN) compound in rape may cause poisoning in domestic animals. Rape poisoned cattle may show big and rapid breath with opening its mouth, edema and erosion of skin with itching, drooling, dyspnea and indigestion. Besides there can be shown neurological (blindness) and urological (red water) symptoms in some cases. There is no effective therapy for rape poisoning, therefore stopping the rape supplying is basically important. Clinical symptoms and history taking are very important factors in diagnosis of rape poisoning, due to the absence of diagnostic standard of judgment for rape poisoning. A Hanwoo 38 months old cow, in a farm located in Gyeoungbuk province showed typical rape poisoning symptoms such as breath with opening its mouth, drooling, dyspnea and hyperphotosensitivity, and dramatical recovery were occurred after stopping supplying of rape. The cow were diagnosed as the rape poisoning based on observation of clinical symptoms and history taking.

  • The nitrogen-laser flash photolysis apparatus has been set up to detect directly the transient produced from the excited Benoxaprofen (BXP). The function of the instrument has been tested by using anthracene as a standard sample. The laser photoexcitation of BXP in ethanol has been carried out under a constant stream of $N_2$ gas and a transient absorption spectrurn has been recorded over the 400-600 nm. The effects of oxygen and ${\beta}-carotene$ on the transient spectrum reveal that thee maximum transient absorption at 415 nm is attributed to the triplet state of BXP and the triplet energy of BXP is above 22 Kcal/mole. In addition to the triplet state, another transient species has been observed to be produced, which is probably a radical form of BXP. The photosensitization mechanism of BXP is discussed based on these results.

  • The electrochemical spectral sensitization of a $SnO_2$ electrode with eosin B, a Xanthene dye, has been studied in acetonitrile. Measurements of the photocurrent have been carried out in the presence of supersensitizers such as thiourea, 1-allyl-2-thiourea, NaSCN, and NaI. The magnitude of the supersensitized photocurrent was greater than that of the sensitized photocurrent for all of the supersensitizers studied. However, the long time span of irradiation causes a significant decrease of the supersensitized photocurrent as well as the absorbance. These results, together with infrared spectra and fluorescence spectra, are taken into account to elucidate the mechanism of photoreaction between eosin B and supersensitizers in acetonitrile.

  • The near-infrared absorbing donor-acceptor chromophores have been investigated by varying the electron donating and accepting molecular moiety. A series of near-infrared absorbing chromophores were offered narrow and intense absorption band in a various organic solvents. The dyes synthesised were, however, strongly bathochromic shift which extended well into the near-infrared region. The functional uses of dyes are vast in number, and it is convenient to classify them in some way. In all cases, it is the $\Pi$-chromophore that plays a major role in the functional application. "Light absorption" is of course the most commonly used property of a dye chromophore, and it can be employed directly, e.g. in light filters and optical data recording, or it can be used to drive further functional processes, e.g. fluorescence, photochromism, photosensitization.

  • We have been studied photosensitization mechanism's additive effect, of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl-diimide and X-phthalocyanine (charge generation materials), using the photochemical and photoelectrochemical approach. It was found that the photoreceptor on the excited state reacts with metal oxide, which creates the charge transfer on the interface of SnO2/electrolyte. In the electrode (X5P1) made of five X-phthalocyanine and single perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide layers, the cathodic photocurrent of X-phthalocyanine in the 400-600 nm region was increased by the addition of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide. The maximum wavelength of fluorescence of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide showed no dependence on the temperature. The addition of 4-dibenzylamino-2-methylbenzaldehyde diphenylhydrazone known as charge transport material was represented as decreasing photocurrent for X-phthalocyanine and perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide, respectively. In the electrode (X1P1) made of single X-phthalocyanine and single perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide layers, an anodic photocurrent of about 10.5 nA was generated by addition of hydroquinone at 550 nm. And the characteristic of photoinduced discharge was shown to decrease by a factor of 5 and the speed of dark decay was increased by a factor of 1.2.

  • The antioxidant capacity of aloe vera gel (AG), aloe vera exudates (AE), and a low molecular filtrate of aloe vera gel (ALMF) prepared from aloe vera grown on Jeju Island, Korea was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays, and total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) were determined. The phenolic compounds in aloe samples were analyzed. Antioxidant capacities in oil-in-water emulsions following riboflavin photosensitization were analyzed using lipid hydroperoxide. AE had significantly higher antioxidant capacity than that of the other samples based on the DPPH, ABTS, and ORAC assays (p<0.05). Lipid hydroperoxide values of 5 mg/mL for AG, AE, and ALMF were 521.78, 272.32, and 699.89 mmol/kg oil, respectively, whereas that of samples without aloe vera was 893.07 mmol/kg oil over 48 h. AE had higher TPC and TFC values. Aloesin and aloin were found in AE, whereas those compounds were only found in trace amounts in AG and ALMF.

  • The phthalocyanine(Pc) film can not be prepared by LB method because it is insoluble in organic solvents. In order to increase its solubility, two kinds of copper phthalocyanine derivatives (CuPc$(COOH)_2$ and CuPc$(COOH)_4$) were synthesized and their monolayers were prepared by LB method. It is found from the surface pressure-area curves that the LB monolayer film of CuPc$(COOH)_2$ have more ordered structure than that of CuPc$(COOH)_4$. In the photocurrent characteristic the value Of CuPc$(COOH)_2$ was superior to that of CuPc $(COOH)_4$. Therefore, it is found that the charge generation efficiency for phthalocyanines have influenced on its ordered structure as the functional groups.

  • The mechanism of photosensitization and the affect of binder on dye-sensitized ZnO have been studied by surface photovoltage spectroscopy. It has been found that the value of energy trapping level $E_{t1}$ on ZnO is 1.12eV (${\lambda$ = 1,100nm) and that of energy trapping level $E_{t2}$ on dye-sensitized ZnO is 0.99eV (${\lambda$ = 1,250nm) which is shifted towards a longer wavelength. The effect of binder on ZnO has been increased the efficiency of surface photovoltage, but it does not effect the values of energy trapping level. The acid-type dyes agree well with the prediction based on an electron transfer mechanism. The desensitization of the Na salt-type dyes for the intrinsic photoresponse of zinc oxide can be explained by energy transfer mechanism. It has been obtained that the dye-sensitized ZnO indicates the possibility of electrophotographic photosensitizer for the infrared range of light.

  • Photosensitizing activities of some selected photosensitizers (PS) on the artificial diminution of pesticide residues on red pepper were investigated. Red peppers were sprayed 4 times with the three fungicides, dithianon, triflumizole, and triforine, according to the conventional method, followed by the application of photosensitizers once. Recoveries for the analyses of the pesticide residues were high $(90.7{\sim}98.5%)$ except for dithianon $(76.6{\sim}78.3%)$. In case of dithianon, after 1 day of the application of PS-1 (10 ppm), the residual amount was 76% of that of the control. For triflumizole, the residual amount after 3 days of the application of PS-4 (50 ppm) accounted for 48% of that of the control. In case of triforine, the residual amount after 1 day of the application of PS-3 (100 ppm) was 55% of that of the control. The results indicated that the photosensitizing activities of photosensitizers varied with chemicals and the matrices where pesticide residues are remaining.

  • Quantum dots (QDs) have received considerable attention due to their potential role in photosensitization during photodynamic therapy. Although QDS are attractive nanomaterials due to their novel and unique physicochemical properties, concerns about their toxicity remain. We suggest a combination strategy, CdSe/ZnS QDs together with curcumin, a natural yellow pigment from turmeric, to reduce QD-induced cytotoxicity. The aim of this study was to explore a potentially effective cancer treatment: co-exposure of HL-60 cells and human normal lymphocytes to CdSe/ZnS QDs and curcumin. Cell viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and DNA damage induced by QDs and/or curcumin with or without ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation were evaluated in both HL-60 cells and normal lymphocytes. In HL-60 cells, cell death, apoptosis, ROS generation, and single/double DNA strand breaks induced by QDs were enhanced by treatment with curcumin and UVA irradiation. The protective effects of curcumin on cell viability, apoptosis, and ROS generation were observed in normal lymphocytes, but not leukemia cells. These results demonstrated that treatment with QD combined with curcumin increased cell death in HL-60 cells, which was mediated by ROS generation. However, curcumin acted as an antioxidant in cultured human normal lymphocytes.
