  • We have studied magnetic and structural properties of ultrathin Ni films grown on PI(lII) surface using in situ surface magneto-optic Kerr effect and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was absent, and longitudinal Kerr signal was only detectable for Ni films thicker than 6 monolayers. Enhancement in longitudinal Kerr signal by 30% was achieved by post-annealing at temperatures below 800K, but upon annealing at 820K, surface alloy was formed. By using core-level binding-energy shifts, the composition was determined to be Ni 70 at. %.

  • By using high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we show that inelastic scattering of photoelectron at low temperature (30K~50K) generates two kinds of oxygen species on Pt (111) surface. Intense synchrotron radiation source dissociates oxygen molecules into chemisorbed atomic oxygen and induces the formation of PtO on surface. Estimated coverage of dissociated atomic oxygen is 0.5 ML, suggesting possible formation of p($2{\times}1$) surface structure, while PtO coverage shows saturation coverage of 0.5 ML. Molecular oxygen dosed at 30 K undergoes thermally activated transition from physisorbed to chemisorbed state at around 40K.

  • X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) is used to characterize the crystallographically cleaved GaAs(110) surface. By using polar and azimuthal scans of the usual angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we get the reconstruction geometry of the clean GaAs(110) surface from the intensity ratio of Ga 3d core-level peaks. The reconstruction parameters are determined by fitting the diffraction pattern with the single scattering cluster (SSC) model, and the results show similar tendencies to those obtained by other techniques.

  • Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses have been performed on double-structured Au/V and Au/Ti thin films after heat treatment at 500$^{\circ}$C in air. V- and Tiunderlays sandwiched between gold thin films and SiOz substrates form oxides on the free surface of gold films during the heat treatment. The chemical compositions of the oxides were identified as V205 and TiOz in Au/V and Au/Ti thin films, respectively.

  • An electron energy analyzer for Angle Resolved Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARUPS) has been constructed and tested. This analyzer consists of tandem 3 element electron lenses and two concentric hemispherical capacitors. Electronic structure of clean Cu(100) surface has been studied to test the feature of the analyzer. The ultimate energy resolution is 40 me V and angle resolution is $0.2^{\circ}$.

  • Polymer memory devices have attracted considerable attention because of their advantages such as low cost potential, good scalability, flexibility, simplicity in structure, and large capacity for data storage. Metal/poly (4,4'-aminotriphenylene hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalimide) (6F-TPA PI)/metal system has been found to show an electrical bi-stable behavior. Here, we show a novel set-up of 6F-TPA PI/Al sample in which holes are injected by photoelectron emission process instead of direct charge carrier injection via metal electrode. In this process, an irreversible electrical phase transition of 6F-TPA PI is found, leading to a write-once-read-many (WORM) behavior. The photoelectron spectroscopy results measured before and after the switching process revealed that the irreversible electrical phase transition of 6F-TPA PI is attributed to the chemical modification of the carbonyl group in phthalimide moiety.

  • Surface science is intrinsically related to the performance of solar cells. In solar cells the generation and collection of charge carriers determines their efficiency. Effective transport of charge carriers across interfaces and minimization of their recombination at surfaces and interfaces is of utmost importance. Thus, the chemistry at the surfaces and interfaces of these devices must be determined, and related to their performance. In this talk we will discuss the role of two important interfaces, First, the role of surface passivation is very important in limiting the rate of carrier of recombination. Here we will combine x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the surface of a Si device with electrical measurements to ascertain what factors determine the quality of a solar cell passivation. In addition, the quality of the heterojunction interface in a ZnSe/CdTe solar cell affects the output voltage of this device. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy gives some insight into the composition of the interface, while ultraviolet photoemission yields the relative energy of the two materials' valence bands at the junction, which controls the open circuit voltage of the solar cell. The relative energies of ZnSe and CdTe at the interface is directly affected by the material quality of the interface through processing.

  • Structural properties of rf sputtered boron nitride films were studied as a function of deposition parameters such as nitrogen pressure, substrate temperature and substrate bias using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Composition and information on chemical bonding of resultant films was determined by XPS. XPS core level spectra showed that ratio of boron to nitrogen varied from 3.11 to 1.45 with respect to partial nitrogen pressure. Curve fitting of XPS spectra revealed three kinds of bonding mechanism of boron in the films. XPS peak positions of both B 1s and N 1s shifted to higher energy with higher nitrogen pressure as well as increase in substrate bias voltage. AES was used to see possible contamination of films by carbon or oxygen as well.
