A photoalignment material of a PGMAcr, poly[3-(acryloyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate] using a photopolymerized the acrylate unit by photo-initiator and a PGMA4Ch, poly[3(4-chalconyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate] using a photodimerization by chalcone group were synthesized. Also, the liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities on the photopolymer layers were studied. A good LC alignment with UV exposure on the PGMAcr surface can be obtained. However, the LC alignment defects were observed on the PGMA4Ch surface. The LC aligning capabilities of the PGMAcr surface by photo-initiator were better than that of the PGMA4Ch surface by chalcone group as photosensitive moiety.
We have fabricated pentacene based organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) with formulated poly[4-vinylphenol] (PVP) gate dielectrics. The gate dielectrics is composed of PVP, poly[melamine-coformaldehyde] (PMF) and photo-initiator [1-phenyl-2-hydroxy-2-methylpropane-1-one, Darocur1173]. By adding small amount (1 %) of photo-initiator, the cross-linking temperature is lowered to $115^{\circ}C$, which is lower than general thermal curing reaction temperature of cross-linked PVP (> $180^{\circ}C$). The hysteresis and the leakage current of the OTFTs are also decreased by adding the PMF and the photoinitiator in PVP gate dielectrics.
In this study, HEMA, MMA, AA, and EGDMA were used as basic combinations for manufacturing hydrophilic lenses for ophthalmic applications. In addition, AIBN (thermal polymerization initiator), 2H2M (photo polymerization initiator), and 3-hydroxypyridine (additive) were used to manufacture hydrophilic ophthalmic lenses through thermal polymerization and photo polymerization before their physical properties were measured. The results showed that when ophthalmic lenses were prepared via thermal polymerization and photo polymerization using 3-hydroxypyridine as an additive, their optical and physical properties and surface structures were different in each case, but they all satisfied the physical properties required for ophthalmic lenses.
Optimum conditions for UV-radiated photopolymerization of unsaturated polyester that could be used as protecting layer of large diameter pipe were investigated in this paper. UV photopolymerization method was selected to solve the problems, arising when thermal polymerization by organic peroxide was used, such as the instability of peroxide initiator, the evolution of volatile organic compound, and thermal deformation of product. Two of the photo-initiators (Irgacure 819 and Darocure 1173) well known for its penetrating ability deep into the polymer layer were selected, and the optimum conditions for photopolymerization (1.5 phr initiator content, 1:1.2 initiator ratio, Ga lamp for UV source) were found from the thermal and mechanical test results of the resultant UP polymers. In addition, composite materials containing UP polymer and glass fiber were tested for hardness, impact strength, and flexural strength to find that the impact strength of composite significantly improved.
When irradiated with visible light in HPDLC, photoinitiator and coinitiator produce a radical for photopolymerization. According to the kinds of photoinitiator and coinitiator, quantity and rate of produced a radical is different. It is influence on photopolymerization rate relate on diffraction efficiency. Thus, this paper is about the effect of photoinitiator/coinitiator combinations in terms of diffraction efficiency and real-time first order diffraction efficiency.
One of the approaches to obtain functional polymer is polymerization of a monomer having two functional groups. Although polymerization of a monomer having two different types of functional group is general, the author has been interested in the polymerization of a monomer having two similar types of functional group. This work shows the preparation and selective polymerization of 4-methylene-2-styryl-1,3-dioxolane having two similar reactive double bonds via cationic polymerization at ambient temperature. Cationic ring-opening polymerization of 4-methylene-2-styryl-1,3-dioxolane using benzylsulfonium salt as a photo-initiator quantitatively afforded high molecular weight of poly(keto-ether).
The extent of UV-curing photo-polymerization reaction was monitored by near-IR spectroscopic method. Acrylates containing quaternary ammonium salts and Darocur 1173 were used as reactive monomer and a photo initiator, respectively. The extent of photo-polymerization reaction was obtained from the conversion ratio of acrylate double bond calculated from the intensities of measured bands at 1615 nm and at 2105 nm. Near-IR spectroscopic methods can be an useful tool for the monitoring of the progress of photo-polymerization.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of tertiary amine photo-accelerator on the dental properties of visible light-activated, polymeric, dental restorative composites (PDRC) through the measurement of mechanical and esthetic properties. The surface of barium silicate was hydrophobically treated to improve the interfacial behavior with the acrylic resin matrix. Camphorquinone was adopted as a photo-initiator with 0.5 wt% based on the resin matrix. It was discovered that the dental properties of PDRC were primarily dependent on the chemical structure rather than the added content of photo-accelerator.
Living nature of photoinduced cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) in the presence of various combinations of diphenyliodonium halide (DPIX), a photocationic initiator and zinc halide $(ZnX_2)$ in methylene chloride has been investigated. Attainment of $100\%$ conversion and a linear relationship between $\%$conversion and number average molar mass of the resulting polymer, strongly suggests the living nature of this system. Livingness of the polymerization system was observed irrespective to the type of halide anion of the initiator and zinc salts unless the reaction temperature is not higher than $-30^{\circ}C$. The rate of polymerization decreases in the order of iodide > bromide > chloride when halide salt of DPIX and $ZnX_2$ are used. It is postulated that the cationic initiation is started by the insertion of weakly basic monomer in to the activated C-X terminal of the monomer adduct which is a reaction product of monomer and HX, a photolytic product of DPIX, formed in situ during the photo-irradiation process. It was concluded that polymerization is initiated by the insertion of weakly basic monomer into activated C- X terminal of monomer adduct due to the pulling action of$ZnX_2$, which successively producing a new polarized C-X terminal for the propagation in cationic nature. This led us to a conclusion that the living nature of this cationic polymerization is ascribable to the polarized C-X growing terminal, which is stable enough to depress the processes of chain transfer or termination process.
Photoinitiated polymeric dental restorative nanocomposites (PDRNC) were designed to be useful for the variety of dental restoration. Hybrid-filler composed of barium silicate (avg. dia.:1 ${\mu}m$) and nano-sized silica (avg. dia: 40 and 7 nm) was adopted as a filler system. To improve the interfacial behavior with the resin matrix of bisphenol A glycerolate methacrylate/triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (60/40 wt%), the surface of the filler was hydrophobically treated with a silane coupling agent. A visible light system of camphorquinone photo-initiator and 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate photo-accelerator was utilized to activate the PDRNC. Esthetic properties of PDRNC was investigated by measuring the Hunter L, a, b values and it was discovered that PDRNC produced in this work showed excellent esthetic properties with an increase in 7 nm nanofiller content.
