  • Removal rates of $PO_4-P$ and TP in a free water surface wetland system were investigated. The system was established in 2008 on a floodplain in the middle reach of the Gwangju Stream flowing through Gwangju City. Its dimensions were 46 meters in length and 5 meters in width. Two year old Typha angustifloria L. growing in pots were planted on half of the area and Zizania latifolia Turcz on the other half in 2008. Stream water was funneled into the wetlands by gravity flow, and its effluent was discharged back into the stream. The influent volume was controlled by valves and water depth was adjusted by wires. Volume and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from January to December in 2010. Inflow into the system averaged approximately $710m^3/day$ and hydraulic residence time was about 1.5 hours. Average influent and effluent $PO_4-P$ concentration were 0.144 and 0.103mg/L, respectively, and $PO_4-P$ abatement amounted to 28.6%. Influent and effluent TP concentration averaged 0.333 and 0.262mg/L, respectively, and TP retention reached to 20.7%.$PO_4-P$ removal rate(%) during plant growing season(31.448) was significantly high(p<0.001) when compared with that during plant non-growing season(25.829). TP abatement rate(%) during plant growing season(27.230) was also significantly high(p<0.001) when compared with that of the non-growing season(14.856). Major phosphorous removals in the system resulted from adsorption of phosphorous in the litter-soil layers; sedimentation of particulate phosphorous and Ca, Al, Fe bounded phosphates; and absorption of phosphorous by emergent plants. The adsorption and sedimentation occurred throughout the year, however, the absorption took place during plant growing season. This resulted in higher removals of $PO_4-P$ and TP during plant growing season.

  • The phosphate fractions and their relationships with other soil characteristics in greenhouse soils located on the southwest region in Korea were studied to demonstrate the possibility of the application of phosphate solubilizing microorganisms. The average contents of organic matter of 4.0% and exchangeable K, Ca, Mg of 1.16, 3.4, and $1.2cmol\;kg^{-1}$ respectively were higher than the aiming level for improvement of low fertile soil. Especially, available $P_2O_5$ of $1,193mg\;kg^{-1}$ was far more than the aiming level. The distribution of greenhouse soils classified by their total P contents was 46.1% for the range of $1,000{\sim}2,000mg\;kg^{-1}$, 29.6% for $2,000{\sim}3,000mg\;kg^{-1}$, and 12.9% for $3,000{\sim}4,000mg\;kg^{-1}$. And the soils containing more than $1,000mg\;kg^{-1}$, available $P_2O_5$ occupied 63.0% of the examined soils. The main forms of inorganic phosphates in greenhouse soils were Ca-P and Fe-P. The P fractions compared to total P were significantly correlated to soil pH, while available P was not so. Available phosphate was significantly correlated with the contents of organic matter and nitrogen, which are closely related to soil microbial activity, at the probability level of less than 1%.

  • An effective extraction methods of a garlic were investigated in order to improve the functional properties of the extracts. The solid yield, electron donating ability (EDA), nitrite-scavenging effects (NSE), peroxide value (POV) and total thiosulfinates contents of garlic extracts were determined. In order to improve the functional properties of extracts prepared with several organic solvents and acids, concentration and pH adjustment of the selected solvent and addition of acids and salts to solvents were also examined. Among the solvents tested, the methanol and ethanol extracts were found to be the most effective on the base of functionality and solid yields. The highest EDA, NSE and thiosulfinate value were obtained with 50% ethanol. The pH control of solvent and addition of citric acid, NaCl and phosphates to 50% ethanol did not affect on the functionality of the extracts. Therefore the optimal solvent for the best functional properties of garlic extract was 50% ethanol.
