  • Four mortar mixes tested to evaluate the early-age compressive strength of magnesia-phosphate composite with phosphate type. Monopotassium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and diammonium phosphate used as phosphate. Test results show that the compressive strength of mortar used monopotassium phosphate as phosphate was highest, while compressive strength of mortars used dipotassium phosphate and diammonium phosphate as phosphate were not developed.

  • Batch type adsorption and desorption tests were performed with different types (Powder, Granule) of Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) saturated with phosphate. The adsorption isotherm was approximated as a modified Langmuir type equation. The maximum adsorption capacity was 55 mg-P/g-LDH for powder type LDH, and 46 mg-P/g-LDH for granule type LDH. The highest phosphate desorption (79.6%) was obtained with 20% NaOH solution, whereas the desorption degrees were 4.8, 22.2% and 46.7% in the solutions of acidic condition (pH 4), 30% NaCl, and 3% NaOH, respectively. It was suggested that the optimal condition for the phosphate desorption from LDH was 30% NaCl + 3~6% NaOH solutions. The desorption characteristics of LDH was little influenced by adsorbent type.

  • In galactose metabolic pathway : there are three inborn metabolic disorders galactokinase deficiency (galactosemia type II), galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase(GALT) daficiency (galactosemia type I ), uridine diphosphate galactose-4-epimerase deficiency (galactosemia typeIII). Among these disorders GALT deficiency is the most severe and common. Infants with GALT deficiency fail to metabolize galactose-1-phosphate. As a consequence, galactose-1-phosphate and galactose are accumulated in blood in which GALS enzyme plays the role of a pathognomonic marker. (omitted)

  • Phosphate, a favorable phosphorous form for plant, is one of major nutrient elements for growth and development in plants. Plants exhibit various physiological and biochemical responses in reaction to phosphate starvation in order to maintain phosphate homeostasis. Of them, expression of high affinity phosphate transporter gene family and efficient uptake of phosphate via them is a major physiological process for adaption to phosphate deficient environment. Although the various genetic resources of high affinity phosphate transporter are identified recently, little is known about their functions in plant that is prerequisite information before applying to crop plants to generate valuable transgenic plants. We demonstrated that Arabidopsis transgenic plants over-expressing two different high affinity phosphate transporter gens, OsPT1 and OsPT7, derived from rice, exhibit better growth responses compared with wild-type under phosphate starvation condition. Specially, OsPT7 gene has proven to be more effective to generate Arabidopsis transgenic plant tolerant to phosphate deficiency than OsPT1. Furthermore, the expression level of AtPT1 gene that is one of reporter genes specifically induced by phosphate starvation was significantly low compared with wild-type during phosphate starvation. Taken together, these results collectively suggest that over expression of OsPTl and OsPT7 genes derived from monocotyledonous plant function efficiently in the dicotyledonous plant, relieving stress response caused by phosphate starvation and leading to better growth rate.

  • Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (1,000 bacteria and 200 fungi) were isolated from soil around Kyungnam and Kyungbook regions using potato dextrose agar-calcium phosphate medium. A fungus with the greatest phosphate solubilizing activity was selected and identified to Penicillium sp. GL-101, based on the morphological characteristics of conidiophore and conidia; flask shape of phialide, simple branching type of conidiophore, and columnar shape of conidial head, in malt extract agar and potato dextrose agar media. The optimum temperature and initial pH to solubilize rock phosphate in potato dextrose broth-rock phosphate medium were $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.5, respectively. In these optimum conditions, phosphate solubilizing activities of Penicillium sp. GL-101 against four types of insoluble phosphate: tricalcium-phosphate, aluminium phosphate, hydroxyapatite and rock phosphate, were quantitatively determined. As results, this fungus highly discharged free phosphates to the culture broth with the concentrations of 1,152 ppm against tricalcium-phosphate, 565 ppm against rock phosphate, 292 ppm against aluminium phosphate, and 217 ppm against hydroxyapatite, respectively.

  • This experimental shows the possibility of using as biofertilizer, which convert insoluble inorganic phosphate salts to plant-usable phosphate type by immobilized microorganism with calcium alginate. In the case of culture of P. agglomerans on constant medium pH, phosphate was produced 357 mg/L after 18hrs. And in the case of culture of immobilzed P. agglomerans bead, phosphate was produced maximum 295.6 mg/L after 120 hrs. Also as using rock phosphate as insoluble phosphate salts, phosphate was respectably produced 190.3 and 195.2 mg/L after 36 hrs at free cells and immobilized cells. In our experiments, the using soils contained 23.16 g-P/kg-soil total phosphate and 3.76 g-P/kg-soil soluble phosphate. The result of 1g immobilized bead seeding, soluble phosphate was produced maximum 6.14 g-P/kg-soil phosphate and this value was increased continuously.

  • To reduce effectively cadmium (Cd) phytoavailability by phosphate in mine tailing affected soil, fused and super phosphate (FSP), a main phosphate fertilizer in South Korea, was selected as phosphate source and then applied at the rates of 0, 78, 390, and 780 $P_2O_5kg\;ha^{-1}$. FSP did not decrease Cd extractability and radish Cd uptake, but increased significantly. The effect of Cd supplement and soil negativity increase through FSP application was not significant. Soil pH decreased markedly with increasing FSP application, which increased significantly soil Cd extractability and radish Cd uptake. As a result, phosphate fertilizer for reducing Cd phtyoavailability in heavy metals contaminated soil should be carefully selected as alkaline type.

  • In this study, a novel phosphorus removal filter made of brass scrubber with higher porosity of over 96% was fabricated and evaluated. The brass scrubber was surface-modified to form copper hydroxide on the surface of the brass, which could be a phosphate removal filter for advanced wastewater treatment because the phosphates could be removed by the ion exchange with hydroxyl ions of copper hydroxide. The evaluation of phosphate removal was performed under the conditions of the batch type in wastewater and continuous type through filters. Filter recycling was also evaluated with retreatment of the surface modification process. The phosphate was rapidly removed within a very shorter contact time by the surface-modified brass scrubber filter, and the phosphate mass of 1.57 mg was removed per gram of the filter. The possibility of this surface-modified brass scrubber filter for phosphorus removal was shown without undesirable sludge production of existing chemical phosphorus removal techniques, and we feel that it would be very meaningful as a new wastewater treatment.

  • Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for all living organisms. P is mostly obtained from mined rock phosphate. However, existing rock phosphate reserves could be exhausted in the next 50-100 years. As Korea is totally dependent on imported rock phosphate, we should seek for solution to overcome the P depletion by efficient use and recycling. For this, this study suggested a P flow model to identify the location and flow route of P in urban area based on traditional material flow analysis. The type of P entering the urban areas are fertilizer, food and feed. Each type of P is used in agriculture, human consumption and animal husbandry. After going through each process, P is moved to waste management facilities within food waste, excreta and sewage. Some portion of P in waste are buried, incinerated and discharged, which can be reservoir of P in the future.
