This paper proposes a spoken Korean processing model which is extensible to large vocabulary continuous spoken Korean system. The integration of phoneme level speech recognition with natural language processing can support a sophisticated phonological/morphological analysis. The model consists of a diphone speech recognizer, a viterbi dictionaly searcher and a morpheme connectivity information checker. Two-level hierarchical TDNNs recognize newly defined Korean diphones. The diphone sequences are segmented and converted to the most probable morpheme sequences by the Viterbi dictionary searcher. The morpheme sequency are then examined by the morpheme connectivity information checker and the correct morpheme sequence which has the greatest probability is collected. The experiments show that the morphological analysis for spoken Korean can be achieved for 328 Eojeols with 80.6% success rate.
The purpose of this paper is to explain stress shift and its following segmental variations when some suffixes are added to the bases. In the past those were analyzed in stress or vowel laxing phenomenon separately, but rather those should be analyzed in one framework compositively. Therefore in this paper I will introduce a new theory, which is known as Harmonic theory, and confirm that it can solve the problems related with stress and vowel laxing simultaneously. The first thing, as a prosodic approach I am going to analyze vowel laxing according to Liberman & Prince (1977), Burzio (1993), and then next to go to the Harmonic theory approach. Within the theory I will analyze the phonological phenomena harmoniously through the important three levels, M-level, W-level, P-level. Therefore this paper is to show that from the comparison between the prosodic analysis and the Harmonic analysis, what is more natural and harmonious analysis is based on the Harmonic approach.
This study intended on analyzing the error patterns of mathematic problem posing sentences by the 100 elementary pre-teachers and discussing about the solutions. The results showed that the problem posing sentences have five error patterns: phonological error patterns, word error patterns, sentence error patterns, meaning error patterns, and notation error patterns. Divided into fourteen specific error patterns, they are as in the following. 1) Phonological error patterns are consisted of the 'ㄹ' addition error pattern and the abbreviated word error pattern. 2) Words error patterns are divided with the inappropriate usage of word error pattern and the inadequate abbreviation error pattern, which are formulized four subgroups such as the case maker, ending of the word, inappropriate usage of word, and inadequate abbreviation of article or word error pattern in detail. 3) Sentence error patterns are assumed four kinds of forms: the reference, ellipsis of sentence component, word order, and incomplete sentence error pattern. 4) Meaning error patterns are composed the logical contradiction and the ambiguous meaning. 5) Notation error patterns are formed four patterns as the spacing, punctuation, orthography of Hangul, and spelling rules of foreign words in Korean. Furthermore, the solutions for these error patterns were discussed: First, it has to be perceived the differences between spoken and written language. Second, it has to be rejected the spoken expressions in written contexts. Third, it should be focused on the learning of the basic sentence patterns during the class. Forth, it is suggested that the word meaning should have the logical development perception based on what it means. Finally, it is proposed that the system of spelling of Korean has to be learned. In addition to these suggestions, a new understanding is necessary regarding writing education for college students.
This study aims to develop a three-sentence speech screening test to evaluate speech development in 4-year-old children and provide standards for comparison with peers. Screening tests were conducted on 24 children each in the first and second halves of 4 years old. The screening test results showed a correlation of .7 with the existing speech disorder evaluation test results. We compared whether there was a difference between the two groups of 4-year-old in the phonological development indicators and error patterns obtained through the screening test. The developmental indicators of the children in the second half were high, but there were no statistically significant differences. The Korean Speech Sound Analysis Tool (KSAT) was used for all analyses, and the automatic analysis results and contents of the clinician's manual analysis were compared. The degree of agreement between the automatic and manual error pattern analyses was 93.63%. The significance of this study is that the standard of speech of a 4-year-old child of the speech screening test according to three sentences at the level of elicited sentences, and the applicability of the KSAT were reviewed in both clinical and research fields.
The purpose of this study was to examine the working memory that is related with reading. For this purpose, the third and fourth grade children with reading difficulty were compared with normal children. The gender comparison and the correlations among the three components of working memory were also examined. The results indicated that the reading difficulty group were outperformed by the normal group in every test. Gender difference was found only in visuospatial capacity. There was an interaction between reading and gender in the memory of dynamic mazes. In the whole group, every correlation among all components was significant. When the correlations were examined separately in each group, however, only one correlation was significant in both groups. When the influence of the central executive was controlled, the interrelationship between phonological working memory and visuospatial working memory was mitigated. This study suggests that when teaching children with reading difficulty instructional material should be succinct and visuospatial information needs to be used for boys if possible.

Various phonological alteration occurs when we pronounce continuously in korean. This phonological alteration is one of the major reasons which make the speech recognition of korean difficult. This paper presents a rule-based system which converts a speech recognition character string to a text-based character string. The recovery results are morphologically analyzed and only a correct text string is generated. Recovery is executed according to four kinds of rules, i.e., a syllable boundary final-consonant initial-consonant recovery rule, a vowel-process recovery rule, a last syllable final-consonant recovery rule and a monosyllable process rule. We use a x-clustering information for an efficient recovery and use a postfix-syllable frequency information for restricting recovery candidates to enter morphological analyzer. Because this system is a rule-based system, it doesn't necessitate a large pronouncing dictionary or a phoneme dictionary and the advantage of this system is that we can use the being text based morphological analyzer.
The purpose of this paper is to show how the coda of a syllable and word-final clusters are represented in the English syllable structure. Previous theories on the syllable assume that there is only one segment in the coda position. And, as we know, the theories that license only one segment in the coda make it difficult to syllabicate the word-final cluster appropriately when more than two segments in the word-final cluster are encountered. I considered three approaches: the previous syllable structure (Selkirk, 1982; Borowsky 1989), sonority sequencing (Giegerich, 1992; Roca, 1999) and feature analysis (Goldsmith, 1990), But, all the considered methods don't give us a satisfactory explanation regarding word-final clusters. Finally, I will suggest a modified syllable representation as an alternative by placing two different appendixes under the Phonological Word which forms a constituent above the syllable node. From this it is possible to explain the former problematic word-final clusters including morphological information asan inflectional suffix in the structure.
This paper presents a method of building an exceptional pronunciation dictionary for Korean automatic pronunciation generator. An automatic pronunciation generator is an essential element of speech recognition system and a TTS (Text-To-Speech) system. It is composed of a part of regular rules and an exceptional pronunciation dictionary. The exceptional pronunciation dictionary is created by extracting the words which have exceptional pronunciations from text corpus based on the characteristics of the words of exceptional pronunciation through phonological research and text analysis. Thus, the method contributes to improve performance of Korean automatic pronunciation generator as well as the performance of speech recognition system and TTS system.

This study aimed to analyze spatio-temporal trends of phenological characteristics in South Korea by using MODIS EVI. For the phenology analysis, we had applied double logistic function to MODIS time-series data. Our results showed that starting date of phenology seems to have a tendency along with latitudinal trends. Starting date of phenology of Jeju Island and Mt. Sobeak went back for 0.38, 0.174 days per year, respectively whereas, Mt. Jiri and Mt. Seolak went forward for 0.32 days, 0.239 days and 0.119 days, respectively. Our results exhibited the fluctuation of plant phonological season rather than the change of phonological timing and season. Starting date of plant phenology by spatial distribution revealed tendency that starting date of mountain area was late, and basin and south foot of mountain was fast. In urban ares such as Seoul metropolitan, Masan, Changwon, Milyang, Daegu and Jeju, the phonological starting date went forward quickly. Pheonoligcal attributes such as starting date and leaf fall in urban areas likely being affected from heat island effect and related warming. Our study expressed that local and regional monitoring on phonological events and changes in Korea would be possible through MODIS data.
In this paper, we develop a speech recognition system using a throat microphone. The use of this kind of microphone minimizes the impact of environmental noise. However, because of the absence of high frequencies and the partially loss of formant frequencies, previous systems developed with those devices have shown a lower recognition rate than systems which use standard microphone signals. This problem has led to researchers using throat microphone signals as supplementary data sources supporting standard microphone signals. In this paper, we present a high performance ASR system which we developed using only a throat microphone by taking advantage of Korean Phonological Feature Theory and a detailed throat signal analysis. Analyzing the spectrum and the result of FFT of the throat microphone signal, we find that the conventional MFCC feature vector that uses a critical pass filter does not characterize the throat microphone signals well. We also describe the conditions of the feature extraction algorithm which make it best suited for throat microphone signal analysis. The conditions involve (1) a sensitive band-pass filter and (2) use of feature vector which is suitable for voice/non-voice classification. We experimentally show that the ZCPA algorithm designed to meet these conditions improves the recognizer's performance by approximately 16%. And we find that an additional noise-canceling algorithm such as RAST A results in 2% more performance improvement.
