In this paper, a phoneme classification method for Korean speech recognition has been proposed and its performance has been studied. The phoneme classification has been done based on the phonemic features extracted by the prewindowed recursive least-square (PRLS) algorithm that is a kind of adaptive filter algorithms. Applying the PRLS algorithm to input speech signal, precise detection of phoneme boundaries has been made, Reference patterns of Korean phonemes have been generated by the ordinery vector quantization (VQ) of feature vectors obtained manualy from prototype regions of each phoneme. In order to obtain the performance of the proposed phoneme classification method, the method has been tested using spoken names of seven Korean cities which have eleven different consonants and eight different vowels. In the speaker-dependent phoneme classification, the accuracy is about $85\%$ considering simple phonemic rules of Korean language, while the accuracy of the speaker-independent case is far less than that of the speaker-dependent case.
In this paper, we develop a real time lip-synch system that activates 2-D avatar's lip motion in synch with an incoming speech utterance. To realize the 'real time' operation of the system, we contain the processing time by invoking merge and split procedures performing coarse-to-fine phoneme classification. At each stage of phoneme classification, we apply the support vector machine (SVM) to reduce the computational load while retraining the desired accuracy. The coarse-to-fine phoneme classification is accomplished via two stages of feature extraction: first, each speech frame is acoustically analyzed for 3 classes of lip opening using Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) as a feature; secondly, each frame is further refined in classification for detailed lip shape using formant information. We implemented the system with 2-D lip animation that shows the effectiveness of the proposed two-stage procedure in accomplishing a real-time lip-synch task. It was observed that the method of using phoneme merging and SVM achieved about twice faster speed in recognition than the method employing the Hidden Markov Model (HMM). A typical latency time per a single frame observed for our method was in the order of 18.22 milliseconds while an HMM method applied under identical conditions resulted about 30.67 milliseconds.
In this paper, we studied on the phoneme classification for Korean speech recognition. In the case of making large vocabulary speech recognition system, it is better to use phoneme than syllable or word as recognition unit. And, In order to study the difference of speech recognition according to the number of phoneme as recognition unit, we used the speech toolkit of OGI in U.S.A as recognition system. The result showed that the performance of diphthong being unified was better than that of seperated diphthongs, and we required the better result when we used the biphone than when using mono-phone as recognition unit.
In order to construct a feature map-based phoneme classification system for speech recognition, two procedures are usually required. One is clustering and the other is labeling. In this paper, we present a phoneme classification system based on the Kohonen's Self-Organizing Feature Map (SOFM) for clusterer and labeler. It is known that the SOFM performs self-organizing process by which optimal local topographical mapping of the signal space and yields a reasonably high accuracy in recognition tasks. Consequently, SOFM can effectively be applied to the recognition of phonemes. Besides to improve the performance of the phoneme classification system, we propose the learning algorithm combined with the classical K-mans clustering algorithm in fine-tuning stage. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed phoneme classification algorithm, we first use totaly 43 phonemes which construct six intra-class feature maps for six different phoneme classes. From the speaker-dependent phoneme classification tests using these six feature maps, we obtain recognition rate of $87.2\%$ and confirm that the proposed algorithm is an efficient method for improvement of recognition performance and convergence speed.

For Korean phoneme recognition, Hidden Markov-Gaussian Mixture model(HMM-GMM) or hybrid models which combine artificial neural network with HMM have been mainly used. However, current approach has limitations in that such models require force-aligned corpus training data that is manually annotated by experts. Recently, researchers used neural network based phoneme recognition model which combines recurrent neural network(RNN)-based structure with connectionist temporal classification(CTC) algorithm to overcome the problem of obtaining manually annotated training data. Yet, in terms of implementation, these RNN-based models have another difficulty in that the amount of data gets larger as the structure gets more sophisticated. This problem of large data size is particularly problematic in the Korean language, which lacks refined corpora. In this study, we introduce CTC algorithm that does not require force-alignment to create a Korean phoneme recognition model. Specifically, the phoneme recognition model is based on convolutional neural network(CNN) which requires relatively small amount of data and can be trained faster when compared to RNN based models. We present the results from two different experiments and a resulting best performing phoneme recognition model which distinguishes 49 Korean phonemes. The best performing phoneme recognition model combines CNN with 3hop Bidirectional LSTM with the final Phoneme Error Rate(PER) at 3.26. The PER is a considerable improvement compared to existing Korean phoneme recognition models that report PER ranging from 10 to 12.
The teach pendant and keyboard have been used as an input device of control command in human-robot sustem. But, many problems occur in case that the usef is a novice. So, speech recognition system is required to communicate between a human and the robot. In this study, Korean voice commands, eitht robot commands, and ten digits based on the broad phonetic analysis are described. Applying broad phonetic analysis, phonemes of voice commands are divided into phoneme groups, such as plosive, fricative, affricative, nasal, and glide sound, having similar features. And then, the feature parameters and their ranges to detect phoneme groups are found by minimax method. Classification rules are consisted of combination of the feature parameters, such as zero corssing rate(ZCR), log engery(LE), up and down(UD), formant frequency, and their ranges. Voice commands were recognized by the classification rules. The recognition rate was over 90 percent in this experiment. Also, this experiment showed that the recognition rate about digits was better than that about robot commands.

In this paper, we propose a connected Korean digit recohnition system employing neural networks and lexical constraints of the Korean digits. In the proposed recognition system, firstly, each frame of digit string is labelled by phoneme classification neural networks.which are trained with the reference phoneme segments extracted form an isolated digit based on the position information. And, the frame labels are combined with each other for constructing the phoneme segments. Then, these segments are combined to form a digit candidate using the digit combination rules. The digit candidate is decided based on the condition for digit decision. If the condition is not satisfied, the digit candidate is further recognized using the digit decision neural network in the next step. In our approach, the neural networks are trained with 10 isolated digits uttered by 5 male speakers. To investigate the performance of the proposed recognition system, an intensive computer simulation on the 30 connected digit strings uttered by 5 male speakers is performed. The simulation result indicates that 95.6% digit recognition rate and 82% digit string recognition rate are provided by the proposed Korean digit recognition system.
This paper investigated the phoneme distribution and phonological processes of orthographic and pronounced phrasal words in light of syllable structure in the Seoul Corpus in order to provide linguists and phoneticians with a clearer understanding of the Korean language system. To achieve the goal, the phrasal words were extracted from the transcribed label scripts of the Seoul Corpus using Praat. Following this, the onsets, peaks, codas and syllable types of the phrasal words were analyzed using an R script. Results revealed that k0 was most frequently used as an onset in both orthographic and pronounced phrasal words. Also, aa was the most favored vowel in the Korean syllable peak with fewer phonological processes in its pronounced form. The total proportion of all diphthongs according to the frequency of the peaks in the orthographic phrasal words was 8.8%, which was almost double those found in the pronounced phrasal words. For the codas, nn accounted for 34.4% of the total pronounced phrasal words and was the varied form. From syllable type classification of the Corpus, CV appeared to be the most frequent type followed by CVC, V, and VC from the orthographic forms. Overall, the onsets were more prevalent in the pronunciation more than the codas. From the results, this paper concluded that an analysis of phoneme distribution and phonological processes in light of syllable structure can contribute greatly to the understanding of the phonology of spoken Korean.
