  • Between June and November 2002, the atmospheric concentrations and dry deposition fluxes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Chonju were measured four times each over five days. The total concentration of PAHs in ambient air was $84\;ng/m^3$, with about 90% existing in the vapor phase. Plots of log ($K_p$) vs. log (${P_L}^0$) indicated that PAHs partitioning was not in equilibrium and the particulate characteristics did not change with seasonal variations. The PAHs fluxes to a water surface sampler (WSS) and a dry deposition plate (DDP) were about 14.15 and $1.92\;{\mu}g/m^2/d$, respectively. The flux of the gaseous phase, acquired by subtracting the DDP from the WSS results, was about $12.23\;{\mu}g/m^2/d$. A considerable correlation was shown between the atmospheric concentrations and deposition fluxes in the gaseous phase, but not in the particulate phase, as the fluxes of the particulate phase were dependent on the physical velocity differences of the particulates based on the particle diameter.

  • We investigated the surface structure and wetting behavior of octaneselenolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) formed in a 50 ${\mu}M$ ethanol solution according to immersion time, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and an automatic contact angle (CA) goniometer. Closely-packed, well-ordered alkanethiol SAMs would form as the immersion time increased; unexpectedly, however, we observed the structural transition of octaneselenolate SAMs from a molecular row phase with a long-range order to a disordered phase with a high density of vacancy islands (VIs). Molecularly resolved STM imaging revealed that the missing-row ordered phase of the SAMs could be assigned as a $(6{\times}{\surd}3)R30^{\circ}$ superlattice containing three molecules in the rectangular unit cell. In addition, CA measurements showed that the structural order and defect density of VIs are closely related to the wetting behaviors of octaneselenolate SAMs on gold. In this study, we clearly demonstrate that interactions between the headgroups and gold surfaces play an important role in determining the physical properties and surface structure of SAMs.

  • Phase averaged velocity fields in the near wake region behind a square cylinder have been (successfully) obtained using randomly sampled PIV data sets. The Reynolds number based on the flow velocity and the vertex height was 3,900. To identify the phase information, we examined the magnitude of circulation and the center of peak vorticity. The center of vorticity was estimated from lowpass filtered vorticity contours (LES decomposition) adopting a sub-pixel searching algirithm. Due to the sinusoidal nature of firculation which is closely related to the instantaneous vorticity, the location of peak voticity fits well with a sine curve of the circulation magnitude. Conditionally-averaged velocity fields represent the barman vortex shedding phenomenon very well within 5 degrees phase uncertainty. The oscillating nature of the separated shear layer and the separation bubble at the top surface are clearly observed. With the hot-wire measurements of Strouhal frequency, we found thats the convection velocity changes its magnitude very rapidly from 25 to 75 percent of the free stream velocity along the streamwise direction when the flow passes by the recirculation region.

  • Phase separation is the typical phenomenon in protein-polysaccharide mixtures because of thermodynamic incompatibility between two macromolecules. Phase separations of casein-alginate-water systems were investigated by using phase diagram under varying pH (6, 8 and 10) and NaCl concentrations (0, 0.25 and 0.5 M). Incompatibility decreased with increasing pH and decreasing NaCl concentration. Molecular weight of alginates did not significantly affect the phase diagram of casein-alginate-water systems. The results strongly suggested that compatibility of casein and alginate involved electrostatic interactions.

  • Purpose: This study examined the difference in the center of pressure (COP) displacement time in older adults according to the obstacle height during stance at each sub.phase when crossing obstacles. Methods: Fifteen older adults were enrolled in this study (${\geq}65$ years of age). The F-scan was used to measure the COP displacement time when crossing a 0, 10 and 40cm obstacle, and the stance phase was divided into 4 sub-phases according to the foot contact pattern. Results: During the stance phase, the COP displacement time increased with increasing obstacle height. During the mid-stance, terminal stance and pre-swing except for the loading response, there were significant differences in the COP displacement time according to the obstacle height. Conclusion: This study suggests that older adults show differences in the COP displacement time according to the stance sub-phase while crossing obstacles, and they use different mechanisms according the sub-phases to maintain balance during obstacle crossing.

  • This investigation was focused on the low temperature tensile properties, phase change, changes in nitrogen content and corrosion resistance in the 22Cr-5Ni-3Mo duplex stainless steel after high temperature gas nitriding and solution annealing (HTGN-SA). From the HTGN-SA treatment, the duplex (ferrite + austenite) phase changed into austenite single phase. The nitrogen content of austenite single-phase steel showed a value of ~0.54%. For the HTGN-SA treated austenitic steel, tensile strength increased with lowering test temperature, on the other hand elongation showed the maximum value of 28.2% at $-100^{\circ}C$. The strain-induced martensitic transformation gave rise to lead the maximum elongation. After HTGN-SA treatment, corrosion resistance of the austenite single-phase steel increased remarkably compared with HTGN- treated steel.

  • The chromatographic behaviors of nucleotides (inosine 5'-monophosphate, uridine 5'-monophosphate, guanosine 5'-monophosphate, and thymine monophosphate disodium salts) on a C18 column were studied with different types of ionic liquids (ILs) as additives for the mobile phase in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC). Three ILs, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIm][BF4]), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIm][BF4]), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methylsulfate ([EMIm][MS]), were used. Eluents were composed of water and methanol (90/10%, vol) with the addition of 0.5-13.0 mM of ILs. The effects of the concentration of ILs on retention and separation were investigated and discussed. The results showed that the addition of ILs affects the retention and resolution of the tested compounds. Use of 13.0 mM of [BMIm][BF4] as the eluent modifier resulted in a baseline separation of nucleotides without requiring gradient elution. This study demonstrates that ILs can be potentially applied as a mobile phase modifier in RPLC.

  • The purpose of this case study was to introduce functional electrical stimulation(FES) for paraplegic patients. FES provides the ability to rise from sitting to standing, maintenance of a standing position, and the ability to walk with a reciprocal gait. Six channels of electrical stimulation are sufficient for synthesis of a simple reciprocal gait pattern in these patients. During the double-stance phase, knee extensor muscles of both knees are stimulated, providing sufficient support for the body. Only one knee extensor muscle group is excited during the single-stance phase. The swing phase of the contralateral lower extremity is accomplished by eliciting the synergic flexor muscle response through electrical stimulation of afferent nerves. The transition from the double-stance phase to the swing phase is controlled by two hand switches used by the therapist or built into the handles of the walking frame for using by the patient. A twenty-five years old male was with a T9/T9 spinal cord injury due to a traffic accident and admitted to Yonsei Rehabilitation Hospital for comprehensive treatment. After 30 days of training using the Parastep(R) he was able to stand for 10 minutes. After 43 days, he was able to walk and at discharged he could walk for 100 meters.

  • Langasite ($La_{3}Ga_{5}SiO_{14}$) was found to have wide application as a promising piezoelectric material. It has high thermal stability of the frequency and large electromechanical coupling factor. For the further development of new compounds with langasite type structure, powders in the La-Al-Si-O system were synthesized by a modified Pechini process. The evolution of the crystalline phase during calcination was studied using TG-DTA, XRD and TEM for the precursor powders. Decomposition proceeded via dehydration and removal of excess solvents at low temperatures ($T<500^{\circ}C$), followed by the crystallization of lanthanum aluminum silicate ($T>800^{\circ}C$) and phase transformation to $LaAlO_{3}$ phase ($T>1200^{\circ}C$). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the calcined powders showed diffuse hollow rings corresponding to an amorphous phase at $800^{\circ}C$ and clear diffraction patterns corresponding to a crystalline phase from the P321 space group ($T<1200^{\circ}C$) and the R3m ($T<1200^{\circ}C$).

  • The life cycle of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) typically follows a seasonal march, with onset in spring, developing during summer, maturing in boreal winter, and decaying over the following spring. This feature is referred to as ENSO phase locking. Recent studies have noted that seasonal modulation of the ENSO growth rate is essential for this process. This study investigates the fundamental effect of a seasonally varying growth rate on ENSO phase locking using a modified seasonally dependent recharge oscillator model. There are two phase locking regimes associated with the strength of the seasonal modulation of growth rate: 1) a weak regime in which only a single peak occurs and 2) a strong regime in which two types of events occur either with a single peak or with a double peak. Notably, there is a seasonal gap in the strong regime, during which the ENSO peak cannot occur because of large-scale ocean-atmosphere coupled processes. We also retrieve a simple analytical solution of the seasonal variance of ENSO, revealing that the variance is governed by the time integral of seasonally varying growth rate. Based on this formulation, we propose a seasonal energy index (SEI) that explains the seasonal gap and provides an intuitive explanation for ENSO phase locking, potentially applicable to global climate model ENSO diagnostics.
