  • When faults occur in transmission lines, the classification of faults is very important. If the fault is HIF(High Impedance Fault), it cannot be detected or removed by conventional overcurrent relays (OCRs), and results in fire hazards and causes damages in electrical equipment or personal threat. The fast discrimination of fault needs to effective protection and treatment and is important problem for power system protection. This paper propolsed the fault detection and discrimination algorithm for LIFs(Low Impedance Faults) and HIFs(High Impedance Faults). This algorithm uses artificial neural networks and variation of 3-phase maximum currents per period while faults. A double lines-to-ground and line-to-line faults can be detected using Neural Network. Also, the other faults can be detected using the value of variation of maximum current. Test results show that the proposed algorithms discriminate LIFs and HIFs accurately within a half cycle.

  • High impedance fault(HIF) is defined as a fault that the general overcurrent relay can not detect or interrupt. Especially when HIF occurs in residential areas, energized high voltage conductor results in fire hazard, equipment damage or personal threat. This paper proposes a fault location estimation algorithm for high impedance fault using wavelet transform. The algorithm is based on the wavelet analysis of the fault voltage and current signals. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested on a typical 154kV korean transmission line system under various fault conditions. From the tests presented in this paper it can be concluded that a fault location estimation algorithm using wavelet transform can precisely calculate the fault point for HIF.

  • With the widespread use of high-performance electronics and mobile communications, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding has become crucial for protection against malfunctioning of electronic equipment and harmful effects to human health. In addition, smart sensor technologies will be rapidly developed in untact (non-contact) environments and personal healthcare fields. Herein, we introduce our recently developed technologies for flexible multifunctional EMI shielding, and highly sensitive wearable pressure-strain and humidity sensors realized using low-dimensional nanomaterials.

  • New products often have in-service reliability problem despite an intensive development program. Therefore reliability data must be collected and analyzed, and improvements designed and implemented. A type of reliability incentive contract which has recently attracted a lot of attention is reliability improvement warranty(RIW). It has been employed by military, airlines, telecommunication systems, and public utilities. An RIW contract requires that the supplies carries out all repairs, modify the equipment to improve its reliability, and provides all spates needed, for a fixed period, for once-off fee. This paper presents the reliability growth analysis and management methods for in-service MC68 microprocessor, which is the main component of the base station controller in PCS(Personal Communication Service) telecommunication system. The methods will provide guidelines to monitor reliability program in planning RIW contract.

  • This paper presents a machine vision system, which inspects the measurement of the ALC block on a real-time basis in the production process. The automatic measurement system was established with a CCD camera, an image grabber, and a personal computer without using assembled measurement equipment. Images obtained by this system was processed by an algorithm, specially designed for an enhanced measurement accuracy. For the realization of the proposed algorithm, a preprocessing method that can be applied to overcome uneven lighting environment, boundary decision method, unit length decision method in uneven condition with rocking objects, and a projection of region using pixel summation are developed. From our experimental results, we could find that the required measurement accuracy specification is sufficiently satisfied by using the proposed method.

  • Seafarers are one of the main engines driving economic growth in the maritime sector. The International Maritime (IMO) Organization estimated that there were approximately 1.5 million seafarers around the world engaged in international trade in 2012. Data have shown that human casualties in maritime accidents around Japan have shown an increasing trend over the last ten years. One cause is human error, which is inseparable from the human element that influences mariner's decisions and actions. The Personal Identification (PIN) Safe method is one way to systematically identify substandard and unsafe actions by considering the error taxonomies associated with various scenarios for a maritime system. The results are based on analysis of the role of the human element in commonly reported unsafe actions when interacting with equipment and other systems. Furthermore, patterns of influencing shaping factors were observed on the basis of data processing; the aim of this study was to promote safety culture and provide an opportunity to improve safety at sea.

  • Because information on biological agents in the workplace is lacking, biological hazard analyses at the workplace to securely recognize the harmful factors with biological basis are desperately needed. This review concentrates on literatures published after 2010 that attempted to detect biological hazards to humans, especially workers, and the efforts to protect them against these factors. It is important to improve the current understanding of the health hazards caused by biological factors at the workplace. In addition, this review briefly describes these factors and provides some examples of their adverse health effects. It also reviews risk assessments, protection with personal protective equipment, prevention with training of workers, regulations, as well as vaccinations.
