  • Human-hand gestures have been used a means of communication among people for a long time, being interpreted as streams of tokens for a language. The signed language is a method of communication for hearing impaired person. Articulated gestures and postures of hands and fingers are commonly used for the signed language. This paper presents a system which recognizes the korean sign language (KSL) and translates the recognition results into a normal korean text and sound. A pair of data-gloves are used a sthe sensing device for detecting motions of hands and fingers. In this paper, we propose a dynamic gesture recognition mehtod by employing a fuzzy feature analysis method for efficient classification of hand motions, and applying a fuzzy min-max neural network to on-line pattern recognition.

  • The human faces do not have distinct features unlike other general objects. In general the features of eyes, nose and mouth which are first recognized when human being see the face are defined. These features have different characteristics depending on different human face. In this paper, We propose a face recognition algorithm using the hidden Markov model(HMM). In the preprocessing stage, we find edges of a face using the locally adaptive threshold scheme and extract features based on generic knowledge of a face, then construct a database with extracted features. In training stage, we generate HMM parameters for each person by using the forward-backward algorithm. In the recognition stage, we apply probability values calculated by the HMM to input data. Then the input face is recognized by the euclidean distance of face feature vector and the cross-correlation between the input image and the database image. Computer simulation shows that the proposed HMM algorithm gives higher recognition rate compared with conventional face recognition algorithms.

  • In the face recognition technology, which has been studied a lot, the security of the face recognition technology is improved by receiving the depth data as a weak point for the 2D. In this paper, we expect the effect of cost reduction by enhancing the security of 2D by taking new features of eye flicker that each person possesses as new data information.

  • In face recognition based on the Karhunen-Loeve approximation, amplitudespectra of Fourier transformed facial images were used. We found taht the use of amplitude spetra gives not only the shift-invariance property but also some improvment of recognition rate. This is because the distance between the varing faces of a person compared with that between the different persons perfomed computer experiments on face recognitio with varing facial images obtained from total 55 male and 25 females. We confirmed that the use of amplitude spectra of Fourier-trnsformed facial imagesgives better recognition rate for avariety of varying facial images including shifted ones than the use of direct facial images does.

  • In this study, we compare the recognition performance using PCA and RBFNNs for introducing robust face recognition system to pose variations based on pose estimation. proposed face recognition system uses Honda/UCSD database for comparing recognition performance. Honda/UCSD database consists of 20 people, with 5 poses per person for a total of 500 face images. Extracted image consists of 5 poses using Multiple-Space PCA and each pose is performed by using (2D)2PCA for performing pose classification. Linear polynomial function is used as connection weight of RBFNNs Pattern Classifier and parameter coefficient is set by using Particle Swarm Optimization for model optimization. Proposed (2D)2PCA-based face pose classification performs recognition performance with PCA, (2D)2PCA and RBFNNs.

  • Facial expression recognition (FER) plays a very significant role in computer vision, pattern recognition, and image processing applications such as human computer interaction as it provides sufficient information about emotions of people. For video-based facial expression recognition, depth cameras can be better candidates over RGB cameras as a person's face cannot be easily recognized from distance-based depth videos hence depth cameras also resolve some privacy issues that can arise using RGB faces. A good FER system is very much reliant on the extraction of robust features as well as recognition engine. In this work, an efficient novel approach is proposed to recognize some facial expressions from time-sequential depth videos. First of all, efficient Local Binary Pattern (LBP) features are obtained from the time-sequential depth faces that are further classified by Generalized Discriminant Analysis (GDA) to make the features more robust and finally, the LBP-GDA features are fed into Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) to train and recognize different facial expressions successfully. The depth information-based proposed facial expression recognition approach is compared to the conventional approaches such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) where the proposed one outperforms others by obtaining better recognition rates.

  • Biometrics is essential for person identification because of its uniqueness from each individuals. Face recognition technology has advantage over other biometrics because of its convenience and non-intrusive characteristics. In this paper, we will present a overview of face recognition technology including face detection, feature extraction, and face recognition system. For face detection, we will describe template based method and face component based approach. PCA and LDA approach will be discussed for feature extraction, and nearest neighbor classifiers -will be covered for matching. Large database and the standardized performance evaluation methodology is essential in order to support state-of-the-art face recognition system. Also, 3D based face recognition technology is the key solution for the pose, lighting and expression variations in many applications.

  • We developed an augmented new reality tool for vision-based hand gesture recognition in a camera-projector system. Our recognition method uses modified Fourier descriptors for the classification of static hand gestures. Hand segmentation is based on a background subtraction method, which is improved to handle background changes. Most of the recognition methods are trained and tested by the same service-person, and training phase occurs only preceding the interaction. However, there are numerous situations when several untrained users would like to use gestures for the interaction. In our new practical approach the correction of faulty detected gestures is done during the recognition itself. Our main result is the quick on-line adaptation to the gestures of a new user to achieve user-independent gesture recognition.

  • The local appearance-based method is one of the face recognition methods that divides face image into small areas and extracts features from each area of face image using statistical analysis. It collects classification results of each area and decides identity of a face image using a voting scheme by integrating classification results of each area of a face image. The conventional local appearance-based method divides face images into small pieces and uses all the pieces in recognition process. In this paper, we propose a local appearance-based method that makes use of only the relatively important facial components. The proposed method detects the facial components such as eyes, nose and mouth that differs much from person to person. In doing so, the proposed method detects exact locations of facial components using support vector machines (SVM). Based on the detected facial components, a number of small images that contain the facial parts are constructed. Then it extracts features from each facial component image using principal components analysis (PCA). We compared the performance of the proposed method to those of the conventional methods. The results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional local appearance-based method while preserving the advantages of the conventional local appearance-based method.
