In order to investigate the removal effect of cadmium by polyphenol compound extracted from persimmon leaves(Diospyros kaki folium), animal test was done. Two fractions such as F-1 and F-2 from persimmon leaves were compared with their safety and function. The food intake of group F-1 and F-2 considerably decreased within 1% level. Cadmium addition influenced to rat growth(a tested animal), but food efficiency ratio(FER) wasn't shown any considerable difference in F-1 and F-2, as compared to the control. Cadmium content of liver, kidney and femur considerably decreased within 1% level in F-1 and F-2, compared to the control, cadmium content of liver decreased 25% in F-1, 28% in F-2 3150 decreased 22% md 25% in kidney. In femur, also decreased 53% in F-1 and 59% in F-2 respectively. The test of cadmium content in feces indicate that the content considerably increased within 1% level in both group F-1 and F-2, as compared to the control(42% in F-1, 54% in F-2). As shown the above results, have seen the removal effect of cadmium by polyphenol compound.
Leaf blight outbreak was investigated in sweet persimmon tree orchards in Korea during a three-year period from 1995 to 1997. The man percentage of sweet perismmon leaves blighted by Pestalotiopsis theae was 15.9%. The highest disease incidence was surveyed to 20% in Milryang. The disease began from early June to late October, and peaked in September and October. The lesion size on leaf ranged mainly 1-3 cm. The typical symptoms were large grayish concentric lesions of oval patterns of either mesophyll or margin of the leaf, and olde trees were more susceptible than younger ones.
As a series of study on the removal of astringency and production of tannin substances, this experiment was conducted to investigate changes of tannin contents and microscopic observation on leaves of persimmon(Diospyros kaki L.). Changes of tannin contents of leaves and fruits in Daegu Bansi(astringent variety) were of similar tendency in content of total and soluble tannin during growth. It seemed therefore that tannin contents of leaves in astringent variety were closely concerned with tannin of fruits. But Fuyu(sweet variety) was different from each other during its growth. Histological form of leaves in microscopic observation had similar tendency between astringent and sweet varieties. It was observed that tannin substances were contained in epidermis cells of levels, that tannin substances were transfered in phloems of nerves system, and that tannin cell existed too in the vicinity of nerves system.
The effects of dried leaf powders and water and ethanol extracts of persimmon and green tea on lipid metabolism, lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzyme activity were investigated in 12-month-old rats. Forty-nine male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 520$\pm$19g were blocked into seven groups according to body weight. Rats were raised for four weeks with control(no tea leaf powder or extracts) and experimental diets containing either 5%(w/w) dried leaf powders of persimmon(Diospyros kaki Thunb) or green tea(Camellia sinensis O. Ktze), or water or ethanol extract from equal amounts of each dried tea powder. Food intakes of all tea diet groups were higher than that of control. Weight gains and food efficiency ratios of all tea diet groups were not significantly different from those of control. All tea diets decreased plasma triglyceride level, especially, green tea powder and persimmon ethanol diets were more effective than other diet. All the tea diet groups showed decrease in liver triglyceride level, and persimmon powder and ethanol extract increased fecal triglyceride excretion. Plasma cholesterol levels of all the tea diet groups were not significantly different from the control, but control. Fecal cholesterliver cholesterol concegroups were significantlntrations of all tea y lower than that of ol excretions of persimmon powder, green tea ethanol extract, persommon ethanol extract and green tea ethanol extract groups were significantly higher than that of control. Plasma and liver thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(TBARS) concentrations of all the tea diet groups were lower than that of control. Especially, plasma TBARS concentrations of green tea powder and persimmon ethanol extract groups were sinificantly low. Red blood cell(RBC) superoxide dismutase(SOD) activities of persimmon ethanol extract and green tea water extract groups were increased, and RBC catalase activities of all experimental groups were not significantly different. RBC glutathione peroxidase(GSH-px) activities of persimmon ethanol extract, persimmon water extract and green tea powder groups were increased. Liver SOD activities of all the tea diet groups except green tea ethanol extract group were higher than that of control. Liver catalase activities of all experimental groups were not significantly different, and liver GSH-px activity of green tea powder group was significantly higher than that of control. In conclusion, dried leaf powders, and water and ethanol extracts of persimmon and green tea were effective in lowering lipid level, inhibiting lipid peroxidation and increasing antioxdative enzyme activities in 12-month-old rat. Green tea leaf powder with high contents of flavonoids and water soluble dietar fiber was most effective in lowering plasma triglyceride, cholesterol and TBARS level. The persimmon leaf tea was produced from persimmon leaves by three different methods (conventional, steamed, fermented) and the changes of total vitamin C and superoxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity were investigated. The amount of total vitamin C was the highest in fermented persimmon leaf tea which was 47% of total vitamin C of raw persimmon leaves. The SOD-like activity of conventional and fermented persimmon leaf teas were a little higher than that of steamed. The total vitamin C of steamed persimmon leaf tea was decreased slowly as the extraction time was increased. That of fermented persimmon leaf tea was increased generally at $60^{\circ}C\;and\;70^{\circ}C$, and increased until 5min and then decreased at $80^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$, The optimum extraction condition of total vitamin C in fermented persimmon leaf tea was 3min and 5min at $80^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$, 5min and 10min at $60^{\circ}C$. The total vitamin C of conventional persimmon leaf tea was so little that could not be measured by DNP method. The SOD-like activity of conventional and steamed persimmon leaf teas were increased and that of fermented showed the trend of increasing-decreasing-increasing. Fermented persimmon leaf tea had higher SOD-like activity than conventional and steamed at all tested conditions, and the optimum extraction condition of SOD-like activity was 3min and 10min at $80^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$.
To understand changes in composition and distribution of nutrients during early shoot growth of persimmon, organic compounds and inorganic elements of terminal shoots were analyzed for about 40 days from the time of foliation. Sample shoots were collected from mature 'Fuyu' trees for this three-year experiment and they were divided to stem, leaves, and the fruits including flower buds at the earliest stage. During shoot growth, concentration of soluble sugars increased in both leaves and fruits, but that of starch increased only in leaves. Those of amino acids tended to decrease in all the parts but there was no consistent change in proteins. As shoots grew, contents of all the organic compounds in a shoot increased, and they were especially higher in May leaves accounting for more than 60% of the shoot total for each nutrient. Along with shoot growth, concentrations of N and P gradually decreased in all three parts, while K decreased only in stem. However, those of Ca and Mg did not show notable changes in all the parts with wide variations depending on the year. Due to the quantitative increase in growth, contents of inorganic elements in a shoot increased in all the parts and the leaves accounted for 54-82% of the shoot total. At the cessation time of extension growth, a shoot contained 526-768 mg of soluble sugars, 245-844 mg of starch, 26-31 mg of amino acids, and 66-103 mg of proteins for three years. On the other hand, a shoot contained 203-388 mg of K, the greatest among the inorganic elements, followed by 132-159 mg of N. Changes of the nutrients in a shoot were much greater during the earlier stage of growth after foliation than during the later stage toward growth cessation, suggesting the importance of mobilizing reserve nutrients for the early growth of the shoots. The results of this study also suggested that the rate of nutrient changes, especially during the earlier stage of shoot growth, could be affected by environmental and cultural conditions.
Relationships among climate changes, early frost, and fruit growth were studied during the final month to harvest of late-maturing 'Fuyu' persimmon (Diospyros kaki) to assess the changes in fruit characteristics during this critical period. The heavy frost on Nov. 16 defoliated more than 70% of the leaves, but with little damage on the fruits. However, all the leaves were defoliated by the heavy frost on Nov. 20, and all the fruits were cold-damaged by $-3.3^{\circ}C$ on Nov. 21. Fruit weight increased by 8-25 g per week from Oct. 25 (142 days after full bloom) to Nov. 15, reaching to 250 g, but it decreased by 3-4 g per week after the frost. Hunter a value of fruit skin gradually increased until the last harvest on Nov. 29 with a temporary halt in early Nov. when temperature was high, whereas fruit firmness rapidly decreased after the frost on Nov. 21. Fruit soluble solids were $15.7-16.1^{\circ}Brix$ for the final month. When some branches were covered with non-woven fabrics to avoid direct contact with frost, the fruits on the branches were not visually damaged by the low temperature although 40-60% of their leaves were defoliated on Nov. 16. However, low temperature on Nov. 20 and 21 defoliated all the leaves, causing cold damage on the fruits. There was a highly significant correlation between the fruit diameter and its weight ($R^2$ = 0.73-0.91). So, the regression equations could be used to estimate weight from diameter of the fruits sampled from the branches with the non-woven fabrics. The calculated fruit weight reached to a maximum of 240 g on Nov. 15. Daily increases in fruit weight were 1.1-2.5 g from Oct. 25 to 31, 1.9-3.5 g from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7, and 1.4-1.6 g from Nov. 7 to 12. However, fruit weight decreased by 0.3-1 g per day after the cold damage on Nov. 21. The results indicate that the most appropriate harvest time could be dependent on relationship of fruit growth to climate.
Total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were investigated in leaves of organic apricot, filbert, mulberry, persimmon, and pomegranate trees during growing season. Total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in leaves of organic apricot and filbert trees were gradually increased from May to June, attained peak in July, thereafter decreased to minimum level in October. In leaves of organic mulberry tree total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were simultaneously increased from May to June and sharply decrease to very low level. The leaves of organic persimmon trees showed very high level of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity from May to June, thereafter gradually decrease to October. The leaves of organic pomegranate trees showed extraordinarily highest level of total phenolic compounds among five fruit trees investigated in the study during growing stages, as well as maintained higher than 91 percent of antioxidant activity from May to October. Correlation coefficients between total phenolic compound and antioxidant activity of the leaves of five organic trees were the highest in mulberry leaves, and then persimmon, filbert, apricot, and pomegranate, respectively. However, correlation coefficients between total phenolic compound and antioxidant activity of the leaves of organic pomegranate were very low level, and not significant in their relationship.
The characteristic Ramularia type conidia of Mycosphaerella nawae were formed on naturally infected leaves. Artificial inoculation with the conidia induced typical symptom on leaves, which was not distinguishable from those of ascospore infection, which has been considered as a primary inoculum source in nature. Also the morphology of the conidia produced on PDA was not different from those formed on artificially inoculated leaves or on naturally infected leaves at later stage of symptom development. Accordingly, we report the role of the conidia as a secondary inoculum of the circular leaf spot pathogen of persimmon for the first time.

The lyophilization of the solution extracted from 60 percent of acetone applied to persimmon leaves, the compounding process in accordance with the solution's concentration, and the gel filteration through Sephadex G-50 of biologically activated substances obstructing enzyme activity, such as tyrosinase, xanthine oxidase, and angiotesin converting enzyme (ACE) led to the assumption that polyphenol was the compound serving as biologically activated substances obstructing enzyme activity. Xanthine oxidase involved in pruine metabolism oxidizes hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid. In the continuous study for natural compound, nine flavan-3-ols have been isolated from the persimmon leaves. The structures of (+)-catechin, (+)-gallocatechin, procyanidin B-1, pyrocyanidin C-1, prodelphinidin B-3, gallocatechin-$(4{\alpha}{\rightarrow}8)$-catechin, procyanidin B-7-3-O-gallate, procyanidin C-1-3'-3'-3'-O-trigallate and (-)-epigallocatechin-$(4{\alpha}{\rightarrow}8)$-epigallocatechin-$(4{\alpha}{\rightarrow}8)$-catechin were established by NMR and their inhibitory effect on xanthine oxidase activity was investigated. Procyanidin B-7-3-O-gallate, (-)-epigallocatechin-$(4{\alpha}{\rightarrow}8)$-epigallocatechin-$(4{\alpha}{\rightarrow}8)$-catechin and procyanidin C-1-3'-3'-3'-O-trigallate showed 94%, 90.69%, 80.90% inhibition at $100\;({\mu})M$ and inhibited on the angiotensin converting enzyme respectively. Procyanidin B-7-3-O-gallate and procyanidin C-1-3'-3'-3'-O-trigallate showed 66%, 63% inhibition at $100\;({\mu})M$ and inhibited on the xanthine oxidase competitively. Procyanidin C-1-3'-3'-3'-O-trigallate showed 70% inhibition at $100\;({\mu})M$ and inhibited on the tyrosinase competitively.
