  • This study evaporates ZnO layer thickness' differently with RF sputtering method on Si Wafer(n-100). This study is performed to examine the characteristics of photon energy and dielectric loss according to the thickness of ZnO and increase the reliability and reproduction of ZnO thin film. It is confirmed that the variation of electric Permittivity by frequency is resulted from the formation of particles within thin film, the particle size and the polarization on grain boundary. Peak of electric Permittivity value of thin film has slower and less value in early low wavelength by the coulomb force involved in carrier combination according to the increase of frequency. Reversal of electric Permittivity values is induced by dipole polarization shown in the dielectric of thin film. Complex electric constant $({\varepsilon}_1,{\varepsilon}_2)$ has larger peak values as it's thickness is thinner and then it is larger according to the increase of frequency. Electric Permittivity by photon energy has large value in imaginary number and is reduced exponentially by the increase of carrier density according to that of photon energy.

  • In this days, the thinner film of dielectric materials is required while its capacitance is required to be still large at the VLSI process. Most of such VLSI have MOS structures. For the research on this requirement, MOS capacitors were fabricated on the silicon wafer in four different thickness groups by RF sputtering method. SiO of the SiO/TiN film is used as the insulating layer and TiN is chosen as the barrier against the diffusion of Al which is the terminal connected by ohmic contact because TiN has the advantageous properties such as good thermal stability and very low diffusion rate in spite of its relatively low specific resistance. In this study their electrical and optical characteristics are investigated to find refractive index, absorption coefficient and Permittivity.

  • In order to evaluate groundwater movement and the infiltration of contaminants, such as petroleum products, the determination of porosity and effective porosity is very important. Porosity and effective porosity are important physical parameters that determine the transfer and movement of water and solutes in porous media. Various methods of determining these parameters have been developed, with varying degrees of accuracy and applicability. Most of the existing methods produce static results. They do not produce instantaneous and real time of porosity and effective porosity in a porous media. In this study, we used a new permittivity method called Frequency Domain Reflectometry with Vector analyzer (FDR-V) to determine the porosity and effective porosity of some sand samples in the laboratory. The advantage of the FDR-V method is that it instantaneously determines the temporal variation of dielectric constants of porous media. Then, the porosity and the effective porosity of porous media are computed using well established empirical equations. Results obtained from the FDR-V method compared favorably with results from other permittivity methods such as gravimetric, injection and replacement tests. The ratio of effective porosity to porosity was 85 - 92 %, when FDR-V was used. This value compared favourably with 90 %, which has been usually quoted in previous studies. Considering the convenience and its applicability, the EDR-V permittivity holds a great potential in porous media and contaminant transport studies.

  • We present a high frequency electromagnetic (EM) inversion scheme for detecting and characterizing a fracture using single-hole data. At high frequencies, say above tens of mega-hertz, since displacement currents cannot be ignored, electrical permittivity as well as electrical conductivity is to be considered together for analyzing the EM scattering data. In this paper, we have developed a three-step inversion scheme to map the fracture and to evaluate its electrical conductivity and permittivity. We performed EM profiling along the z-axis using three-component receivers for each source. The model was excited by a vertical magnetic dipole and the resistant magnetic fields were inverted using the non-linear least-squares method. Background resistivity and permittivity were easily obtained using vertical magnetic fields below 1 MHz and above 10 MHz, respectively. Both the vertical and dipping sheets were successfully mapped using the phase difference between 40 and 41 MHz. The electrical property of the sheet was well resolved using the information obtained in the previous two steps and secondary magnetic fields. Our study shows the potential of imaging the fracture in single-hole survey environment using the high frequency EM method.

  • The variation of ground-penetrating radar(GPR) signal characteristics from dielectric-filled nonmetallic pipes buried in inhomogeneous ground are compared through a numerical simulation. The relative permittivity distribution of the ground is generated by using the continuous random media(CRM) technique. As a function of the relative permittivity of the material filling the nonmetallic pipe buried in the ground media, GPR signals are simulated by using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. We show that, unlike the case for homogeneous ground, the distortion characteristics of the reflected waves caused by the front convex surface and the rear concave surface of the pipe buried in inhomogeneous ground are different depending on the permittivity contrast between the inside and outside of the pipe.

  • In this paper, a waveguide-type resonator with a slot is proposed to measure permittivity of thin film from resonant frequency shifting by an attached MUT(Material Under Test). The MUT on the slot shifts resonant frequency by perturbation of electromagnetic field. Amount of shifting resonance frequency is dependent on the permittivity of MUT, and that relation is obtained from numerical simulation. The measured relative permittivity of a thin film with thickness of $65{\mu}m$ is 3.3492 with standard error of ${\pm}0.0605$ in the frequency range of 2 GHz to 3 GHz. Also the proposed method is compared with other measuring methods such as dielectric resonator and waveguide probe systems.

  • Hexagonal Ba-ferrites are widely suggested as materials for small antennas. In this paper, the sintering behavior and magneto-electric properties of $Ba_3Co_{2-2x}Mn_{2x}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ($0.1{\leq}x{\leq}0.5$) ceramics were investigated for small antenna application. All samples of $Ba_3Co_{2-2x}Mn_{2x}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ceramics were prepared by the solid-state reaction method and sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$. From the XRD patterns of the sintered $Ba_3Co_{2-2x}Mn_{2x}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ceramics, the Z-type phases were found to be the main phases. The real part of permittivity and permeability of the $Ba_3Co_{2-2x}Mn_{2x}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ceramics decreased with frequency. On the other hand, loss tangents of permittivity and permeability tended to behave opposite to real part of permittivity and permeability. The real part of permeability was affected by Mn additions. The real part of permittivity, the loss tangent of permittivity and the real part of permeability, the loss tangent of permeability of $Ba_3Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.8}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ceramics were 19.774, 0.176 and 15.183, 0.073, respectively, at 510 MHz. In order to investigate the effect of magneto-dielectric ceramics on antenna, PIFA (Planar Inverted F Antenna) was simulated with CST (Computer Simulation Technology). The operating frequency of antenna was decreased without considerable change of bandwidth by using the $Ba_3Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.8}Fe_{24}O_{41}$ ceramics as the carrier.

  • In this paper, a design method for a high-sensitivity microstrip patch sensor antenna (MPSA) loaded with a bent-slot was studied for the permittivity measurement. The bent-slot similar to a single-ring complementary split ring resonator was added along a radiating edge of the patch in order to enhance the sensitivity to the permittivity. The sensitivity of the proposed MPSA was compared with that of a conventional rectangular MPSA and a thin rectangular-slotted MPSA. Three MPSAs were designed and fabricated on a 0.76-mm-thick RF-35 substrate so that the input reflection coefficient would resonate at 2.5 GHz in the absence of the superstrate under test. When five different Taconic substrates with a relative permittivity ranging from 2.17 to 10.2 were used as the superstrate under test, experiment results show that the sensitivity of the proposed MPSA, which is measured by the shift in the resonant frequency of the input reflection coefficient, is 4.1 to 6.1 times higher than that of the conventional MPSA.

  • A conductivity of soot at microwave frequency is presented using a novel technique for complex permittivity of materials. The method overcomes limitations of conventional methods which are cavity perturbation and transmission/reflection method. Resonant frequencies and Q factors are measured and simulated for the cylindrical cavity, and they are compared to each other. Similar material property of both real material and simulation material produce similar values of resonant frequency and Q factor. The complex permittivity of material can be determined by simulating the cavity to change material property until the simulation results are nearly the same as the measurement results. Cylindrical cavity has been realized for measurement at 880 MHz, and conductivity of soot is measured. A sample was made by depositing the soot on the glass. The proposed method shows that the conductivity of soot is 11 S/m.
