  • Comparison on the performances between the Halbach array type permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (HA-PMLSM) and the convensional array type permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (CA-PMLSM) was made with finite element analysis (FEA) and experiment. The HA-PMLSM is seen to be superior to the CA-PMLSM. Optimum ratio of magnet length to slot pitch of the HA-PMLSM which reduces the detent force was determined. Also, Comparison of forces of the HA-PMLSM and the CA-PMLSM with minimum detent force is presented.

  • In this paper, magnetic flux distributions of several permanent magnet arrays, including Halbach array, are analyzed and compared. Also, braking force characteristics on a moving solid conductor in the eddy current brake systems with such magnet arrays are analyzed. Then, a new performance index taking into account the maximum braking force and the volume of the magnet is introduced for the comparison and case study of permanent magnet arrays. By changing the lengths, magnetization directions and the height of the permanent magnet arrays, a higher braking force per volume of the magnet can be achieved.

  • This paper introduces an innovative hybrid array consisting of both permanent and electro magnets. It will enable us to develop an active control mechanism for underdamped electro-dynamic suspension (EDS) Maglev systems. The proposed scheme is based on the Halbach array configuration which takes the major technical advantage from the original Halbach characteristics: a strongly concentrated magnetic field on one side of the array and a cancelled field on the opposite side. In addition, the unique feature of the proposed concept only differs from the Halbach array with permanent magnets. The total magnetic field of the array can be actively controlled through the current of the electro-magnet's coils. As a result, the magnetic force produced by the proposed hybrid array can also be controlled actively. This study focuses on the magnetic characteristics and capability of the proposed array as compared to the basic Halbach concept. The results show that the proposed array is capable of producing not only an equivalent suspension force of the basic Halbach permanent magnet array but also a controlled mode. Consequently, the effectiveness of the proposed array confirms that this study can be used as a technical framework to develop an active control mechanism for an EDS Maglev system.

  • Portable low-cost magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems have the potential to enable "point-of-care" and timely MRI diagnosis, and to make this imaging modality available to routine scans and to people in underdeveloped countries and areas. With simplicity, no maintenance, no power consumption, and low cost, permanent magnets/magnet arrays/magnet assemblies are attractive to be used as a source of static magnetic field to realize the portability and to lower the cost for an MRI scanner. However, when taking the canonical Fourier imaging approach and using linear gradient fields, homogeneous fields are required in a scanner, resulting in the facts that either a bulky magnet/magnet array is needed, or the imaging volume is too small to image an organ if the magnet/magnet array is scaled down to a portable size. Recently, with the progress on image reconstruction based on non-linear gradient field, static field patterns without spatial linearity can be used as spatial encoding magnetic fields (SEMs) to encode MRI signals for imaging. As a result, the requirements for the homogeneity of the static field can be relaxed, which allows permanent magnets/magnet arrays with reduced sizes, reduced weight to image a bigger volume covering organs such as a head. It offers opportunities of constructing a truly portable low-cost MRI scanner. For this exciting potential application, permanent magnets/magnet arrays have attracted increased attention recently. A magnet/magnet array is strongly associated with the imaging volume of an MRI scanner, image reconstruction methods, and RF excitation and RF coils, etc. through field patterns and field homogeneity. This paper offers a review of permanent magnets and magnet arrays of different kinds, especially those that can be used for spatial encoding towards the development of a portable and low-cost MRI system. It is aimed to familiarize the readers with relevant knowledge, literature, and the latest updates of the development on permanent magnets and magnet arrays for MRI. Perspectives on and challenges of using a permanent magnet/magnet array to supply a patterned static magnetic field, which does not have spatial linearity nor high field homogeneity, for image reconstruction in a portable setup are discussed.

  • Surface permanent magnet-type vernier motors with three magnet array-type rotors (parallel magnetized type, repulsion type, and Halbach type) are compared based on the pull-out torque. It was clarified that increasing the rotor radius increases the pull-out torque at a fixed three-phase alternating voltage. The mechanism for the pull-out torque increase on each magnet array type was different, when the effects of the increase were analyzed based on an induced electromotive force and a synchronous reactance. As a result, the design of the Halbach-type rotor was found to be especially effective for achieving high pull-out torque, because this array type achieves a large induced electromotive force $E_0$ and a small synchronous reactance $x_s$.

  • In this study, a room temperature AMRR (Active magnetic regenerative refrigerator) was fabricated, and experimentally investigated. Gadolinium (Gd) was selected as a magnetic refrigerant with Curie temperature of 293 K. Permanent magnet was utilized to magnetize and demagnetize the AMR. To produce large magnetic field above 1 T in the magnetic refrigeration space, a special arrangement of permanent magnets, so called Halbach array, is employed. Sixteen segments of the permanent magnets magnetized different direction, constitute a hollow cylindrical shaped permanent magnet. The AMR is reciprocated along the bore of the magnet array and produces cooling power. Helium is selected as the working fluid and a helium compressor is utilized to supply helium flow to the regenerator. The fabricated AMRR has different structure and compared to a convectional AMRR since it has an additional volume after the regenerator. Therefore, the cooling ability is generated not only by magnetocaloric effect of magnetic refrigerant but also by the pulse tube effect. It is verified that the cooling ability of AMR is increased due to the magnetocalric effect by the fact that the temperature span becomes $16^{\circ}C$ while the temperature span is only $8^{\circ}C$ when the magnetic field is not applied to the regenerator.

  • A Halbach array is a special arrangement of permanent magnets which augments the magnetic field on one side of the device while cancelling the field to near zero on the other side. The application of this Halbach array magnet to the electrodynamic suspension for Maglev train has been recently studied in order to increase the levitation capability. This paper is focused on analytical method of the magnetic levitation system using Halbach array magnet. The suitability of the proposed method is verified with comparing to a finite element method. From this study, it is confirmed that the proposed method provides a reasonable solution with a little analysis time to the finite element method and the magnetic levitation system using Halbach array magnet is stable dynamically.

  • In this paper, a synchronous permanent magnet planar motor (SPMPM) with Halbach array is proposed. First, we give the equations of the magnetic scalar potential and a series of boundary conditions. The magnetization and flux density distribution of Halbach array are obtained by analytical method; then, the characteristics of this SPMPM such as inductance, back-EMF, and thrust are evaluated. At last, the experiment results are used to verify the analysis property of this SPMPM. By comparison, it can be concluded that the analysis of SPMPM with Halbach magnet array is credible and feasible.
