When peripheral axons are damaged, neuronal injury signaling pathways induce transcriptional changes that support axon regeneration and consequent functional recovery. The recent development of bioinformatics techniques has allowed for the identification of many of the regeneration-associated genes that are regulated by neural injury, yet it remains unclear how global changes in transcriptome are coordinated. In this article, we review recent studies on the epigenetic mechanisms orchestrating changes in gene expression in response to nerve injury. We highlight the importance of epigenetic mechanisms in discriminating efficient axon regeneration in the peripheral nervous system and very limited axon regrowth in the central nervous system and discuss the therapeutic potential of targeting epigenetic regulators to improve neural recovery.

Neurofibroma is a benign, heterogenous peripheral nerve sheath tumor arising from the connective tissue of peripheral nerve sheaths, especially the endoneurium. Its intraoral occurrence is uncommon and its occurrence within mandible is extremely rare. A case of solitary intraosseous neurofibroma of the mandible involving masticator space in a 8-year-old male is reported. He was referred from a private local clinic with a chief complaint of limitation in opening of the mouth. Panoramic and cone-beam computed tomographic images showed unilocular radiolucent lesion with scalloped border at the right mandibular ramus, connected posteriorly to the enlarged mandibular foramen and anteriorly to the mandibular canal. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images showed soft tissue mass of isointensity compared with muscles. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images showed peripheral enhancement and T2-weighted images showed the heterogeneous hyperintense mass with extension between lateral and medial pterygoid muscles. The tumor was surgically removed under general anesthesia and diagnosed to be neurofibroma at the biopsy.
Vasomotor areas were identified by stimulating various sites of the medulla electrically in adult cats anesthetized with a-chloralose and their correlation with somatosympathetic pressor or depressor responses was investigated. Followings are the results obtained: 1. Pressor areas were found in the rostral ventrolateral, the caudal ventrolateral and the rostral dorsolateral medulla. 2. Separate depressor areas were found dorsal and ventral to the rostral ventrolateral pressor area. 3. Some areas showed biphasic responses: depressor responses to low frequency[1 \ulcorner2 Hz] and pressor responses to high frequency[20 \ulcorner100 Hz] stimulation 4. Lesions on the rostral ventrolateral pressor areas abolished the somatosympathetic pressor responses to the stimulation of peripheral afferent nerves, while the depressor responses remained. Lesions on the caudal ventrolateral pressor area affected neither the pressor nor depressor responses to the peripheral nerve stimulation. 5. Lesions on the depressor areas resulted in decreased depressor responses to the peripheral nerve stimulation, but to a lesser degree than that resulted from lesions on the pressor areas. 6. A microinjection of glutamate solution to the pressor area resulted in a prolonged pressor response, while glutamate injection to the depressor areas did not elicit depressor responses. From the above results, it is concluded that there are separate pressor and depressor areas in the rostral medulla of cats and each area plays a role in somatosympathetic pressor and depressor responses, respectively.
Neural decoding is important to recognize the user's intention for controlling a neuro-prosthetic hand. This paper proposes a real-time decoding method for multi-channel peripheral neural activity. Peripheral nerve signals were measured from the median and radial nerves, and motion artifacts were removed based on locally fitted polynomials. Action potentials were then classified using a k-means algorithm. The firing rate of action potentials was extracted as a feature vector and its dimensionality was reduced by a self-organizing feature map. Finally, a multi-layer perceptron was used to classify hand motions. In monkey experiments, all processes were completed within a real-time constrain, and the hand motions were recognized with a high success rate.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine effects of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor on muscle weight and myofibrillar protein content of affected and unaffected hindlimb muscles in rats with neuropathic pain induced by unilateral peripheral nerve injury. Methods: Neuropathic pain was induced by ligation and cutting of the left L5 spinal nerve. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of two groups: The NOSI group (n=19) had NOS inhibitor (L-NAME) injections daily for 14 days, and the Vehicle group (n=20) had vehicle injections daily for 14 days. Withdrawal threshold, body weight, food intake and activity were measured every day. At 15 days all rats were anesthetized and soleus, plantaris and gastrocnemius muscles were dissected from hindlimbs. Muscle weight and myofibrillar protein content of the dissected muscles were determined. Results: The NOSI group showed significant increases as compared to the Vehicle group for body weight at 15 days, muscle weight and myofibrillar protein content of the unaffected soleus and gastrocnemius. The NOSI group demonstrated a higher pain threshold than the vehicle group. Conclusion: NOSI for 14 days attenuates unaffected soleus and gastrocnemius muscle atrophy in neuropathic pain model.

Glial fibrillary acidic proteins (GFAP) are a group of intermediate filaments that are distributed in the cytoplasm of glial cells. GFAP immunoreactivity (GFAP-IR) increase after central and peripheral nerve injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine change of GFAP-IR in rat trigeminal ganglion satellite cells following the axotomy of inferior alveolar nerve(IAN). The immunohistochemistry was carried out using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex(ABC) method. 1. Control group : Astrocytes in central root of trigeminal ganglion had strong GFAP-IR, but satellite cells of trigeminal ganglion occasionally had GFAP-IR. The patterns of reactivity in satellite cells of trigeminal ganglion were not concenturated in any specific region of trigeminal ganglion. 2. Three day group after IAN axotomy : There were highly GFAP-IR in satellite cells of trigeminal ganglion in mandibular region. GFAP-IR in maxillary and ophthalmic regions were less intense compared to mandibular region. 3. Seven day group after IAN axotomy : GFAP-IR that were increased compared to control group were seen in the mandibular region. But GFAP-IR were less intense compared to three day group. These results suggest that GFAP-IR increase in specific region of trigeminal ganglion following peripheral axotomy. therefore we suppose that GFAP study offer research tool in trigeminal neuralgia.

Facial nerver paralysis is classified as Supranuclear, Peripheral and Nuclear. It is mostly Spontaneous Peripheral Facial Paralysis(Bell's palsy) or Supranuclear Paralysis by C.V.A, but Nuclear Facial Nerve Paralysis is rarely reported. We treated a 64-years-old female patient who had 7-years history of C.V.A with hypertension and heart disease, and complained of these symptoms; left facial palsy, ocular dysmetria, diplopia, and right extremity weakness. We diagnosed as direct attack from the wind pathogen(風邪入中) with deficiency of both Gi(Qi, vital energy) and blood(氣血雨虛), and employed Oriental medical treatments; herb-medication, acupuncture and moxa therapy. The result was relatively acceptable. So We report this case with a brief review of related literatures.
Schwann cells play a critical role for myelination in peripheral nerve system. It also plays an important role in nerve protection and regeneration. In peripheral nerve damage, regeneration is induced by the migration and proliferation of Schwann cells which were promoted by suppressing the oxidative stress. In this study, Human placental extract was prepared by homogenization and estimated its efficacy in RSC96 cells. Placental extract exhibited a protective effect against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress in RSC96 cells, confirmed by MTT assay. Furthermore, placental extract decreased intracellular ROS against oxidative stress, confirmed by DCFH-DA assay. Autophagy was visualized with Cyto-ID staining to confirm the autophagy activity of placental extracts. The activity of autophagy was confirmed by immunoblot analysis of autophagy flux-associated proteins such as LC3 conversion and SQSTM1 degradation. Thus, we confirmed the antioxidant effect of placental extract to protect RSC96 cells from oxidative stress, and observed that it activated autophagy and restored autophagy flux.

Two patients with sequelae of peripheral facial nerve palsy were treated with Facial Chuna Manual Therapy (FCMT) and acupuncture over 6 months. The House-Brackmann (HB) scale, facial nerve grading system 2.0 (FNGS), the scale of Peitersen, the scale of Murata, and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) were used to assess the effects of treatment. The HB scale, FNGS and NRS scores showed improvement for both patients (Case 1: HB scale 5 to 3, FNGS 4 to 2, NRS 10 to 5; Case 2: HB scale 5 to 3, FNGS 4 to 3, NRS 10 to 2.5) following 6 months of treatment. The scores for the Peitersen and Murata scales showed improvement over 6 months in Case 1 (Peitersen 2 to 1, Murata 10 to 7), but there was no change in Case 2 over the test period (4 months). FCMT and acupuncture may help patients with sequelae of facial palsy.
