In this study, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) environment was established using MATLAB/Simulink to simulate and verify the power performance of a wind turbine. The target wind turbine was selected as the NREL 5 MW model, and modeling was performed based on the disclosed specifications. The HILS environment consists of a PC equipped with a MATLAB/Simulink program, a programmable logic controller (PLC) for uploading and linking control algorithms, and data acquisition (DAQ) equipment to manage wind turbine data input and output. The operation of the HILS environment was carried out as a procedure of operation (PC) of the target wind turbine modeled based on MATLAB/Simulink, data acquisition (PLC) of control algorithms, control command calculation (PLC), and control command input (PC). The simulation was performed using the HILS environment under turbulent wind conditions and compared with the simulation results performed under the same conditions in the HILS environment using the commercial program Bladed for performance verification. From the comparison, it was found that the dynamic simulation results of the Bladed HILS and the MATLAB HILS were close in power performances and the errors in the average values of rotor rotation speed and power generation between the two simulations were about 0.44 % and 3.3 %, respectively.

This research describes on airfoil shape design, crucial to core technique and algorithm optimization for the wind turbine blade development. We grasped the parameter to define the airfoil shape in the wind turbine blade and aircraft, and the important performance characteristic of the airfoil. The airfoil shape function is selected by studying which is suitable for wind turbine blade airfoil development. The selected method is verified by to compare the generated airfoil shape with base airfoil. The new airfoils were created by the selecting shape function based on the well-known airfoil for wind turbine blades. In addition, we performed aerodynamic analysis about the generated airfoils by XFOIL and estimated the point of difference in the airfoil shape parameter using the aerodynamic performance results which is compared with basic airfoil. This result data applies to the fundamental research for a wind turbine blade optimization design and accomplished the aerodynamic analysis manual.

This paper summarizes the experimentally-measured performance of small-scale, vertical-axis wind turbine for the purpose of improving the aerodynamic efficiency and its controllability. The turbine is designed to have a Savonius-Type rotor with an inlet guide-vane and an side guide-vane so that it achieves a higher efficiency than any lift- or drag-based turbines. The main design factors for this high-efficient, vertical wind turbine are the number of blades (Z), and the aspect ratio of Height/Diameter (H/D) among many. The basic model has the diameter of 580mm, the height of 464mm, and the blade number of 10. The maximum power coefficient of 0.50 was experimentally measured for the above-mentioned specifications. The inlet-guide vane ensures the maximum efficiency when the angle of attack to the rotor blade lies between $15^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$. This experimental results for the vertical-axis wind turbine can be applied to the preliminary design of turbine output curve based on the wind characteristics at the proposed site by controlling its aerodynamic performance given as a priori.

In this paper, the aerodynamic design process of wind turbine blades is established. The optimization design strategy is presented and the constraints that must be reviewed during the aerodynamic design process are summarized. Based on this, this study developed a BEMT-based aerodynamic optimal design program that can be applied easily to actual work, not only for research purposes, but also can be integrated from the initial concept design stage to the final 3D shape detail design stage. The developed program AeroDA consisted of a concept design module, basic design module, optimal TSR module, local shape optimization module, performance analysis module, design verification module, and 3D shape generation module. Using the developed program, an improved design of the 5MW blade by NREL was made, and it was confirmed that this program could be used for design optimization. In addition, a 10kW blade aerodynamic design and turbine detailed performance analysis were carried out, and it was verified by a comparison with the commercial program DNVGL Bladed.
This study focuses on an advanced second-order sliding mode control strategy for a variable speed wind turbine based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator to maximize wind power extraction while simultaneously reducing the mechanical stress effect. The control design based on a modified version of the super-twisting algorithm with variable gains can be applied to the cascaded system scheme comprising the current control loop and speed control loop. The proposed control inheriting the well-known robustness of the sliding technique successfully deals with the problems of essential nonlinearity of wind turbine systems, the effects of disturbance regarding variation on the parameters, and the random nature of wind speed. In addition, the advantages of the adaptive gains and the smoothness of the control action strongly reduce the chatter signals of wind turbine systems. Finally, with comparison with the traditional super-twisting algorithm, the performance of the system is verified through simulation results under wind speed turbulence and parameter variations.
A program to design a small capacity wind turbine blade is proposed in this study. The program is based on a matlab GUI environment and designed to perform blade design based on the blade element momentum theory. The program is different from other simulation tools available in a point that it can analyze the side-furling power regulation mechanism and also has an algorithm to find out optimal torque schedule above the rated wind speed region. The side-furling power regulation is used for small-capacity horizontal axis wind turbines because they cannot use active pitch control due to high cost which is commonly used for large-capacity wind turbine. Also, the torque schedule above the rated wind speed region should be different from that of the large capacity wind turbines because active pitching is not used. The program developed in this study was validated with the results with FAST which is the only program that can analyze the performance of side-furled wind turbines. For the validation a commercial 10 kW wind turbine data which is available in the literature was used. From the validation, it was found that the performance prediction from the proposed simple program is close to those from FAST. It was also found that the optimal torque scheduling from the proposed program was found to increase the turbine power substantially. Further experimental validation will be performed as a future work.
The wind design of buildings is typically based on strength provisions under ultimate loads. This is unlike the ductility-based approach used in seismic design, which allows inelastic actions to take place in the structure under extreme seismic events. This research investigates the application of a similar concept in wind engineering. In seismic design, the elastic forces resulting from an extreme event of high return period are reduced by a load reduction factor chosen by the designer and accordingly a certain ductility capacity needs to be achieved by the structure. Two reasons have triggered the investigation of this ductility-based concept under wind loads. Firstly, there is a trend in the design codes to increase the return period used in wind design approaching the large return period used in seismic design. Secondly, the structure always possesses a certain level of ductility that the wind design does not benefit from. Many technical issues arise when applying a ductility-based approach under wind loads. The use of reduced design loads will lead to the design of a more flexible structure with larger natural periods. While this might be beneficial for seismic response, it is not necessarily the case for the wind response, where increasing the flexibility is expected to increase the fluctuating response. This particular issue is examined by considering a case study of a sixty-five-story high-rise building previously tested at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario using a pressure model. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed for the building. The wind pressures from the tested rigid model are applied to the finite element model and a time history dynamic analysis is conducted. The time history variation of the straining actions on various structure elements of the building are evaluated and decomposed into mean, background and fluctuating components. A reduction factor is applied to the fluctuating components and a modified time history response of the straining actions is calculated. The building components are redesigned under this set of reduced straining actions and its fundamental period is then evaluated. A new set of loads is calculated based on the modified period and is compared to the set of loads associated with the original structure. This is followed by non-linear static pushover analysis conducted individually on each shear wall module after redesigning these walls. The ductility demand of shear walls with reduced cross sections is assessed to justify the application of the load reduction factor "R".
The effectiveness of conventional tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) in controlling the wind-induced response of tall flexible structures has been indicated. However, the impaired control effect in the detuning condition or a considerably high mass cost of liquid may be incurred in ensuring the high-level serviceability. To provide an efficient TLD-based solution for wind-induced vibration control, this study proposes a serviceability-oriented optimal design method for isolated TLDs (ILDs) and derives analytical design formulae. The ILD is implemented by mounting the TLD on the linear isolators. Stochastic response analysis is performed for the ILD-equipped structure subjected to stochastic wind and white noise, and the results are considered to derive the closed-form responses. Correspondingly, an extensive parametric analysis is conducted to clarify a serviceability-oriented optimal design framework by incorporating the comfort demand. The obtained results show that the high-level serviceability demand can be satisfied by the ILD based on the proposed optimal design framework. Analytical design formulae can be preliminarily adopted to ensure the target serviceability demand while enhancing the structural displacement performance to increase the safety level. Compared with conventional TLD systems, the ILD exhibits higher effectiveness and a larger frequency bandwidth for wind-induced vibration control at a small mass ratio.
Despite that the failure of sign structure may not have disastrous consequence, its sheer number still ensures the need for rigorous safety standard to regulate their maintenance and construction. During its service life, a sign structure is subject to extensive wind load, sometimes well over its permissible design load. A fragility analysis of a sign structure offers a tool for rational decision making and safety evaluation by using a probabilistic framework to consider the various sources of uncertainty that affect its performance. Wind fragility analysis was used to determine the performance of sign structure based on the performance of its connection components. In this study, basic wind fragility concepts and data required to support the fragility analysis of the sign structure such as sign panel's parameters, connection component's parameters, as well as wind load parameters were presented. Fragility and compound fragility analysis showed disparity between connection component. Additionally, reinforcement of the connection system was introduced as an example of the utilization of wind fragility results in the retrofit decision making.

As a regenerated turbulent wind field process, wind tunnel test has proven to be a promising approach for investigating the transmission tower-line system (TTLS) performance in view of experimental scaled models design, simulation techniques of wind field, and wind induced responses subjected to typhoon. However, the challenges still remain in using various wind tunnels to regenerate turbulent wind field with considerable progress having been made in recent years. This review paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of the wind tunnel based on active or passive controlled simulation techniques. Specific attention and critical assessment have been given to: (a) the design of experimental scaled models, (b) the simulation techniques of wind field, and (c) the responses of TTLS subjected to typhoon in wind tunnel. This review concludes with the research challenges and recommendations for future research direction.
