  • Performance characteristics of the planar-type solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) are investigated by the analysis of flow fields coupled with heat and mass transfer phenomena in anode and cathode channels. For these purposes, performance analysis of the SOFC is conducted based on electrochemical reaction phenomena in electrodes and electrolyte coupled with flow fields in anode and cathode channels. In the present study, the isothermal model adopted in the previous paper prepared by the same authors is extended to the non-isothermal model by solving energy equation additionally with momentum and mass transfer equations using CFD technique. It is found that the difference between isothermal and non-isothermal models come from non-uniform temperature distribution along anode and cathode electrodes by solving energy equation in non-isothermal model. Non-uniform temperature distribution in non-isothermal model contributes to the increase of average temperature of the fuel cell and influences its performance characteristics.

  • Heat transfer performance are studied for the turbulent flow of water in 3 smooth tube coils having ratios of coil to tube diameter of 16, 21 and 27, and a corrugated-coiled tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 29, for Reynolds numbers from 8000 to 60000 and is also compared with the limited results available to data. The experiments are carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils under the condition of uniform heat flux. This work is limited 0 tube coils of R/a between 10 and 30. The tube having a ratio of coil to tube diameter of 27 among the 3 smooth tube coils shows the best heat transfer performance. The performance of coiled tube best transfer performance. The performance of coiled tube with a similar curvature ratio is better for a corrugated-coiled tube(R/a=17) than for a smooth coiled tube(R/a=16). An empirical relation which correlates most of the data within $\pm$25% was also developed. Test result shows that the Nusselt number is found to be affected by a secondary flow due to curvature.

  • In this paper, we investigate the properties and performance of space-time bit-interleaved coded modulation (STBICM) systems in fast Rayleigh fading channels. We first show that ST-BICM with QPSK signaling in fast fading channels possesses the uniform distance property, which makes performance analysis tractable. We also derive the probability distribution of the squared Euclidean distance between space-time symbols assuming uniform bit-interleaving. Based on the distribution, we show that the diversity order for each codeword pair becomes maximized as the frame length becomes sufficiently long. This maximum diversity order property implies that the bit-interleaver transforms an ST-BICM system over transmit diversity channels into an equivalent coded BPSK system over independent fading channels. We analyze the performance of ST-BICM in fast fading channels by deriving an FER upper bound. The derived bound turns out very accurate, requiring only the distance spectrum of the binary channel codes of ST-BICM. Numerical results demonstrate that the bound is tight enough to render an accurate estimate of performance of ST-BICM systems.

  • In this paper, we investigate the achievable sum rate and energy efficiency of downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output antenna systems with zero-forcing precoding, by taking into account the randomness of user locations. Specifically, we propose two types of non-uniform user distributions, namely, center-intensive user distribution and edge-intensive user distribution. Based on these user distributions, we derive novel tight lower and upper bounds on the average sum rate. In addition, the impact of user distributions on the optimal number of users maximizing the sum rate is characterized. Moreover, by adopting a realistic power consumption model which accounts for the transmit power, circuit power and signal processing power, the energy efficiency of the system is studied. In particular, closed-form solutions for the key system parameters, such as the number of antennas and the optimal transmit signal-to-noise ratio maximizing the energy efficiency, are obtained. The findings of the paper suggest that user distribution has a significant impact on the system performance: for instance, the highest average sum rate is achieved with the center-intensive user distribution, while the lowest average sum rate is obtained with the edge-intensive user distribution. Also, more users can be served with the center-intensive user distribution.

  • In this work we propose a compression technique that makes use of linear and perceptually uniform CIE $La^*b^*$ color space in the JPEG image compression framework to improve its performance at lower bitrates. To generate quantization matrices suitable for the linear and perceptually uniform CIE $La^*b^*$ color space, a novel linear Contrast Sensitivity Function (CSF) is used. The compression performance in terms of Compression Ratio (CR) and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), is further improved by utilizing image dependent, variable and non-uniform image sub-blocks generated using a proposed histogram-based merging technique. Experimental results indicate that the proposed linear CSF based quantization technique yields, on an average, 8% increase in CR for the same reconstructed image quality in terms of PSNR as compared to the conventional YCbCr color space. The proposed scheme also outperforms JPEG in terms of CR by an average of 45.01% for the same reconstructed image quality.

  • In genetic algorithms(GA), a crossover is performed only at one or two places of a chromosome, and the fixed probabilities of crossover and mutation have been used during the entire generation. A GA with dynamic mutation is known to be superior to GAs with static mutation in performance, but so far no efficient dynamic mutation method has been presented. Accordingly in this paper, a GA is proposed to perform a uniform crossover based on the nucleotide(NU) concept, where DNA and RNA consist of NUs and also a concrete way to vary the probabilities of crossover and mutation dynamically for every generation is proposed. The efficacy of the proposed GA is demonstrated by its application to the unimodal, multimodal and nonlinear control problems, respectively. Simulation results show that in the convergence speed to the optimal value, the proposed GA was superior to existing ones, and the performance of GAs with varying probabilities of the crossover and the mutation improved as compared to GAs with fixed probabilities of the crossover and mutation. And it also shows that the NUs function as the building blocks and so the improvement of the proposed algorithm is supported by the building block hypothesis.

  • Numerical analyses have been performed to obtain the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients and the absorption mass flux from a falling film of LiBr solution. In the present study, the behavior of laminar-wavy falling film in the vertical absorber was studied analytically and experimentally. The change of absorption performance on mean film thickness, wave amplitude, wave celerity was analysed. The heat and mass transfer equations are solved simultaneously to give the temperature and concentration variations at the LiBr solution/refrigeration vapor interface and at the wall. Effects of uniform film, wavy film and film Reynolds number on the heat and mass transfer coefficients have been estimated. The analytical results of the uniform and wavy falling film in the bare tube was higher than experimental result for $Rd_{t}<100$. The absorption performance showed the maximum at the wavy film by the insert device(spring).

  • The real time scheduling is a key research area in high performance computing and has been a source of challenging problems. A periodic task is an infinite sequence of task instance where each job of a task comes in a regular period. The RMS (Rate Monotonic Scheduling) algorithm has the advantage of a strong theoretical foundation and holds out the promise of reducing the need for exhaustive testing of the scheduling. Many real-time systems built in the past based their scheduling on the Cyclic Executive Model because it produces predictable schedules which facilitate exhaustive testing. In this work we propose hybrid scheduling method which combines features of both of these scheduling algorithms. The original rate monotonic scheduling algorithm didn't consider the uniform sampling tasks in the real time systems. We have enumerated some issues when the RMS is applied to our hybrid scheduling method. We found the scheduling bound for the hard real-time systems which include the uniform sampling tasks. The suggested hybrid scheduling algorithm turns out to have some advantages from the point of view of the real time system designer, and is particularly useful in the context of large critical systems. Our algorithm can be useful for real time system designer who must guarantee the hard real time tasks.

  • In this paper, a symmetric microwave lens to steer wide angle and to operate at broad band frequency range for a linear phased array transmitter was designed. To get accurate beam steering performance far a linear phased array transmitter, uniform amplitude transmission characteristics of microwave lens was focused. The measured result for the insertion loss deviation between Input and output ports of microstrip lens with 8 beam ports and 8 array ports was $\pm$3.1 ㏈ over 6~18 ㎓ band, which was very uniform characteristics. Using 8 elements linear array antenna, it was confirmed the radiation beam could be steered over $\pm$60$^{\circ}$ in azimuth. And the measured lens performance data and multi-beam steering pattern were presented.

  • The performance and durability of Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are strongly influenced by the uniformity of current density, temperature, species distributions inside a cell In order to obtain uniform distributions in them, the optimal design of flowfield must be a key factor. In this paper, the numerical study of land/channel flowfield optimizations is performed, using a multi-dimensional, multi-phase, non-isothermal PEFC model. Numerical simulations reveal more uniform current density and HFR(High Frequency Resistance) distributions and thus better PEFC performance with narrower land/channel width where the less severe oxygen depletion effect near the land region and more uniform contact resistance variation along the in-plane direction are achieved. The present study elucidates detailed effects of land/channel width and assist in identifying optimal flow-field design strategies for the operation of PEFCs.
