  • An experimental study on the performance enhancement of a screw-compressor-type chiller with 100kW of nominal cooling capacity has been carried out. Performance test facility was developed to investigate the effects of a partial modification from the existing chiller on the performance. By replacing the existing shell-and -tube heat exchangers with plate heat exchangers, the cooling capacity is increased by 15~18% and the COP is also increased by 19~21% depending on the operation temperature range. Charging mixed refrigerant R22/R142b(80 : 20) instead of R22 into the chiller with plate heat exchangers improves the cooling capacity by 4% and the COP very largely by 30%. Each contribution of the plate evaporator, plate condenser, and mixed refrigerant to the performance enhancement is examined by analyzing the refrigeration cycle and the heat transfer processes. It is also shown that the chiller performance can be improved by adapting 2-stage-compression cycle using an economizer.

  • This article investigates the impacts of firms' regulatory compliance and voluntary innovation activities in environmental management on the development of their organizational capabilities and the enhancement of their performance, within the Korean context. The study invokes a structural equation analysis. The results indicate that voluntary innovation activity in response to market pressures makes a significant contribution to the development of firm-specific organizational capability and the enhancement of firms' performance, but regulatory compliance activity does not significantly affect either organizational capability or performance. This capability was also seen to have implications for firm's performance. This article also suggests several policy implications related to the research.

  • This paper is discussed about the technology of the performance enhancement in the wireless communication between indoor and outdoor environments. In the outdoor wireless communication, the signal has mainly a severe degradation by the fading effect of channel, but that problem may be overcome by using ordinary multiple antenna technology and array signal processing algorithm. Hence, since the channel has the characteristics of both fading and angle spread in the wireless communication between indoor and outdoor, the ordinary technology cannot solve the signal degradation due to the angle spread. In order to solve the problem, in this paper, the characteristic of the wireless channel between indoor and outdoor is first analyzed and considered the channel models fit to that case. We propose the new multiple antenna algorithm by use of mean steering vector concept, and obtained the results of the performance enhancement. With the results of the performance analyses through of the numerical study and computer simulation, we show that the proposed algorithm has more enhanced signal to noise ratio than the previous algorithm.

  • Secure operation of hospitals during and right after earthquake is essential. Past lessons from earthquake damages have shown that most of the injured and the death occurred within 30 minutes after earthquake and the portion of nonstructural damage has become significant. However, hospital buildings in Korea have not prepared fully to address such rising issues. This paper is to study what type of damage patterns are related to hospital buildings and how to develop a preparedness plan to keep hospitals operational at all earthquakes if possible. This paper first reviews on past earthquake damages reported as critical to hospital buildings while classifying them into four groups: (1) structural element; (2) architectural-nostructural element; (3) medical equipments and contents; and (4) utility facility. Upon such classification, some detailed concerns can be specified under each group explicitly. Then a hierarchy for hospital building is also developed for the classified groups, which enables us to identify required things for the enhancement of seismic performance of hospital building that consists of heterogeneous elements. To upgrade the level of seismic performance for existing hospital buildings, the concept of performance-based approach can be adopted to address the heterogeneous problems in a systematic and stepwise manner. Finally a conceptual framework for the seismic risk assessment for hospital building is proposed toward the seismic enhancement of hospital buildings using performance-based approach.

  • This paper evaluates and compares the performance of the Deep Nerual Network (DNN)-based speech enhancement models according to various loss functions. We used a complex network that can consider the phase information of speech as a baseline model. As the loss function, we consider two types of basic loss functions; the Mean Squared Error (MSE) and the Scale-Invariant Source-to-Noise Ratio (SI-SNR), and two types of perceptual-based loss functions, including the Perceptual Metric for Speech Quality Evaluation (PMSQE) and the Log Mel Spectra (LMS). The performance comparison was performed through objective evaluation and listening tests with outputs obtained using various combinations of the loss functions. Test results show that when a perceptual-based loss function was combined with MSE or SI-SNR, the overall performance is improved, and the perceptual-based loss functions, even exhibiting lower objective scores showed better performance in the listening test.
