Emotional Leadership, Leader Legitimacy, and Work Engagement in Retail Distribution Industry

  • Purpose: The study examines how emotional leadership affects employee attitude towards work engagement. Leader legitimacy perception is chosen as the mediating variable to understand the effect of emotional leadership on employee work engagement. Research design, data and methodology: The research model is based on theory and empirical research findings in order to examine the mediating effect of leader legitimacy perception on the relationship between the manager's emotional leadership and employee work engagement. For this purpose, a survey was conducted among 188 employees of domestic retail distributors. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and survey data confirmed the construct, and the hypothesis was tested by using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results: a) Emotional leadership has positive influence on leader legitimacy; b) Leader legitimacy is positively related to work engagement; c) Leader legitimacy mediates a positive relationship between emotional leadership and work engagement. However, there is no direct effect on work engagement (of employees) from emotional leadership standpoint. Conclusion: Based on the empirical results, implications and future research directions are discussed.

  • This study identified the effects of history length and brand legitimacy succession on Brand Historicity (BH) in Fashion Brand Stories and Brand Attitude (BA) with Consumer Orientation (CO). The study conducted an experiment where participants were surveyed after reading a manipulated brand story composed of 2 kinds of brand historicity, brand establishment year (150 years, 70 years, and 20 years) and legitimacy succession (legitimacy succession and legitimacy handover). The results are as follow. First, the sub-dimensions of Brand Historicity appeared to be brand uniqueness, traditionality, symbolism, and managerial traits. Second, brand legitimacy succession types influenced the perceptions of BH with CO. Third, brand legitimacy succession types influenced the perceptions of BA1 (rational brand attitude) and BH1 (brand uniqueness), BH2 (brand traditionality) with CO, which were BA's sub-dimension. Forth, the consumer orientations that influenced BH and BA appeared to be nostalgia orientation, conspicuous consumption orientation, and fashion orientation; however, uniqueness pursuit orientations influenced only BH.

Government Legitimacy and International Image: Why Variations Occurred in China's Responses to COVID-19

  • This paper examines the Chinese government's response to four epidemic crises, including COVID-19, and analyzes the similarities and differences in these responses. It argues that while the Chinese government learned from previous epidemics and improved its handling of subsequent outbreaks, a significant variation occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a detrimental impact globally. Existing scholarly research on China's epidemic responses has often been limited in scope, focusing on individual crises and neglecting the central-local government relationship in crisis decision-making. By adopting a comprehensive approach, this paper delves into the nuanced dynamics of China's responses to these epidemics. It highlights the variations in responses, attributing them to the Chinese government's fear of undermined legitimacy and its consideration of its international image. The government's recognition of the importance of public perception and trust, both domestically and globally, has shaped its crisis management strategies. Through a detailed analysis of these factors, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the variations observed in China's epidemic responses. It emphasizes the significance of the central-local government relationship and the government's international image in determining its actions during epidemics. Recognizing these factors can provide policymakers and researchers with insights to shape future epidemic response strategies and foster effective global health governance.

CSV(공유가치창출)의 진정성이 정당성 지각을 통해 종업원 직무만족도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (Study on the Effect of CSV(Creating Shared Value) Authenticity on Employee's Job Satisfaction Mediated by the Perception of Legitimacy)

  • 본 연구는 CSV의 진정성이 사회공헌활동에 의해서 종업원의 직무만족도에 긍정적인 영향을 주는지와, 그 동안 CSV에 대한 연구에서 등한시 되던 조직 동일시를 조절변수로 하여 그 영향이 직무만족도에 긍정적으로 미치는가를 확인하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 이를 위하여 대기업에 재직 중인 회사원과 일부 중견기업 및 중소기업의 직원들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 연구를 위해서 도출된 사회공헌활동은 공익활동과 기업이익활동으로 분류하고, 그 기저에 내포되어 있는 사회공헌활동에 대한 종업원의 정당성 인지를 도덕적 정당성 지각과 실용적 정당성 지각으로 나누어서 4가지의 변인이 제시되었으며, 제시된 변인이 종업원 직무만족도에 긍정적 영향을 주는지와, 조절변구인 조직 동일시는 조절효과가 있는지를 검증해 보았다. 그 결과는 첫째, CSV의 진정성은 공익활동에 긍정적 영향을 주어서 종업원의 도덕적 정당성 지각에 정(+)의 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났으나, 종업원의 직무만족도에는 영향을 주지 않는 것으로 나타났으며, 이로 인하여 도덕적 정당성 지각과 직무만족도 사이의 조절효과를 검증할 수 없었다. 둘째, CSV의 진정성은 기업이익 활동에 긍정적 영향을 주어서 종업원의 실용적 정당성 지각에 정(+)의 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났으며, 이로 인하여 종업원의 직무만족에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 조절변수인 조직 동일시는 실용적정당성 지각과 직무만족도 사이에서 조절효과가 있는 것으로 검증되었다. 본 연구결과를 통해 공익활동에 의한 종업원 직무만족도 제고를 위해서는, 공익활동은 기업이 추구하는 전략적 목표라는 인식을 직원들에게 각인시켜줄 수 있는 기업문화의 정착이 필요하다는 것을 알 수 있다.

간섭권한과 패션감각이 남자친구의 패션스타일 통제에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Legitimacy and Fashionability on Females' Control over their Boyfriends' Fashion Style)

  • 사람들은 자신이 애정을 가지고 있는 중요 타인(예. 자녀, 배우자, 연인)을 또 다른 자기(extended self)라고 생각하고 자신의 자기 개념에 부합하는 방향으로 이들의 패션 스타일을 통제하려는 경향이 있다. 본 연구는 개념적으로 통제하려는 사람이 지각한 간섭권한 정도와 패션감각 수준이 중요 타인의 패션 스타일 통제 행동에 독립적 또는 상호작용의 영향을 미칠 것이라고 제안하였다. 이를 검증하기 위해서 연애 중인 20대 여성을 대상으로 시나리오를 이용한 실험을 진행했다. 연구 결과, 20대 여성 실험 참가자가 지각한 남자친구에 대한 간섭권한 정도와 패션감각 수준은 남자친구의 패션 스타일 통제 행동에 독립적으로 영향을 미치지 않았다. 반면 간섭권한 정도와 패션감각 수준의 지각은 남자친구의 패션 스타일 통제 행동에 상호작용 효과를 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 보다 구체적으로 지각한 간섭권한이 높은 경우는 패션감각 수준의 차이에 따른 남자친구의 패션 스타일 통제 행동의 차이가 없는 반면 지각한 간섭권한이 낮은 경우는 패션감각 수준을 높게 지각할수록 남자친구의 패션 스타일 통제를 더 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다.

기업 명성과 기업의 사회적 책임 활동의 동기와 적합성이 위기 시 기업 정당성 인식에 미치는 영향 - 삼성중공업 기름유출 사례를 중심으로 (A Study on the Effect of the Corporate Reputation, Perceived Motivation and Perceived Fit of Corporate Social Responsibility on the Recognition of Corporate Legitimacy in Crisis - Based on the Oil Spill Incidence of Samsung Heavy Industries)

  • 본 연구는 기업의 존폐가 갈리는 위기상황에서 기업이 필요한 것은 기업의 정당성이라 가정하고, 평상 시 기업의 명성 관리와 사회적 책임 활동 수행이 위기 시 기업의 정당성 확보에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 알아보기 위한 목적으로 이루어졌다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해서, 삼성중공업의 기름유출 사건과 이 위기를 극복하기 위해 삼성중공업이 발표한 지원대책을 분석사례로 선정하여 성인 320명을 대상으로 실험연구를 진행하였다. 이를 통해 첫째, 기업 명성이 기업의 정당성에 미치는 영향, 둘째, 기업의 사회적 책임 활동의 동기와 적합성이 기업 정당성에 미치는 영향, 그리고 기업 명성과 사회적 책임 활동에 대한 인식 간 상호작용이 기업 정당성에 미치는 영향을 밝히고자 했다. 연구 결과, 삼성중공업의 기업 명성은 위기 시 기업의 제도적 정당성에는 영향을 미치지 않지만 행동적 정당성 인식에 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 기업의 정당성에 사회적 책임 활동의 적합성은 영향을 미치는 반면, 사회적 책임 활동의 동기는 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 마지막으로, 변인 간 상호작용 효과를 살펴본 결과, 기업 명성과 사회적 책임 활동의 동기 간의 상호작용 효과는 나타나지 않았고, 명성과 사회적 책임 활동의 적합성 간 상호작용 효과는 유의한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 기업 명성, 사회적 책임 활동의 동기, 사회적 책임 활동의 책임성간의 관계를 살펴본 결과, 기업의 실용적 차원 정당성에 대한 3요인 간의 상호작용효과가 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 통해, 평소 명성 관리와 사회적 책임의 이행으로 공중의 요구를 충족시킨 기업의 경우 위기 상황에서도 기업 자체의 존재와 기업의 행동을 지지하고 인정하는 기업 정당성을 더 쉽게 부여받을 수 있다는 사실을 확인하였다. 즉, 기업이 위기 상황에서 기업 존재가치와 기업행위의 정당성을 확보하여 효과적으로 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 평소 꾸준한 명성 및 관계 관리와 적극적인 사회적 책임 이행이 중요하다는 것을 보여주었다.

기업의 사회적 책임 활동에 대한 정당성 인식이 종업원의 조직시민행동에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구: CEO의 비전적 리더십의 조절효과를 중심으로 (Effects of employees' perceptions of CSR legitimacy on their citizenship behaviors: The role of moderation by CEO's visionary leadership)

  • This study examines whether employees' legitimacy perceptions of corporate social responsibility (CSR) affect their organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). It also investigates whether CEO's visionary leadership can moderate this causal relationship. CSR legitimacy is defined in the current study as employees' personal beliefs about the appropriateness of corporate CSR activities. In fact, employees evaluate the appropriateness of CSR activity based on its consistency with corporate philosophy (e.g. corporate mission, vision, and values) which functions as employees' referencial belief structure. If CSR activity is perceived as one of firm's effort to fulfill its mission, vision, and values, which means that espoused theory and theory-in-use of CSR activity are congruent, employees will consider firm's CSR activity as legitimate. If, however, employees think that CSR activity is not congruent with firm's mission, vision, and values, which means that espoused theory and theory-in-use of CSR activity are inconsistent, they will perceive that CSR activity of their firm is not legitimate. In the current study, we propose that employees who perceive that the CSR activity of their firm is legitimate are more likely to engage in OCB. In addition, we hypothesize that CEO's visionary leadership can strengthen the positive effect of employees' perception of CSR legitimacy on their OCB. We tested these hypotheses with the sample of 383 employees from 32 companies listed on DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index) Korea 2009. We employed the HLM (hierarchical linear modeling) program to decompose the multi-level random effects. We found that CSR legitimacy perceptions of employees increase employees' OCB and that CEO's visionary leadership moderates this relationship. We discussed implications of these findings in more detail.

부모의 권위에 대한 아동의 지각 연구 (Children's Perception of Parental Authority)

  • This research examined children's perception of parental authority within three different types of rules : moral, social-conventional, and personal issue. Specifically, two major aspects of parental authority-legitimacy and obedience-were explored. The subjects of this study were 120 children from an elementary school in Kwangju. There were 40 subjects (20 males and 20 females) in each of three age groups: 7-, 9-, and 11- year-olds. The subjects were administered an interview individually. Based on Tisak (1986) open-ended questions concerning three family rules (moral rule, social-conventional rule, personal issue) were administered. Responses to the assessment questions were coded as positive or negative. Responses to the judgment conception questions were coded into 7 categories : Other's Walfare, Social Coordination, Personal choice, Deservedness of Punishment for Wrongdoing, Existence of Authority, Conflicting Personal Interest and Authority, and Personal Development. Statistical analysis of obtained data was by percentage and ${\chi}_2$ test using log linear procedure. The results were as follows : (1) There was a significant main effect of type of rule on the children's assessment regarding legitimacy and obedience of parental authority. The children (average 96%) stated that it was all right for parents to make rules prohiliting an act when it pertained to moral and social conventions. However, the majority of the children (average 40%) stated that it was not right for parents to regulate personal issues. (2) There was a significant interaction effect between type of rule and age. (3) There was a significant main effect of rules on the children's judgment conception of parental authority. (4) There was a significant interaction effect between rules and ages on children's judgment conception of parental authority.

조선시대 남성복식에 발현된 성리학적 몸 인식 (Perception of the Neo-Confucian body in men's dress during the Joseon Dynasty)

  • Comprehending the prevailing ideals of the body within a specific era requires grasping the intricate interplay between social phenomena and the evolution of clothing. Accordingly, this study investigates the distinctive facets of the perception of the Neo-Confucian body as reflected in men's dress during the Joseon Dynasty. We examine a comprehensive body of scholarship, literature, and historical records concerning the body and dress. Additionally, we also employ a framework developed by M. Y. Kim, which categorizes the Neo-Confucian body in three ways: as the natural body, the cultural body, and the body as a fully-realized moral subject. Our findings unveil three crucial insights: firstly, guided by Neo-Confucian discourse positing appearance as a manifestation of innate energy (氣), men's dress was deliberately designed to demarcate stylistic distinctions in women's dress; secondly, the Chinese gwan (冠) was employed as a tool of self-cultivation (修身) to symbolize the legitimacy of Joseon's Neo-Confucian governance; and thirdly, sim-ui (深衣), a philosophical emblem of Confucianism extensively represented across through an intensified exploration of historical sources, served as a means to consolidate the political standing of the Neo-Confucian faction. As a consequence of these factors, the attire of noble men conferred upon them both sexual and moral ascendancy as political entities; men's dress became a visual manifestation of the legitimacy of their power, thus embodying Neo-Confucian ideals. This study carries significance by applying a discourse analysis approach to Korean dress research and elucidating the factors underlying the development of men's dress during the Joseon Dynasty.

공공기관의 공공성 이행 검토: 의료분쟁조정중재원 사례를 중심으로 (The Publicness of Public Institutions: Case Study on the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency)

  • Background: Based on the fact that the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency is a public institution established by social demands for medical disputes, this study reviews the publicness of public organization and discusses its policy implications. Methods: Through Moore's strategic triangle, which consists of legitimacy and support, public value and operational capacity, the process of creating public value is examined. For the analysis, case studies were conducted using related literature data from 2012, when the agency was established, to the present. Results: As a result of the analysis, first, the related law examined in the operational capability has been revised dozens of times, but the revised law has its own contradictions and limitations. The human resource system is also being improved, but there is a problem with the fairness and reliability of the arbitration process, especially due to the limitations of the appraiser system. Second, in terms of legitimacy and support, a regional gap occurred despite efforts to improve accessibility through the expansion of the organization. And the arbitration agency failed to reconcile conflicts caused by stakeholders' perception of each other as a trade-off relationship. Third, the public value result shows that, despite many explicit (statistical) achievements, citizens' use of the past dispute resolution means (litigation) has not decreased. Likewise, the perception of value makers (citizens) is important for creating public value as an invisible result, but it has not yet been formally investigated, so the performance can not be recognized. Conclusion: While the organization's efforts for continuous change and improvement are encouraging, it is not perceived as a better means of resolving disputes and improving quality of services. Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider the institutional design centered on value creators.
