Purpose: The study has planned to find out the perceived social support of the families with pneumoconiosis patients. Method: The subjects of the study were the 300 family care givers of the pneumoconiosis patients who were hospitalized in Taeback, Donghae and Jeongsun Occupational Medical Center. The Social Support Survey Instrument developed by Park(1985) was adopted. Results: The Direct Perceived Supports showed statistically differences by the age(F=1.70 p=0.01) and the state of the disease(F=3.09 p=0.027) of the patients. The Health Situation Centered Support was different by the marietal situation(F=2.29 p=0.48) of the pneumoconiosis patients. The Indirect Perceived Supports were statistically different by sex(t=3.76 p=0.043) and relation with the patient (F=2.49 p=0.048), group joining(t=3.79 p=0.042) of the family care givers. The DPSs were statistically different by family income(F=2.25 p=0.025), family authority(F=2.81 p=0.031) and health insurance status(F=2.13 p=0.026). Recommendation: It is recommended to develop an active social support program at the pneumoconiosis care centers for the middle aged female family care givers of the pneumoconiosis patients with the support of Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Health and Welfare and other NGOs of pneumoconiosis.
The purpose of this study was to explore the influences of family resources, i.e. objective resources, perceived adequacy of resources, locus of control, social support, family cohesion, and family adaptability on caregiving stress for dementia elderly in homemakers. The subjects of this study were 141 married women who had cared for dementia elderly. The survey method was a questionnaire. And the data was analyzed by means of Cronbach's, factor analysis, and multiple regression. The main findings were as follows: First, Homemakers' caregiving stress was positively correlated to their academic background and monthly income, but negatively correlated to perceived adequacy of human resources, perceived adequacy of material resource, psychical support resource from relatives, and internal locus of control. Second, caregiving stress of homemakers was affected by family cohesion, monthly income, psychical support resource from relatives, perceived adequacy of human resources, and external locus of control.
This study was conducted to identify the relationship between the perceived family support and mental health of middle school students and provide basic data to develop a nursing program for prevention of mental disease and mental health promotion in adolescent. The subjects for this study were 427 students in their first, second and third year of two middle school in K city. The data were collected from December 12th to 19th, 2001. The instruments used for this study were the family support scale by Kang and the mental health assessment scale was the Symptom Check List-90-R. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, ANOVA, and Duncan test with SPSS program. The results were as follows: The mean score of the perceived family support was 42.26 and the mean score of mental health was 52.24. As a subarea of mental health was analyses, the scores of obsessive-compulsive reaction and hostility were respectively higher but the scores of phobia were lower than others. Family support was significantly different according to student's grade, religion and economic status, and educational level, the relationship between them, and living in parents. the characteristic influence on the level of mental health were sex, grade, and economic status of students and the relationship between them of parents. There was a significant correlation between the perceived family support and the level of mental health was revealed a significant correlation(r=-.35(P=0.001)). In conclusion, this study was found that family support was an important factor for promoting mental health of middle school students. In order to increase mental health of middle school students effectively, family support must be increased. Efforts to promote mental health of students are required in home and school. School authorities have to search a plans like "family support-class program" as one countermeasure to increase family support. teachers have to make educational programs to promote mental health constantly with participating parents.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the degree that perceived social support effects the self esteem of the elderly. Method: A structured questionnaire was administered to 203 elderly subjects from April 2003 to June 2003. The data were analyzed with an SPSS program for escriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The level of social support was moderate; family support received the highest score among sources of support. In types of support, appraisal support was the highest score and material was the lowest. The level of self esteem was also moderate. The score of social support showed a slightly high positive correlation with self esteem. In general characteristics, several variables were significantly related to self esteem. The most powerful predictor of self esteem was material support by family and the variance explained was 19.6%. A combination of material support by family, informational support by relatives, perceived economic status, perceived health status, and having a subject to depend on accounted for 39.8% of the variance in self esteem of the elderly. Conclusion: To increase the self esteem of the elderly, it is necessary to consolidate material support by family.
This study identified which aspects of perceived social support influence children's internalizing problems. The participants were 91 children from divorced families and 87 children from non-divorced families. They completed a questionnaire assessing the level of perceived social support and their teacher rated their internalizing problems(withdrawal, depression/anxiety) on K-CBCL scale. Sixth graders from non-divorced families perceived evaluative support higher than sixth graders from divorced families. In withdrawal, third graders from divorced families were rated higher than preschooler and sixth graders by their teacher. In depression/anxiety, third graders from divorced families were rated higher than sixth graders by their teacher. Internalizing problems of children from divorced families were affected by their perceived emotional support. Namely, children from divorced families who perceived less emotional support experienced more withdrawal and depression/anxiety.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct a structural equational model to explain and predict burnout in family caregivers of patients with cancer. The study was based on the Stress-Appraisal-Coping Model of Lazarus and Folkman (1984) and Family Stress Theory (Hill, 1958). Methods: Data were collected from July 10 to September 30, 2012 through direct interviews and a self -report questionnaire survey. Participants in this study were 206 family caregivers providing care for patients with cancer in In-patient or Out-patient departments of three different general hospitals located in Busan. Measured variables were exogenous variables (social support and perceived health status) and endogenous variables (perceived stress, hope and burnout). Results: Goodness of fit in the hypothetical model was ${\chi}^2=174.07$, TLI=.95, CFI=.97, RMSEA=.08. Perceived health status, perceived stress, and hope showed statistically significant direct effects on burnout of family caregivers. Social support affected burnout of family caregivers indirectly. These variables explained 68.5% of total variance in burnout. Conclusion: The results from this study suggest that perceived stress, perceived health status, and hope should be considered as major influential factors when developing nursing interventions to control burnout of family caregivers (of patients with cancer).
The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of family support on hope of the patients with stroke. Subjects were 53 in-patients with stroke in two general hospitals and one oriental medicine hospital located in Seoul and Kwang-Ju. The instruments used for this study : The family support scale developed by Kang Hyun Suk(1985). The hope scale developed by Nowotny(1989). The Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA. Pearson's correlation and simple regression. Data had been collected from December 24, 1998 to January 31, 1999. The results of this study were as follows The mean score of family support was 43.94 and the mean score of the hope was 80.89. The relationship between family support and the hope of the patients with stroke revealed a significant correlation (r= .560, p= .0001). The variables influencing family support and the hope of the patients with stroke were as follows : There was significant difference between family support and general characteristic factor, which was family chief caregiver (p= .002). There was no significant difference between hope and general characteristic factors. but There were significant differences between one of the subscales of hope, 'confidence in the outcome' and general characteristic factors, which were age(p= .021), perceived disability effect(p= .027). There were significant differences between one of the subscales of hope 'possibility of future', and general characteristic factors, which were age(p= .016), education(p= .018). There was significant difference between one of the subscales of hope. 'spiritual belief', and general characteristic factors, which was religion(p= .002). There was significant difference between one of the subscales of hope, 'active involvement', and general characteristic factors, which was family chief caregiver (p= .012). It was found that the higher the degree of perceived family support, the higher the degree of hope. Clearly, the perceived family support can contribute significantly and positively to hope of the patients with stroke. Therefore, nurses should plan interventions to inspire hope level of patients with stroke by family support. The above results may be used as the basic data to seek more efficient way of elevating nursing practice and qualify for the patients with stroke.
This study investigates the work-family interactions of married men, the variables affecting these interactions, and the differences between the variables affecting work-family conflict and those affecting work-family enhancement. The subjects of this study were 1,249 married men. The major findings are as follows. First, married men perceived moderate levels of work-family conflict and work-family enhancement both from work to family and from family to work. Second, the level of work-family conflict was higher than that of family-work conflict, and the level of family-work enhancement was higher than that of work-family enhancement. Third, work-family conflict was influenced by external occupational rewards, the relative importance of work and family life, a family-friendly work environment, perceived working hours, and spousal support. The variables that have an effect on work-family enhancement are perceived working hours, a family-friendly work environment, the relative importance of work and family life, and spousal support. Fourth, family-work conflict is influenced by age, spousal support, perceived family-work enhancement are spousal support, seeking internal and external occupational rewards, the relative importance of work and family life, and a family-friendly work environment. Finally, the variables that affect work-family conflict and those affecting work-family enhancement are similar, but the variables affecting family-work conflict and those affecting family-work enhancement are very different.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to identify levels of parenting stress, depression and family support of immigrant women and to investigate the moderating effect of family support on the relationship between parenting stress and depression of immigrant women. Methods: The research was carried out with 86 immigrant women who were registered in multi-cultural support centers and receiving education in three cities South Jeolla Province. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: The level of parenting stress perceived by the immigrant women was moderate and the level of depression was slightly high. The level of family support as perceived by the wives was slightly high as well. There was a positive correlation between depression and parenting stress but no correlation with family support. Effects of parenting stress on depression were moderated by family support. Conclusion: Results indicate that family support provided to immigrant women moderated effects of parenting stress on depression. Accordingly, as family support is critical to immigrant women, education and other programs need to be provided to promote understanding of family support as a help for immigrant women.
This study examined different individual, family factors and classroom environment that affect children's perceived competency. For an analysis, achievement motivation, intrinsic locus of control and anxiety were included in individual variables. For family factors, parental support and marital conflict were examined. For classroom psycho-social environment, teacher support, peer relations, classroom involvement and teacher control were used. The sample consisted of 565 fifth and sixth grade children. Statistics and methods used for the data analysis were Cronbach's alpha, Factor analysis, frequency, percentage, t-test, Pearson's correlation, and Hierarchical Regression. Several major results were found from the analysis. First, boy's perceived academic competency was higher than girl's. And no sex difference was in children's social and athletic competency. Second, boy's and girl's perceived academic and social competency and boy's perceived athletic competency had a positive correlation with achievement motivation, intrinsic locus of control, parental support, teacher support, peer relations and classroom involvement. And girl's perceived athletic competency had a positive correlation with achievement motivation, intrinsic locus of control, parental support and peer relations. But boy's and girl's perceived academic and social competency and boy's perceived athletic competency had a negative correlation with anxiety and parental marital conflict. Third, the most important variable predicting boy's and girl's perceived academic competency was achievement motivation. The most important variable predicting boy's and girl's perceived social competency was peer relations. And the most important variable predicting boy's perceived athletic competency was peer relations. On the other hand, the most important variable predicting girl's perceived athletic competency was father's support.
