The Present study attempted to analyze the fate of CO diffused into the circulating blood through the alveoli. Dogs were induced to CO poisoning by rebreathing CO gas mixture contained in Krog's spirometer, by closed circuit method, for 60 minutes. The spirometer was filled initially with 282 ml of CO and 20 liters of air and oxygen, so the composition of gases were arranged as 1.4% in CO and 50% in $O_2$ at the begining of the rebreathing. Oxygen was added corresponding to the utilization of $O_2$ by the animal in proceeding of the experiment. At 60th minutes of CO rebreathing, the concentration of CO in arterial blood and in mixed venous blood were analysed and compared with each other after the CO contents were corrected with the hematocrit measured in the arterial and mixed venous blood. The distribution of CO gas to other tissues was estimated by the analysis of CO diffused into the cystic bile and into the peritoneal gas pocket which was formed by injection of 300 ml air into the peritoneal cavity prior to the CO gas rebreathing. The blood volume was measured by dilution method using $^{51}Chromium$ tagged red cells. CO amount vanished in the animal body was calculated by subtraction of total CO content in blood stream and the CO remained in closed circuit breathing system from the CO amount given to the breathing system at the begining of the experiment. Results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The content of CO corrected by the hematocrit value was slightly less in mixed venous blood than in arterial blood. The amount of CO diffused into the cystic bile and into the peritoneal cavity was averaged to 0.1% and 0.4% of the CO amount in 100 ml of blood, respectively. 2. For 60 minutes of CO rebreathing, CO-hemoglobin saturation reached about 77% at the 60th minutes, CO amount vanished in the experimental animal averaged 36.1 ml/dog/hr., or 21% of the total CO volume in the blood stream. The average vanishing rate of CO during 60 minutes of CO rebreathing per kg of body weight was 2.71 ml/hr. Production of CO measured in ten dogs under hypoxic condition averaged 0.023 ml/kg/hr. The major part of the CO vanished in the dogs seemed to be oxidized to $CO_2$ by various tissues of the animal. The conclusion might be delivered as such oxidation of CO to $CO_2$ by animal tissues can play a role in part of the process of recovery and protection of animal from CO-poisoning.
Although canine facial nerve paralysis(FNP) occurs similarly in humans, there is no properly recognized therapy using Western medicine for idiopathic causes. To elucidate therapeutic measures by acupuncture(AP) on canine FNP, we examined the therapeutic effect of injection-AP on the artificially induced canine FNP. Twelve dogs on artificially induced canine FNP were divided into a control group(4 dogs), an experimental dexamethasone-treated group(dexamethasone group, 4 dogs) and an experimental bee venom-treated group(apitoxin group, 4 dogs). Saline (1 ml) was intramuscularly injected into the head muscle after the induction of FNP in the control group. On the other hand, injection-AP with dexamethasone was performed on such acupoints as LI04, LI20, ST02, ST07, TH17, SI18, GB03 and GB34, twice per week after induction of FNP in the dexamethasone group. In addition, injection-AP with $100{\mu}g$ of apitoxin was performed on the same acupoints as the dexamethasone group twice per week after the induction of FNP in the apitoxin group, respectively. The changes of the clinical symptoms of FNP with each treatment during the experimental period were recorded by using clinical scores, respectively. The changes of serum creatine kinase(CK) activities along with each treatment were determined using an autoanalyzer. The significant differences of clinical scores were detected on day 14(p<0.05) in the apitoxin and dexamethasone groups, compared with those in the control group, respectively. However, significant difference was not detected between the apitoxin and dexamethasone groups. Significant differences of serum CK activities were detected on day 7(p<0.05) and day 14(p<0.05) in the dexamethasone and apitoxin groups, compared with those in the control group, respectively. However, significant difference was not detected between the dexamethasone and apitoxin groups. In condition, injection-APs with apitoxin and dexamethasone were all effective for treatment of canine FNP and the therapeutic effect by injection-AP with apitoxin was similar to that of injection-AP with dexamethasone.
To determine the test conditions to enhance the use of hamster test in dogs, semen were collected from four dogs which had been proven to be fertile in the past and then preserved in BWW (Biggers, Whitten, Whittingham) medium for about 20 hours. The semen were given each different treatment according to the experimental design and coincubated with zona-free hamster ova for 5 hours. The ova were stained by lacmoid and examined under phase contrast microscope to investigate the rates of ova bound with sperm(sperm binding) and ova penetrated by sperm (penetration), and also numbers of both bound and penetrated sperm per ovum. In comparison of different concentrations of canine sperm, the rate of sperm binding was higher in $1.5{\times}10^8$, $1{\times}10^8$, and $5{\times}10^7$ sperm concentrations than $5{\times}10^5$ concentration(p<0.01), and also than $5{\times}10^6$ concentration(p<0.05), respectively. The number of bound sperm per ovum was considerably higher in $1.5{\times}10^8$ sperm concentration than $5{\times}10^7$, $1.5{\times}10^6$, and $5{\times}10^5$ concentrations(p<0.01). The rate of penetration was considerably higher in $1.5{\times}10^8$ and $1{\times}10^8$ sperm concentrations than $5{\times}10^5$ concentration,(p<0.01), and also the higher result of penetration was shown in $5{\times}10^7$ than $5{\times}10^5$ (p<0.05). The number of penetrated sperm per ovum was considerably higher in $1.5{\times}10^8$ sperm concentrations than $5{\times}10^5$(p<0.01), and also the higher number was shown in $1{\times}10^8$ than $5{\times}10^5$ (p<0.05). In comparison of the different preincubation period of canine spermatozoa, no difference was obtained in the results of hamster test among the preincubation periods of 4 hours, 18~24 hours and 48 hours. The canine spermatozoa in BWW medium with $Ca^{2+}$(1.3mM) and without FCS(fetal calf serum), with both $Ca^{2+}$(1.3mM) and FCS, with $Ca^{2+}$(2.6mM) and without FCS, and with both $Ca^{2+}$(2.6mM) and FCS showed no difference in the results of hamster test. These results indicated that the appropriate concentration of sperm should be given in hamster test for dog sperm.
Mast cell distribution was quantified in acidified toluidine blue sections of normal skin from 8 different sites in 10 dogs and compared to the predilection sites of canine atopic dermatitis. Mast cell counts varied significantly from site to site (p<0.0001) and counts in the superficial dennis were significantly higher than the deeper dennis (p<0.05). The highest mast cells distribution sites were the concave surface of the ear (mean $74.88{\pm}17.93\;per\;mm^{2}$) and the interdigital skin of the forefeet (mean $28.326{\pm}6.24\;per\;mm^{2}$). Counts in these sites were $280\%$ higher than all the other sites. Our results may provide some evidence that cutaneous mast cell distribution may be a factor in the frequent occurrence of ear and foot pruritus in atopic dermatitis. However, the low mast cell count in the predilection sites of atopic dermatitis did not explain the common occurrence of atopic lesions. Therefore, other factors or more complicated pathogenesis may be correlated with these predilection sites.
This study eas conducted to assess the spectrographic analysis agter vocal cordectomy in which procedures included biopsy punch per os, laryngofissure and lactic acid injection to the vocal cord. There were significant difference in dominant frequency(DF) of spectrograms between normal and all surgical procedures for vocal cordectomy at 1 day (p<0.01). Vocal cordectomy(laryngofissure) revealed significant differences in minimum frequency of call (MIFC) and DF during the period of observation after surgery (p<0.01). In lactic acid injextion group, there were also significant differences in DF and maximum frequency of call (MAFC) variables (p<0.01).
The diagnosis of canine diabetes mellitus is generally made by measuring serum fructosamine levels. The Rosental's end points Tas and El Din's kinetic, and Johnson and colleagues'kinetic techiniques were compared for the measuring serum fructosamine levels. In the Rosental's end point methods within-run and between-run coefficient of variability (CV) were 2.4-3.5% and 6.8-8.5%, respectively, and in the Tas and El Din's kinetic method, within-run and between-run CV were 1.3-3.0% and 3.4-3.9%, respectively. In the Johnson and colleagues'kinetic methods within-run and between-run CV were 0-1.8% and 3.1-6.8%1 ruts- pectively. Hyperlipidemia induced by oral administration of 3 ml of corn oil per kilogram body weight did not affect serum fructosamine concentration significantly in the Johnson and colleagues' kinetic method Johnson and colleagues'kinetic method is most reliable and consistant on the basis of comparison study.
These studies were preformed to investigate the freezing conditions to achieve good post-thaw viability of spend and the practical methods of artificial insemination frozen canine semen. Semen were collected from nine male dogs which had been proved to be fertile in the past and the semen were treated for freezing procedure. Post-thaw motility and viability of canine sperm were evaluated to investigate individual tolerance of freezing, difference among freezing extenders, dif-ference among freezing equipments and freezing conditions, difference between fast and slow cooling rate, difference according to different glycerol concentration, effect of seeding on post-thaw viability, difference according to cutting part of straw, difference according to thawing temperatures, and dif-ference according to media added to thawed semen. Thawed semen for insemination were added with equal volnme of canine capacitation medium (CCM) and the volume of semen and the number per insemination were adjusted as 2-3 ml and $20-30 {\times}10^7,$ respectively. The semen were inseminated in vagina using balloon catheter and en17ryos were cellected from 9 to 11 days after the second Al to d determine fertilization.

The purpose of this study was to find out the purchasing practices and consumer's needs for pet dog apparel to provide useful information for the manufacture of pet dog's apparel. Data were obtained from 203 consumers who have purchased dog apparel(55 male, 148 female). 57.9% of them were 20-30 years old, 27.9% were living in houses, 54.3% were apartment residents. The kinds of dog included were Shihtzu, Martise, and Yorkshireterrier, and 2/3 of the respondents own a single dog, the remainder have at least two dogs. The most important factor to consider when purchasing dog apparel was size, followed by comfort, design, and materials in that order, Most of the apparel was purchased with convenience as the primary consideration, and the average price was 10-30 thousands won, and the items were purchased at pet beauty shops or specialty shops. For materials, it showed that the majority preferred cotton or a cotton mixture which was woven or woven with knit. The survey revealed that the main purposes for the apparel were, in order, to protect the dog from cold weather and direct sunlight, to be good looks and to memorialize a special day. Consumers put the apparel on their dogs 1-3 times per week, on average, and also when they went out for a walk. They were satisfied with the design, color and quality of the material now on the market, but unsatisfied with size and price. They have a preference for cute, but simple designs and a functional style. The respondents wanted to have material that was mild or neutral, stain-resistant, and something that would repel insects.
A clinical trial was performed to assess clinical efficacy and/or reduction in relapses by gold-bead implantation into acupuncture points in dogs with canine chronic recurrent otitis externa (CCROE). Forty dog-patients randomly divided into two groups were diagnosed as suffering CCROE, having intact tympanic membranes and a history of recurrences. Treatments were: control group (CG), treated with commercially available antimicrobial otic droplets, dosed twice daily for 7 days; and experimental group (GBI- gold bead implants), treated as for CG plus the insertion of 13 gold-bead implants under light anesthesia. Overall per cent assessment of composite clinical progression and progression of individual clinical signs were recorded. Bilateral chronic external otitis was diagnosed in 60% of the cases and left or right otitis in 20% of the cases each. Logistic model for repeated measures analysis showed that GBI induced a better clinical recovery as far as lesion score of some clinical signs is concerned. The overall percent cures of each group showed statistically significant difference. A McNemar analysis revealed that higher number of relapses was observed in CG patients as compared to the GBI (P < 0.05). In particular during these days, lesion on the pinna showed in odd ratios analysis a 7:1 ratio (recurrence CG:GBI) and ear wax/pus (4:1) from D42 to D365. It is concluded that gold-bead implantation into acupuncture points improves resolution of some clinical signs and greatly reduce relapses in CCROE affected dogs after 1 year follow-up (98.75%).

The primary aim of this study is to estimate the home range of a pair of raccoon dogs(Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis) and to compare with the previous study of raccoon dogs in a rural area of Gurye, the southern part of South Korea. Radiotracking was regularly carried out on 2 raccoon dogs for 2 days every 2 months(in June, August, October and December, 2006). During the 2 days, radiotracking was usually conducted every $1{\sim}3$ hours through day and night. The analysis of tracking data with a total of $46{\sim}64$ bearings showed that the total home range size of the pair was $0.41km^2$, and mean home range size was $0.32km^2$ by 95% minimum convex polygons(MCP) estimate. The home ranges of the male and female were largely overlapping(about $70{\sim}95%$), and the sizes were not very much different from each other. However, there was a big difference between day $(0.01km^2)$ and night-time $(0.35km^2)$ home ranges, and it was largest in summer$(0.56km^2)$ and smallest in winter $(<0.01km^2)$. In addition, the home range of the pair included 1 core area and 4 different feeding areas. In conclusion, our raccoon dog home range data using the same individuals but with more frequent bearings per day and more extended tracking intervals still showed very similar results to the previous study with less frequent bearings per day and more extensive tracking days.
