Evaluation of solid surface properties by analysis of liquid penetration rate into powder bed - Examination of surface free energy -

  • Evaluation of solid surface properties is very important for formulation of solid dosage form, specially insoluble drugs. The contact angle of insoluble drugs was measured by the penetration rate into powder bed using Washburn equation and wicking method. From the measured contact angle data, the surface free energy value of pharmaceutical powders ${\gamma}$s was divided and analysized into the polar component, ${\gamma}$s$\^$p/ and the dispersion component, ${\gamma}$s$\^$d/. Furthermore, the data was interpreted for acid part, ${\gamma}$s$\^$+/ and base part, ${\gamma}$s$\^$$\square$/ of surface free energy. (omitted)

  • The phase stability of atomized U-10wt. %Mo powder and the thermal compatibility of dispersed fuel meats at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 50$0^{\circ}C$ have been characterized. Atomized U-10Mo powder has a good \ulcorner-U phase stability, and excellent thermal compatibility with aluminum matrix in a dispersion fuel. It is thought that the good phase stability is related to th large supersaturation of Mo atoms in the atomized particles. The reasons for the excellent thermal compatibility have been considered to be as follows. Before thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U in particle, supersaturated Mo atoms at ${\gamma}$-U grain boundaries inhibit the diffusion of Al atoms. After thermal decomposition of ${\gamma}$-U into ${\gamma}$-U and U$_2$Mo, the intermetallic compound of U$_2$Mo seems to retard the penetration of Al atoms. The penetration mechanisms of aluminum atoms in the atomized particles are assumed be classified as (a) diffusion through the reacted layer between fuel particles and Al matrix leaving a kernel-like unreacted island and (b) diffusion along grain boundaries showing several unreacted islands and more reacted regions.

Plane waves in an anisotropic thermoelastic

  • The present investigation is to study the plane wave propagation and reflection of plane waves in a homogeneous transversely isotropic magnetothermoelastic medium with two temperature and rotation in the context of GN Type-II and Type-III (1993) theory of thermoelasticity. It is found that, for two dimensional assumed model, there exist three types of coupled longitudinal waves, namely quasi-longitudinal wave (QL), quasi-transverse wave (QTS) and quasi-thermal waves (QT). The different characteristics of waves like phase velocity, attenuation coefficients, specific loss and penetration depth are computed numerically and depicted graphically. The phenomenon of reflection coefficients due to quasi-waves at a plane stress free with thermally insulated boundary is investigated. The ratios of the linear algebraic equations. These amplitude ratios are used further to calculate the shares of different scattered waves in the energy of incident wave. The modulus of the amplitude and energy ratios with the angle of incidence are computed for a particular numerical model. The conservation of energy at the free surface is verified. The effect of energy dissipation and two temperatures on the energy ratios are depicted graphically and discussed. Some special cases of interest are also discussed.

  • CFRP composite materials have wide application in structure materials of airplane, ships, and aero space vehicles because of their high strength and stiffness. This paper is to study the effects of curvature and orientation angle on the penetration characteristics of CFRP laminate shell. They are staked with 8 Ply specimens [0$_2$/90$_2$]$_{s}$, [0/90$_2$/0]$_{s}$ and the stacked of outer plates degree with 12 Ply specimens [0$_3$/90$_3$]$_{s}$, [0$_2$/90$_2$/0]$_{s}$ and [90$_3$/0$_3$], [90$_2$/0$_2$/90]S. They are manufactured to varied curvature radius (R=100,150,200mm and $\infty$). They are cured by heating to the appropriate harding temperature(13$0^{\circ}C$) by mean of a heater at the vaccum bag of the autoclave. Test specimens were prepared with dimensions 100mm$\times$140mm. When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the velocity of the steel ball was measured both before and after impact by determining the time for it to pass two ballistic-screen sensor located a known distance apart. In general, kinetic energy after impact-kinetic energy before impact rised in all specimens. This study observed a fracture mode inside the specimen after a penetration test using a digital camera and it examined a fracture mode and a penetration mode to stack of outer orientation angle and curvature.rvature.

유출된 풍화유와 분산유의 조간대 침투 및 생태계 영향 - 용존상 물질의 침투량 변화 - (Penetration of Weathered Oil and Dispersed Oil and its Ecological Effects on Tidal Flat - as Infiltration of Dissolved Matter -)

  • 본 연구에서는 조간대에서 유출된 기름의 표착 및 침투과정을 파악하고, 침투된 기름의 해수 침투차단 여부를 검토하는 것을 목적으로 하여 모의 조간대를 이용하여 연구를 수행하였다. 표착된 기름의 침투깊이는 분산유가 가장 낮았으며, 풍화유 그리고 원유의 순서로 깊어지는 경향을 나타냈다. 그리고 기름의 침투는 표착된 기름의 양에 의해 좌우되는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 유출된 기름의 침투는 첫번째 조석에서 거의 대부분 결정되며 그이후에는 거의 변화가 없었다. 침투된 기름은 토양 표층으로부터 2 cm 부분이 가장 농도가 높음을 알았다. 기름의 침투량의 증가와 더불어 해수의 침투량이 감소하였으며, 분산유보다는 원유나 풍화유가 보다 많은 양의 해수를 차단하였다. 따라서 해수의 침투량의 차단이라는 관점에서 볼 때 연안 조간대에서 표착유의 저서생물에 대한 피해는 풍화유나 원유가 분산유보다 클것으로 사료된다.

TBE의 굴착성능 평가를 위한 회전식 절삭시험의 적용 (Application of Rotary Cutting Test for Performance Assessment of Tunnel Boring Extender)

  • 본 연구에서는 회전식 절삭시험기를 활용하여 TBE (Tunnel Boring Extender)의 굴착효율을 평가하였다. 회전식절삭시험에서 TBE에 의한 굴착과정을 모사하기 위하여 중앙부가 선행 굴착되어 있는 중공형의 암석모사시험체를 모르타르를 이용하여 제작하였다. 회전식 절삭시험기에 설치된 언더커팅 디스크(undercutting disc cutter, UDC)를 이용하여 나선궤적을 따라 암석을 절삭함으로써 TBE에 의한 굴착과정을 모사하였으며, 언더커팅 디스크의 절삭조건을 변화시켜가며 절삭조건들이 커터작용력 및 비에너지에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 시험결과로부터 UDC의 커터작용력은 반경압입깊이와 수직압입깊이가 증가함에 따라 선형적으로 증가하는 경향을 확인할 수 있었으며, 세 방향의 작용력 중 수직력의 비중이 매우 크게 나타났다. 반면 비에너지는 반경방향과 수직방향 압입깊이에 따라 지속적으로 감소하는 경향을 나타내었고, 특히 두 압입깊이의 비에 따라 비에너지가 최소화되는 지점이 나타날 것으로 판단되었다.

연안 조간대에 표착된 기름이 입자상 물질의 토양침투에 미치는 영향의 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on Effect of Stranded Oil on the Penetration of Particulate Matters in Tidal Flat)

  • 본 연구에서는 파도에너지가 비교적 작은 폐쇄성수역의 사질 조간대를 대상으로 하여 입자상 물질의 토양 침투거동을 파악하고, 유출된 기름의 조간대 사면표착이 입자상 물질의 토양침투 차단 여부를 규명하는 것을 목적으로 하여 모의 조간대 실험장치를 이용하여 실험을 하였다. 폐쇄성 수역과 같은 파도에너지가 작은 조간대에서는 쇄파대에서 붕괴된 파도에 의해서 입자상물질이 orbital 운동을 하면서 반원형태의 침투거동 (semi-circular penetration behavior)을 보였다. 또한 사면의 구배와 쇄파파고의 증가에 따라서 입자상물질의 침투속도도 증가하였다. 조석에 의해서는 토양중 해수의 이동방향과 동일한 방향으로 $45^{\circ}$ 각도를 이루며 토양중으로 침투하였다. 유출된 기름이 토양사면에 표착됨으로 인해 형성된 점착성의 유막은 입자상 물질의 토양침투를 차단하였으며, 이로인해 해수중의 식물성 플랑크톤, 세균, 유기쇄설물과 같은 입자상물질의 침투를 방해하여 조간대에 서식하는 저서생물의 먹이 공급을 감소시켜 연안 생태계에 악영향을 미칠것으로 판단된다.

EVALUATION OF A PENETRATION-REINFORCING AGENT TO PREVENT THE AGING OF CONCRETE

  • Concrete has three major properties after a penetration-reinforcing agent is applied on its surface. First, the durability is improved by the sol-gel process of synthesized material from the polycondensation of TEOS (tetra-ethoxyorthosilicate) and acrylate monomer. Second, the capability to absorb impact energy is reinforced through the formation of a soft and flexible layer of organic monomers by Tea (Tetra Ethyl Amin). Third, the capability to prevent deterioration is enhanced by adding isobutyl-orthosilicate and alcohol. The performance and application of an agent developed through the synthesis of organic and inorganic material in an effort to prevent concrete from deterioration and improve the durability of concrete structures were verified in diverse experiments. The results of these experiments showed that the application of the proposed penetration-reinforcing agent has the effect of increasing the compressive strength by filling up the internal pores of concrete with physically and chemically stable compounds after penetrating the concrete. It also improves the durability against the deterioration factors such as salt water damage, carbonation, freezing and thawing, and compound deterioration. Therefore, it is confirmed that the penetration-reinforcing agent is a useful substance for the management and repair of concrete structures.

Investigation of ratio of TBM disc spacing to penetration depth in rocks with different tensile strengths using PFC2D

  • In this study, the effect of the tensile strength and ratio of disc spacing to penetration depth on the efficiency of tunnel boring machine (TBM) is investigated using Particle flow code (PFC) in two dimensions. Models with dimensions of $150{\times}70mm$ made of rocks with four different tensile strength values of 5 MPa, 10 MPa, 15 MPa and 20 MPa were separately analyzed and two "U" shape cutters with width of 10 mm were penetrated into the rock model by velocity rate of 0.1 mm/s. The spacing between cutters was also varied in this study. Failure patterns for 5 different penetration depths of 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, and 7 mm were registered. Totally 100 indentation test were performed to study the optimal tool-rock interaction. An equation relating mechanical rock properties with geometric characteristics for the optimal TBM performance is proposed. The results of numerical simulations show that the effective rock-cutting condition corresponding to the minimum specific energy can be estimated by an optimized disc spacing to penetration depth, which, in fact, is found to be proportional to the rock's tensile strength.

Design and Dynamic Performance Analysis of a Stand-alone Microgrid - A Case Study of Gasa Island, South Korea

  • This paper presents the design and dynamic analysis of a stand-alone microgrid with high penetration of renewable energy. The optimal sizing of various components in the microgrid is obtained considering two objectives: minimization of levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and maximization of renewable energy penetration. Integrating high renewable energy in stand-alone microgrid requires special considerations to assure stable dynamic performance, we therefore develop voltage and frequency control method by coordinating Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and diesel generators. This approach was applied to the design and development of Gasa Island microgrid in South Korea. The microgrid consists of photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, lithium-ion batteries and diesel generators. The dynamic performance of the microgrid during different load and weather variations is verified by simulation studies. Results from the real microgrid were then presented and discussed. Our approach to the design and control of microgrid will offer some lessons in future microgrid design.
