The adsorption and movement characteristics of herbicide pendimethalin was studied in three kinds of soil, sandy loam, silty clay and loam. The results of the batch test and columnexperimentweresummarizedasfollows. The shaking time reached to the adsorption equilibrium of pendimethalin in soils was 6 hours. The adsorption rates of pendimethalin for sandy loam, silty clay and loam were 59.6%, 77.3% and 64.0%, respectively. The adsorption isotherms with the Freundlich equation showed better consistency than that with the Langmuir one. The adsorption coefficients of pendimethalin for soils were 8.0. 16.1 and 9.5. respectively. When breakthrough point was 0.05Co, the breakthrough times reached for soils were 256 minutes, 810 minutes and 420 minutes. respectively.
This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of light, organophosphorus compounds and plant growth regulators on phytotoxicity of pendimethalin (3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitro-N-1-ethyl propylamine) in rice (Oryza saliva L.). The phytotoxicity of pendimethalin on post-germination growth of rice was greatly reduced by light treatment. This effect resulted from photodecomposition of pendimethalin. Antidoting activity on phytotoxicity of pendimethalin varied with the kind of organophosphorus compounds used and the application time. The greatest antidoting effect was obtained from edifenphos (0-3thy1 S,S-diphenylphosphorothioate). However, the effect was not observed when edifenphos was applied prior to pendimethalin. There was no antidoting effect of indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) and kinetin used alone, but combinations of 3 ppmw IAA + either 3 or 5 ppmw $GA_3$ and 1 ppmw kinetin + 10 ppmw $GA_3$ reduced the phytotoxicity of pendimethalin.
The genotoxicity of pendimethalin [N-(l-ethylpropyl)-2, 6-dinitro-3, 4-xylidine, C$\_$13/H$\_$19/N$_3$O$_4$, M.W.=281.3, CAS No. 40487-42-1], one of selective herbicide, was evaluated in bacterial gene mutation system, chromosome aberration in mammalian cell system and in vivo micronucleus assay with rodent. In bacterial gene mutation assay, pendimethalin revealed dose-dependent mutagenic potential in 313 ∼ 5,000 ${\mu}$g/plate of Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and TA 1537 both in the absence and presence of S-9 metabolic activation system, and TA 100 only in the absence of S-9 mixture. In the TA 1535, slight increase of revertant was also observed in the presence of S-9 metabolic activation system. No mutagenic potential was observed in the TA 1535 without metabolic activation system and TA l00 in the presence of S-9 mixture. In mammalian cell system using Chinese hamster lung (CHL) fibroblast, no clastogenicity of pendimethalin was observed both in the absence and presence of S-9 metabolic activation system in the concentration range of 2.32∼9.28 ${\mu}$g/ml. And also, in vivo bone marrow micronucleus assay, pendimethalin revealed no clastogenic potential in the dose range of 203∼810 mg/kg body weight after oral administration in mice. Consequently, in vitro chromosome aberration with mammalian cells and in vivo bone marrow micronucleus assay revealed no clastogenic potential of pendimethalin. However, pendimethalin revealed mutagenic potential in bacterial gene mutation assay.
In order to examine the factors affecting herbicidal injury of pepper, crop injury and growth response of 2 red pepper cultivars and 2 sweet pepper cultivars to napropamide and pendimethalin were evaluated under defferent conditions of soil texture, organic matter, soil temperature and seeding depth in the greenhouse. Growth response of 4 pepper cultivars was also examined by roos dipping to napropamide and pendimethalin. More inhibition of top leaf growth by root dipping to napropamide was occurred in red pepper cultivars than in sweet pepper cultivars. However, sweet pepper cultivars showed more severe inhibition of top leaf growth by root dipping to pendimethalin compared to red pepper cultivars. Crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was more severe in sandy soil than in loam soil and this trend was more remarkably shown in sweet pepper cultivars. Crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was reduced with the increase in organic matter especially in cv. Walgeykwan and cv. Orient al Pimento. As seeding depth of pepper cultivars became deeper, crop injury due to napropamide and pendimethalin was reduced in cv. Walgyekwan and cv. Oriental Pimento.
The persistence of pendimethalin in soil and ground water has an injurious effect on ecosystem. Pendimethalin-degrading bacterium was isolated from Masan, Gyeongnam province and temporarily identified as Bacillus sp. MS202 by the analysis of API CHB50, kit, FAME, and 16S rDNA sequence. from the analysis of pnedimethalin metabolite using TLC, GC, and GC-MS, we found that the degradation of pendimethalin by Bacillus sp. MS202 did not result in the dealkylated form, but the formation of the reduced compound, 6-amino-2-nitro-N(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-xylidine or 2- amino-6-nitro-N(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-xylidine.
Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorum) is one of minor crops in Korea. Only four ACCase inhibiting herbicides are registered for P. grandiflorum and the farmers usually use general but unregistered herbicides which can cause critical phytotoxicity. So, this study was conducted to investigate effects of alachlor and pendimethalin on germination and early growth of P. grandiflorum. To evaluate the effect of alachlor and pendimethalin, two herbicides were treated to the seeds in petri-dish and soil. In the petri-dish, alachlor completely inhibited the germination as well as pendimethalin inhibited the germination slightly but not significantly. In case of soil application, alachlor inhibited germination and plant height of P. grandiflorum significantly as well as pendimethalin inhibited plant height and root length significantly. We showed the possibility of phytotoxicity of alachlor and pendimethalin to P. grandiflorum and strongly suggest that two herbicides should not be used to the cultivation of P. grandiflorum. Unregistered herbicides should not be used for weed management and additional researches for screening of safe herbicide to minor crops should be conducted as soon as possible.
The effect of polyethylene film(P.E.) mulching on the degradation of alachlor(N-methoxymethyl-2, 6-diethyl ${\alpha}-chloroacetoanilide$), pendimethalin(3, 4-dimethyl-2, 6-dinitro-N-l-ethylpropylanilide) and diphenamid(N,N-dimethyl-2, 2-diphenylacetamide) in red pepper, peanut, and sesame fields was investigated. In soils under the non-mulching condition the half-lives of alachlor, pendimethalin and diphenamid were 3, 37 and $24{\sim}46$ days, respectively. However, the half-lives of those under the P.E. mulching condition were longer than under the non-mulching condition. The differences in the half-lives between P.E. mulching and non-mulching conditions were about 30 days for pendimethalin and from 20 to 90 days for diphenamid. However, the half-life of alachlor was hardly affected by P.E. mulching. Pendimethalin and alachlor were not detected in the harvasted red peppers, peanuts and sesame under P.E. mulching and non-mulching conditions. But, the residue of diphenamid in peanuts was 0. 147 ppm under the P.E. mulching condition and 0.071 ppm under the non-mulching condition, and the residue of diphenamid in sesame was 0.022 ppm under the P.E. mulching condition and 0.129 ppm under the non-mulching condition. The amounts, however, were below the tolerance limits for pesticide residue.

The adsorption and desorption of herbicides such as napropamide and pendimethalin was studied in three kinds of soil. sandy loam. silty clay and loam. The results of batch tests performed with various shaking time, pH, organic matter content and temperature in soil were summarized as follows. The shaking times reached to the equilibrium of the adsorption and desorption for napropamide and pendimethalin in soil were 12 and 6 hours. respectively. For each soil. the adsorption rates of napropamide were 23.35%. 31.57% and 25.95%, the desorption rates of them were 18.42%, 13.42% and 15.89%, respectively. And the adsorption rates of pendimethalin were 59.61%, 77.26% and 64.02%, and the desorption rates of them were 3.23%, 2.93% and 3.07%, respectively. The adsorption isotherms with the Freundlich equation showed better consistency than those with the Langmuir one. The adsorption was affected by the organic matter content when it exceed 2.0%. But if the organic matter content is below 2.0%, it was affected by the clay content. When the organic matter content is 0.95~7.45%, the adsorption coefficients ($K_{fa}$) of napropamide and pendimethalin were 1.17~2.50 and 4.74~16.08 and the desorption coefficients($K_{fd}$) of them were 5.33~34.06 and 24.25~134.00, respectively. Because of the physical adsorption between herbicide molecules and soil surface, little effect of pH variation of soils was appeared for the adsorption and desorption. Because of the solubility of herbicide is related to the temperature, the adsorption rate was decreased and the desorption rate was increased with the temperature increase, respectively.

The aim of this study was to evaluate different herbicides in corn-soybean intercropping for optimum growth, yield and nutritive value of forage under Korean environment conditions. Herbicidal treatments were randomly applied over five plots, viz. (1) Control treatment: no herbicide; (2) Alachlor; (3) Simazine; (4) Pendimethalin and (5) Mixture of alachlor and simazine herbicides in RCBD have three replications. Results depicted that treated herbicides exhibited significant effect over control of weeds. Simazine herbicide alone or mixed with alachlor had adverse effects on soybean but enhanced (p<0.05) corn production in terms of survivability, dry matter and digestible nutrients yield. Corn-soybean coupling and total dry matter yield were greater (p<0.05) in pendimethalin. Simazine-alachlor mixture reduced (p<0.05) soybean height. Conclusively, simazine could not be suitable for corn soybean intercropping because of having an adverse effect on soybean component. Pendimethalin could maintain growth and yield of corn and soybean both components. Effect of alachlor was comparable to that of pendimethalin.

This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of herbicide in winter cereal crops, barley and wheat. The efficacy of soil-applied herbicides, linuron EC and pendimethalin, thiobencarb GR was greater than that of butachlor EC. Linuron EC controlled average 95% and pendimethalin, thiobencarb GR controlled average 97% within 150 days after soil-applied treatment. When compared with untreated control, no visual injuries were detected at single and double dosage of linuron EC and pendimethalin, thiobencarb GR. The yield of barley increased in linuron EC and wheat increased in pendimethalin, thiobencarb GR treatments when compared with butachlor EC. The efficacy of foliage treatment, bentazone+propanil ME was greater than that of bentazone SL. Bentazone+propanil ME controlled average 96% in barley and 97% in wheat, within 30 days after foliage treatment. When compared with untreated control, no visual injuries were detected at single and double dosage of bentazone+propanil ME. The yield of barley and wheat increased in bentazone+propanil ME treatments when compared with bentazone SL. Based on these data, combinations of these herbicides could be applied to provide effective weed management in barley and wheat field.
