철강산업의 기술혁신패턴과 발전과제 (The Patterns and Directions of Technological Innovation in the Steel Industry)

  • This article prospects the patterns of technological innovation in the steel industry and suggests the directions of technological innovation in Korean steel industry. Technological innovation patterns can be analysed through technological trends, innovation-inducing mechanism, and innovators' relationships. In the technological trends, direct coupling of manufacturing processes, lasting growth of mini-mill, and the importance of technological integration are prospected. In the innovation-inducing mechanism, while production system will be specialized, the development of new steel materials and environment-friendly technological innovation will be accelerated. In the innovators' relationships, steel industry faces more complex competition and new forms of inter-firm cooperation including M&A, joint venture, and joint R&D. In order to cope with such changes in the technological innovation patterns, Korean steel industry need to establish core competence based on technological innovation through a great leap in R&D investment, the production of high value-added products, the development of new generation steel technologies, strategic joint R&D, comprehensive technological cooperation, and government's active support.

한국 생명공학산업의 기술혁신 패턴에 관한 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Patterns of Technological Innovation of Bio - Industry in Korea)

  • This paper is an inquiry into the patterns of technological innovation of bio - industry in Korea in comparison with the worldwide patterns. In another words, this study wants to check whether the patterns of technological innovation of bio - industry in Korea differ front those in advanced countries or not. The comparison is based on the theory of science - based industry asserted by Seol (2001) and Cho (2001). There are no specific difference in the patterns of technological innovation such as science - based innovation, capitalization of science, industries leading by scientific fields, the importance of venture firms for commercialization, high level of R&D expense to sales. Also the order of fields by size is similar to worldwide patterns. But the size of microbiology is bigger than that of worldwide patterns. The strength in microbiology may be the country specific features of Korea, like platform technology of Germany.

  • 본 연구에서는 국내 제조업의 기술혁신 패턴을 산업의 기술집약도에 따라 4개 부문-고기술, 중상기술, 중하기술 및 저기술-으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 과학기술정책연구원의 기술혁신조사(KIS 2008) 데이터를 이용한 실증분석 결과, 국내 기술혁신 패턴은 산업의 기술 수준이 높고 낮음에 관계없이 모든 산업부문에서 Pavitt의 과학기반형 특성을 나타내는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 고기술산업과 저기술산업의 기술혁신 패턴이 각각 Pavitt의 과학기반형(science-based)과 공급자주도형(supplier-dominated)으로 뚜렷하게 구분되는 해외 연구결과와는 차이를 나타낸다. 이는 국내 기술혁신활동이 해당 산업의 기술수준이나 특성을 제대로 반영하지 못한 채 고기술산업을 기준으로 획일화되어 있음을 보여주는 것이다. 향후 각 산업의 기술수준이나 특성을 반영하는 효과적인 기술 혁신정책 수립을 위해서는 국내 기술혁신 패턴이 이러한 양상을 나타내는 원인과 그것이 혁신성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 추가적인 연구가 필요하다 하겠다.

기술 및 수요속성에 따른 정보통신서비스 확산 패턴

  • Since technological innovation, adoption, and diffusion is a fundamental engine for a company's competitiveness and in turn a nation's industrial development, diffusion of technological innovation has been one of popular research themes to many researchers and scholars for decades. Especially, in today's knowledge-based economy, the IT technology became a fundamental infrastructure for a nation and thus their impact on a nation's economy has grown to be tremendous. This paper investigates the patterns of technological diffusion of 16 telecommunications services. Firstly, we identify the optimal diffusion model which represents the 15 IT innovation best in terms of goodness-of-fit. Secondly, based on the best model identified we cluster the 16 IT innovations according to their diffusion characteristics such as penetration rate and diffusion speed. Lastly, we categorize the innovations in terms of technology (voice-based innovation and data-based innovation) and demand (household-use and business-use) attributes, and compare their diffusion patterns and found some meaningful difference in diffusion patterns. We hope the result helpful to corporate managers as well as policy makers in relevant areas.

특허 데이터를 활용한 정보통신 산업혁신체제의 역동성 분석

  • The transformation of sector system in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), a prominent character in sector system, has been paid much attention in innovation theory with rapid change in information technologies and technological environment. In this context, we explore how Sectoral Innovation System (SIS) in ICT has been transformed since 1970 by employing US patent data and Proxy variables which measures the basic elements for SIS and its technological characteristics. By utilizing patent data, it is demonstrated that technological regimes, key links and Schumpeterian patterns of innovation in overall ICT sector have drastically transformed over the last three decades. We also reviewed how changes of knowledge bases and technological characteristics driving forces of dynamics in ICT help heterogeneous agents interact with environmental factors (Industrial structure and institutions), leading to industrial or economic growth and its dynamics in the historical perspective over ICT sector (Telecommunication, Computer and Semiconductor). Consequently, our research shows clearly that Schumpeterian patterns of innovation have shifted from Mark I to Mark II in ICT. Our study also provides a glimpse picture of dynamics patent data.

한국의 산업 유형별 기술경쟁력 패턴 (Technological Competitiveness of the Korean Industries)

  • This study aims to evaluate and identify the patterns of the technological competitiveness of the Korean industry. Such statistics as R&D expenditure and R&D manpower as input indexes, US patent registrations and export sales as output indexse were used. It was turned out that such industrial types as specialized-suppliers industries, scale-intensive industries and science-intensive industries showed relatively strong technical competitiveness. However, resource-intensive industries and labor-intensive industries which had maintained a competitive advantage in the 1970s and the 1980s appeared to be gradually losing their technological competitiveness. These results are by and large in accordance with the trends of export performance. This study conducted the canonical discriminant analysis in order to test the correctness of the patterns displayed in the technological competitiveness of the Korean industry. The result of the analysis showed that the five patterns of technical strength of the Korean industries are significantly independent each other for four respective variables which are used to distinguish industries. This implies that the ex ante industrial classification into five types was correct in terms of the ex post statistics, and that the patterns of technological competitiveness discovered in this study are also statistically correct.

  • This study examines the changing patterns of technological cooperation activities along technological development stages. Based on the longitudinal sample of 58 small and medium-sized companies in telecommunication equipment and device sectors, proposed hypotheses are tested using paired comparison t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Major findings of this study are as follows. Along technological development stages, (1) patterns of technological cooperation activities differ in terms of the extent and diversity of use, partners, method, and motivation and (2) the impact of specific forms of technological cooperation activities on the firm's technological innovation varies. In addition, some managerial and policy implications are presented and future research directions are suggested.

  • This study aims at developing some hypotheses on the politics of innovation in catching-up countries. Although innovation studies of catching-up countries have studied the process of acquisition of technological capabilities, the politics of innovation was not seriously considered in those studies. This study suggests a conceptual frame-works of the innovation politics and analyses the innovation process of mobile telecommunication system in Korea. Some hypotheses on the patterns and effects of innovation politics in catching-up countries are put forward.

기술집약적 중소기업의 탈추격형 기술혁신 특성 분석 (The Analysis of Post Catch-up Innovation Patterns of Technology-intensive Small and Medium Firms)

  • 본 연구에서는 기술집약형 중소기업의 탈(脫)추격형 기술혁신활동 유형과 특성을 살펴보았다. 탈(脫)추격형 혁신활동 유형은 기술심화형, 신기술기반형, 아키텍처 혁신형으로 구분할 수 있다. 사례연구 결과를 보면, 기술심화형의 경우 모방 기술에 의거한 지속적인 능력축적이 혁신활동의 토대가 되었다. 신기술기반형은 배태조직에서 수행한 기초연구, 아키텍처형은 배태조직에서 획득한 시스템 아키텍처에 대한 지식이 탈(脫)추격형 혁신활동의 기반이 되었다. 또 기술심화형의 경우 수요자 공급자 기업, 생산지향형 연구소가 지식획득에 중요한 역할을 하지만, 신기술기반형은 대학과 수요자 기업, 아키텍처 혁신형은 수요자 기업과의 관계가 탈(脫)추격형 혁신을 추진하는 데 중요한 역할을 수행했다. 또한 탈(脫)추격형 기술혁신의 일반적인 특성으로서, 신기술의 등장과 확산이 이루어지는 기술 경제패러다임의 전환기에 열리는 기회의 창을 효과적으로 활용했다는 점을 지적했다.
