One case showed significant difference in the breast shape and size after the treatment and the patient was satisfied with the result. However, the other case did not show noticeable change but subtle one, and satisfaction degree of the patient was also low. From the above cases, to figure out the effect of wild ginseng pharmacopuncture on pseudo-gynecomastia, further studies and reports on other affecting factors should be followed.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a comprehensive web-based nursing process program to assist nursing students and to evaluate the effects of the program. Methods: The system provides nursing students with guidelines based on NNN (NANDA, NOC, NIC) when the nursing students conduct a series of nursing procedures on diagnosis-outcome-intervention for a specific symptom. It also maintains and manages nursing processes actually conducted by students for clinical practices, and provides an environment where the patient information and nursing process can be converted into a formatted document for printing. This web-based program was used to surgical patients from April to June 2011. Results: The overall satisfaction rate was 3.64. The item with the highest score was, 'Do you think a web-based nursing process program is necessary?' (3.87), followed by 'Do you want to use this program when you become a nurse and implement the nursing process?' (3.33). Conclusion: These results indicate that implementation of web-based programs needs to be continued as an effective tool, but more research is needed on the best way to implement web-based programs in various clinical setting.

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop a schematized alarm-managing manual for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and to investigate its effects in maintaining continuity in the patients' treatment and promptly resolving alarms when CRRT is being carried out. Methods: Sixtynurses from two medical intensive care units (ICUs) (one experimental and one control) at one hospital were asked to answer a questionnaire including their CRRT nursing competency and satisfaction with the manual. Data on alarm resolution rate were collected by analyzing existing data, such as the details of each alarm and the number of resolutions around the clock in the CRRT device. Results: The alarm resolution rate and some of CRRT nursing competency scores in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group. The experimental group was also satisfied with the manual. Conclusion: The study confirmed that the schematized alarm-managing manual can be useful for ICU nurses to resolve alarms and can be used as a guideline. Application of this manual to clinical practices and its use can therefore, be encouraged through continuous education and promotion.

  • The authors compared 20 cases of preoperative and postoperative results in patients with hypernasality who were treated at Yongdong Severance hospital from January 1994 to August 1996. According to the severity of the hypernasality, types of operations such as superior based pharyngeal flap surgery or posterior pharyngeal wall augmentation was selected. The preoperative and postoperative results wert analyzed by 2 otorhinolaryngologists and 1 speech therapist through an endoscopic examination and voice evaluation. follow up period was 1 month to 17 months and mean was 5.6 months. Types of the velopharyngeal closure according to the mobility of soft palate and pharyngeal wall could be divided into 3 types : coronal type(2 cases), sagittal type(4 cases), and circular types(14 cases), The results indicated that sagittal type showed the best result. In surgical treatment for hypernasality, the mobility of the pharyngeal lateral wall and making suitable size of lateral per during surgery were the most important factors affecting the patient's satisfaction.

  • Although variable surgical methods of sympathetic nerve for palmar hyperhidrosis are curative and safe therapeutic options, they have some limitations such as compensatory sweating and anhidrosis of hand in long term satisfaction rate. Material and Method: Therefore, we tried to decrease severity of compensatory sweating and prevent excessive dryness of hand through selective division of rami communicantes of thoracic sympathetic ganglia distributed to the hands(ramicotomy). Result: In postoperative results, about half of the patients maintained humidity of hands and most of them showed no more than mild degree of compensatory sweating. Conclusion: Therefore, ramicotomy of thoracic sympathetic ganglia can be recommended as selective and physiologic surgical method for palmar hyperhidrosis.

  • Background: This study investigates improvements in non-value-added nursing activities in clinical work, in order to improve the efficiency and quality of nursing activities. Methods: The study was performed as a quality improvement project at a tertiary general hospital. The nursing activities that needed improvements were categories into admission care, discharge care, supply management, diagnostic work-up related activities, and others. The nursing time and frequency of non-value-added activities were compared across nine nursing units before and after implementation of the quality improvement program. Post-implementation patient and nurse satisfaction were subsequently analyzed. Result: Post-implementation, the time spent on non-value-added nursing activities was reduced and patients and nurses were satisfied with the improvements. Discussion: Reducing non-value-added activities in nursing can increase the work efficiency and ensure time for patient care, thus improving the quality of nursing care. For further study, accurate surveys on nursing activities based on nursing time are required.
