The present study was conducted to evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of Dangguijakyak-san(당귀작약산). We investigated the effects of cell proliferation in mouse spleen cell and RAW 264.7 macrophages cells. Dangguijakyak-san enhanced mitogenic activity in the dose-response manner in mouse spleen cells and RAW 264.7 macrophages cells. In nitric oxide (NO) synthesis and iNOS mRNA expression by Dangguijakyak-san, Dangguijakyaksan alone had an effect on NO synthesis and iNOS mRNA expression in RAW 264.7 cells. NO production and iNOS mRNA expression which is excessively induced by LPS decreased after treatment of Dangguijakyak-san. The expressions of cytokine gene by Dangguijakyak-san investigated using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In RT-PCR, IL-1α, IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA expressions induced in Dangguijakyak-san-treated RAW 264.7 cells. These data indicate that 1) Dangguijakyak-san can modulate various immune response and 2) the immunomodulatory effects of Dangguijakyak-san may be, in part, associated with the regulation of NO synthesis, the expressions of these cytokine as well as the mitogenic effect on spleen cells and macrophages cells.
A new medium for studies of diversity among populations of $A_1\;and\;A_2$ mating types of Phytophthora infestans has been evolved. The rye A agar and V-8 juice agar media on which P. infestans grows well have been amended with rhizome powder of Cyperus rotundus. A total of 259 isolates of $A_1\;and\;A_2$ mating types representing Japan, Korea, India, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Nepal, U.K and Medico were screened for their growth response on these two media. Most of the A1 isolates did not grow well on them except Thailand while growth of $A_2$ mating types differed as some grew on it whereas others did not. It is quite likely that the populations of $A_2$ mating types that did not grow well on rhizome-amended medium are of different clonal lineage. This suggests that this medium can be used for the study of diversification among the isolates of the same or both the mating types as well as to detect the newly introduced genetically different isolates of P. infestans in a locality where it was not reported earlier.

Saengjihwangeum-ja (SJHEJ) was recorded in DongEuiBoGam as being able to be used for treatment of Sogal whose concept had been applied to Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Modification of proteins by long term circulation of glucose leads to the formation of advanced glycation end product(AGE). Recent immunological studies demonstrated that ligation of AGE play an important role in the development of diabetic complications including atherosclerosis, which includes activation, adhesion, and migration of monocytes. Also, AGE and Maillard reaction product(MRP) could augment monocyte inflammatory responses via ligation of AGE receptor. In this study, the effects of SJHEJ extracts on the expression of inflammatory response-related genes such as tumor necrosis factor-$\alpha$, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, interferon-g-inducible protein-10, and cyclooxygenase-2 in the human monocyte cell line, THP-1 cells. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction revealed that SJHEJ had inhibitory effects on the expression of the TNF-a, MCP-1, IP-10, COX2, IL-1b genes in MRP-induced THP-1 cells. Treatment with SJHEJ had reduced reactive oxygen production in THP-1 cells stimulated by MRP. These inhibitory effects might be exerted via prevention of oxidative stress in activated monocytes. In addition, radical scavenging activity of SJHEJ was increased. These results suggest that SJHEJ has a beneficial effects for improve diabetic vascular complication.
Background: Most of the cervical cancer patients, including those with cervical adenocarcinomas, come at advanced stage in the developing world so its mortality is high. Radiotherapy is one of the treatment modality for advanced stage cervical adenocarcinomas, but its efficacy depends on several prognostic factors such as the stage, histopathology, presence of organ dysfunction and expression of cellular biology markers mainly involve in cell proliferation such as the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Some research indicates that activation of EGFR in malignancy (including cervical cancer) correlates with aggressive behavior, a poor prognosis and decreasing sensitivity of radiotherapy. However, the combination between targeted therapies and radiotherapy are innovative approaches which may provide a good result. This study aimed to assess any correlation between expression of EGFR and response to radiotherapy in cervical adenocarcinoma cases. Materials and Methods: A total of 32 women were registered in a retrospective study period January 2007 and May 2014. Paraffin blocks from these patients were processed by classical histological techniques and for immunohistochemical staining of EGFR, scoring being accomplished according to the immunoreactive scoring (IRS) of Remmele and Stegner. Results: Among the studied molecular factors, there was significant correlation expression of EGFR with poor response to radiotherapy (p=0.0001). Conclusions: The result of this study showed a significant correlation between expression of EGFR and sensitivity of radiation in cervical adenocarcinoma cases. Further research is necessary to obtain information about new therapeutic management.

Inoculation of primary pepper leaves with an avirulent strain of Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria induced systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in secondary leaves. This SAR response was accompanied by the systemic expression of defense-related genes, a systemic microoxidative burst generating H2O2, and the systemic induction of ion-leakage and callose deposition in the non-inoculated, secondary leaves. Some defense-related genes encoding PR-1, chitinase, peroxidase, PR10, thionin, defensin and zinc-finger protein were distiilctly induced in the systemic leaves. The systemically striking accumulation of H$_2$O$_2$and strong increase in peroxidase activity in pepper was suggested to contribute to the triggering of cell death In the systemic micro-HRs, leading to the induction of SAR. Treatment of non-inoculated, secondary leaves with diphenylene iodinium (DPI), an inhibitor of the oxidative burst, substantially reduced the induction of some defense-related genes and subsequently SAR.

When plants are infected by plant pathogens, rapid cell responses are initiated for further inhibition from fast invasion of pathogens. Hypersensitive response (HR) of plant is well known defense response stopping pathogenesis process through rapid cell death. However, informations on the signaling pathway from reception of pathogen by host plants to appropriate resistant responses are very limited to date. Efficient perception of infection by pathogens and well-programmed signalling mechanism for appropriate responses are important for survival of plants. Plant have developed a sophisticated network(s) of defense/stress responses, among which one of the earliest signalling pathways after perception (of stimuli) is the evolutionary conserved Rop GTPase and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade.(중략)

Plant growth promoting fungi(PGPF) obtained from zoysiagrass rhizosphere offer dual advantages - induse systemic disease resistance response in cucumber to C. orbiculare infection and cause enhancement of plant growth and increase yield. PGPF protected plants either by colonizing roots or by their metabolites. PGPF offer an advantage by protecting plants for more than 9 weeks and 6 week in the greenhouse and field. PGPF-induced plants limited pathogen spore germination and decreased the number of infection hyphae on the leaf, and increased lignification at places of attempted pathogen infection, thus reducing the pathogen spread. PGPF elicited increased activities of chitinascs, glucanases, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase to C. orbiculare infection in cucumber plants. The role of PGPF in elevating cucumber defense response to pathogen infection suggests potential application of PGPF as biological control agents.
Phytotoxicity of the culture filtrate and culture conditions for the production of the phytotoxin by Exserohilum monoceras 92-044 were examined. The necrotic lesions were developed on the leaves of Echinochloa crus-galli within 48 hrs after inoculation of the culture filtrate, and the leaves were completely blighted within 5∼7 days. Maximum toxicity was found in the culture broth containing 20% V-8 juice. Phytotoxin accumulation and fungal growth reached their highest peak at around 11 days. Typical symptom appeared on the leaf of E. crus-galli within 48 hrs. Only a weak chlorosis appeared on rice, Arundinella hirta (THUNB) and henry crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis SCOP.), but no further symptom developed.

Changes in physiological and biochemical patterns in lucerne plants caused by the presence of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma australasia', which is one of the significant pathogens causing yield losses in lucerne plants, were investigated. Significant differences were evident in total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and protein amounts between 'Ca. Phytoplasma australasia'-positive and negative lucerne plants. Stress-related metabolites such as phenol, malondialdehyde, and proline accumulations in 'Ca. Phytoplasma australasia'-positive plants were remarkably higher than those of phytoplasma-negative plants. As a response to disease attack, phytoplasma-positive plants exhibited higher antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and catalase) and nonenzymatic metabolite responses such as jasmonic and salicylic acids. We state that partial disease responses were revealed for the first time to breed resistant lucerne lines infected by 'Ca. Phytoplasma australasia'.

Twenty-nine isolates of Fusarium solani, originally isolated from diseased cotton roots in Egypt, were evaluated for their ability to cause symptoms on four genetically diverse cotton cultivars. Analysis of variance showed highly significant variance among cultivars, and isolates as well as the isolate x genotype interactions were highly significant(p < 0.0001). Although most isolates showed intermediate pathogenicity, there were two groups of isolates that showed significant differences in pathogenicity on all four cultivars. None of the cultivars were found to be immune to any of the isolates. On all cultivars, there were strong significant positive correlations between dry weight and each of preemergence damping-off, survival, and plant height. Considering 75% similarity in virulence, two groups comprising a total of 29 isolates were recognized. Ninety-three percent of the isolates have the same pathogenicity patterns with consistently low pathogenicity, and narrow diversity of virulence. Isolates Fs4 and Fs5 shared the same distinct overall virulence spectrum with consistently high pathogenicity. There was no clear-cut relationship between virulence of the isolates based on reaction pattern on 4 cultivars and each of host genotype, previous crop, and geographic origin.
