  • This paper presents a consolidated patent index to measure national technology innovation and science technology activation, as well as index for the main constituent such as corporation, research organization by comprehensive analysis of existing patent index. It is classified by macroscopic index and analytical index in the consolidated patent index, in which macroscopic index is to present a degree of innovation in national scientific innovation and is divided into the Consolidated Patent Index and Index for comparison between countries. The analytical index basically designed to measure R&D activity by the main constituent is divided to present by quantitative index utilizing bibliographical data in patent and other technical publication related therein, and qualitative index for analysis of bibliographical data. In this paper, the Consolidated Patent Index is presented by adding Creation Index representing for patent by developing excellent technology, Evaluation Index representing valuable technology thereof, and Utility Index representing applicability diffused.

  • This paper proposes the technological level assessment which improved reliability and the efficient noise elimination methods in the process of establishing patent map analysis data. In order to eliminate efficiently noise (removed by the manual process in the past), the paper applies the Logical Operator 'AND', makes it a program in excel VBA(Visual Basic Application), and obtains the valid data. For the improved reliability technological level assessment of the patents, the study calculates average number of claims, Patent Family Size(PFS), Cites Per Patent (CPP), Triad Patent Families, Standardization Patent Diversification Index (stdPCPI), and haF-index(Hirsch a Family index). The result which applied noise exclusion work showed less than 10% of acquired patent data ratio and confirmed high reliability. The result that apply proposed technological level assessment index makes sure that balanced technological level assessment which improved reliability by producing synthetic technological level assessment.

  • This research suggested a new patent index based on patent citation technique using cited information, For this purpose, comparison research on library and patent information related citation database providing citation index was done. The information quality and meaning on the impact factor of JCR and the technology factor of CHI were reinterpreted. The former emphasizes the quality of continuous publication using relative citation frequency. The latter only emphasizes the information itself because it assesses the quality of patent characteristics. To overcome these difficulties, the latter re-authorized a relative quality to the organization possessing the patent using technology impact factor. Three new patent index were proposed on the basis of cited information to complement this. However, the comparative object was limited to American patent information that presented cited information of patent applied cases, and the comparison and research of domestic patent information could not be done.

  • Purpose Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a core technology, leading the 4th industrial revolution. This study aims to diagnose the Korean's national competitiveness for AI technologies through patent analyses. Design/methodology/approach In this study, KIWEE and Derwent Innovation databases were used as data source of patents. we extracted 10,510 AI patents data with keywords and classified them into 15 subcategories of AI technology. We executed patent analyses for activity index, patent intensity index, technology strength, and patent family size and diagnosed Korea's national competitiveness in AI industry. Findings The results showed that Korea is less competitive than the United States and Japan in AI industry. However, patent amount has increased since 2010, which is encouraging result. This study has implication on the need for human and R&D investment in AI industry.

  • In order to investigate of technology competitiveness for domestic engineering enterprise, using the quantitative and objective patent. In these result, the technology competitiveness(Patent Activity Index, Patent Family Size Index, Patent Impact Index, Technology strength) of our enterprise is far inferior to another country. So we should try to achieve our superiority in competitive power, we devote ourself to put through technical improvements of our domestic engineering enterprise in many ways.

  • The Schizandra chinensis (Korean name : omija) is a fruit native to northeast Asia that is cultivated in South Korea and China. Using 1,938 valid patents of 6 group countries, we analyzed the patent trend based on year, countries, applicants, and technology. The technologies are categorized the 10 sub-technologies such as medicine, quasi-drugs, food, feed, cosmetics, cultivation, genome, manufacture, preprocessing, and etc. The technology level and competitiveness are analyzed using patent index such as cites per patent, patent impact index, patent family size and technology strength. In Korea, patent number rapidly increasing and individual technical level is lower than other countries. However, overall technical competitiveness is estimated high due to multiple patents. We suggest that cosmetics and cultivation fields are most likely to be developed in future omiza technology development in Korea. Our study will provides to the information of technical trend to support performing of new projects for omija plant.

  • We evaluate the technical competitiveness of Korea in lubricating oil industries by comparatively analyzing the patent activities. In achieving the goal, we collect and statistically analyze the historical patent data of lubricants production technologies. We here consider nine technology groups classified by their raw material types and process features of four countries such as USA, Japan, EU and Korea. We then evaluate Korea's competitiveness in lubricating oil industries using different patent index including patent family size, cites per patent, patent impact index and technology strength. Based on the evaluation results, we finally propose the practical strategies to improve Korea's competitiveness in lubricants industries.

  • This research proposes the use of a patent analysis methodology that can suggest promising technology in the ICT sector at the micro-level. This approach identifies core patents from the technology field, groups them as research frontiers (RFs), and develops a visualized network based on the citing relationships to monitor the relationship among RFs. In addition, it calculates a "promising index" based on the growth potential, impact, and marketability of patents to ultimately derive promising RFs. To illustrate the proposed approach, this research presents analysis results for a chosen area, which is the user interface and user experience (UI/UX) technology field. By proposing promising technological fields at the micro-level, the proposed methodology will serve as a useful decision-making support tool in selecting R&D projects, technology planning, and determining technology policy direction.
