Semi-active vibration control is one of the attractive control methods for space application due to its robustness as passive damping system and much higher damping performance than passive system. In this paper, performance investigation of semi-active damper considering a mass modeling of functional fluid inside of the damper has been performed. Numerical investigation results confirmed that the damper model considering the fluid mass is effective for vibration suppression performance at a relatively low viscosity range of functional fluid. Based on the analysis results, design method to enhance the performance of semi-active damper has been proposed.

Friction damping is one of the attractive vibration control technique for space structures due to its simplicity and large damping capacity. However, passive approaches for friction damping have a limitation because energy is no longer dissipated at sticking. In order to overcome this problem, semi-active control methods to adjust normal force at frictional interface have been studied in previous researches. In this paper, two semi-active friction control method is compared by simulating SDOF model of truss structure. The first approach is on-off control to maximize rate of energy dissipation, whereas the second concept is variable friction force control to minimize amplitude ratio for each half period. The maximum friction force, control variable in on-off control method, is obtained to minimize 1% settling time, and is different from optimal friction force in passive control. Simulation results show that performance of on-off control is better than that of variable friction force control in terms of settling time and controlled friction force.
Passive dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) are often used to suppress the excessive vibration of a large structure due to their simple construction and low maintenance cost compared to other vibration control techniques. A new type of passive DVA consists of two pendulums connected with spring and dashpot element is investigated. This research evaluated the performance of the DVA in reducing the vibration response of a two degree of freedom shear structure. A model for the two DOF vibration system with the absorber is developed. The nominal absorber parameters are calculated using a Genetic Algorithm(GA) procedure. A parametric study is performed to evaluate the effect of each absorber parameter on performance. The simulation results show that the optimum condition for the absorber frequencies and damping ratios is mainly affected by pendulum length, mass, and the damping coefficient of the pendulum's hinge joint. An experimental model validates the theoretical results. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed technique is able be used as an effective alternative solution for reducing the vibration response of a multi degree of freedom vibration system.

Excessive acceleration experienced at the top floors in a building during wind storms affect the serviceability of the building with respect to occupant comfort and discomfort. Tuned liquid damper (TLD) and multiple tuned liquid damper (MTLD), which are passive control devices consisting of a rigid tank filled with liquid, are used to suppress vibration of structures. These TLD and MTLD offer several potential advantages-low costs, easy installation in existing structures and effectiveness even for small-amplitude vibrations. This study carries out a theoretical estimation of the most effective damping ratios that can be achieved by TLD and MTLD. Damping by TLD an MTLD reduced the frequency response of high-rise buildings by approximately 40% in urban and suburban areas.
Passive, semi-active and active dampers have been used to dissipate energy in mechanical systems. Semi-active dampers have higher performance than passive dampers and require lower power to operate than active dampers. Its damping characteristics can be changed appropriately for varying conditions. In this paper, we developed a semi-active damper based on Magnetorheological(MR) fluid. MR fluid has a variable damping characteristics proportional for the magnetic field intensity. It has several advantages such as high strength, low viscosity, robustness in impurities and wide temperature range of operational stability. We designed a constrained rotary MR damper base on valve mode which can dissipate more energy per unit volume. The system with Bingham characteristics is obtained and proved by the experiment.

In the process of accurate manufacture and measurement, it is necessarily required to isolate external or internal vibration due to external disturbance and internal actuators. The higher vibration isolation system gets damping around resonance, the better it is generally. This paper analyzes the performance of an existing passive air-spring for vibration isolation table by using experiment and simulation. Optimal design for a passive air spring can be obtained by tuning the size of the orifice. Also design for an active isolation system is carried out by applying PID controller and considering non-linearity of pneumatic characteristics with help of look-up table. We have developed the active vibration isolation table with the better isolation performance.
In this paper an optimal damped input filter is designed based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for an electrolytic capacitor-less AC-AC converter. Sufficient passive damping and minimum losses in passive damping elements, minimization of the filter output impedance at the filter cut-off frequency, minimization of the DC-link voltage and input current fluctuations, and minimization of the filter costs are the main objectives in the multi-objective optimization of the input filter. The proposed filter has been validated experimentally using an induction motor drive system employing an electrolytic capacitor-less AC-AC converter.
Most washing machines are now produced as a drum-type, where a washing drum mounted on a suspension system with springs and dampers, to minimize the transmittance of the vibration from the drum to the frame. A low-cost MR damper, using magneto-rheological fluids, can produce variable damping forces by changing the current values in the magnetic coil. Experimental results show the comparison of the vibration attenuation performances between two different dampers. One test set-up uses a passive damper and another one uses a MR fluid damper. The test results showed that the vibration amplitude of the washing machine with the MR damper is much smaller than the case with the passive damper.

The coupled finite/boundary element method is used in numerical analysis for acoustic radiation from the vibration of rectangular composite plate which is simply supported. This analysis is validated using the Wallace equation for an isotropic plate. Active control of sound fields has been tarried out using 3 pairs of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and a pair of viscoelastic material by Passive constrained layer damping treatment. The results show that the optimal placement of piezoelectric sensor/actuator and VE patch is required to control the sound fields from a vibrating composite plate.
