Fly ash enters axial compressor when a turbomachinery is operated in an adverse environment. We have numerically investigated erosion of the blade and shroud in the turbulent compressor passage flow under the influence of gas-particle two-phase interaction. There have appeared quasi-three dimensional calculations on this subject but not the complete three-dimensional gas-particle interaction as done in the present work. Lagrangian particle tracing technique is used on the base of parallel processing for efficient calculation. Accuracy of the present code is tested using the benchmark lPL nozzle. In the DFVLR compressor blades, we have shown that a large number of particles passing through the tip clearance make impact on the blade tip and on the shroud. Higher degree of erosion is resulted by the heavier particles due to the centrifugal force.

With an attempt to enhance the visibility of laser beam, we have investigated a black matrix with scattering particles by ray tracing simulations. As the scattering particle density is increased, the detected power by the receiver is increased, thereby enhancing the visibility. In reality, the visibility is reduced with increasing incident angle (away from the normal incidence) of laser beam, a phenomenon also observed by ray tracing simulations. It is due to the fact that the mean path is increased within a highly absorptive BM layer or a smaller number of rays hit the BM area when the incident angle is high. Embedding a number of scattering particles into BM may bring in crosstalk among pixels. However, it is negligible because scattered rays inside highly absorptive BM are re-scattered due to the high scattering particle density, decreasing the power of scattered rays into the active areas.
Recently, the sandwich injection molding has drawn attention because it offers the flexibility of using the optimal properties of two different but compatible polymers and is also one of the most p romising methods in connection with recycling of thermoplastics. In this paper, a new particle tracing algorithm is presented in order to describe the advancement of core polymer melt during filling stage. The main advantage of this algorithm is the use of identity field information rather than tracking a set of fluid particles. In addition, to model the process accurately, especially to detect the possible

In this paper, a new preform design method is proposed to eliminate the excessive flash in metal forging process. After carrying out finite element simulation of the process with an initial billet, backward particle tracing is performed from the outlet of the flash. Then, the region which belongs to the flash is easily found .. The process is analyzed again with the redesigned billet which is removed that region the above mentioned region. The optimal preform shape which minimizes the amount of flash without changing the forgibility can be obtained in several iterations.
Shock wave propagating in the particle suspension has important applications. Examples are shock waves occurring in the solid rocket plume and detonation of dusty particles by shock waves. Experimental and numerical investigations on this subject have drawn much attention. More recently, Sivier et al. numerically simulated the experiment of Sommerfeld using the unstructured adaptive grid. They used the Eulerian-Eulerian approach based on the continuum assumption for both gas and particles. In the present paper, a new numerical method using the Lagrangian particle tracing technique and unstructured particle-adaptive grid for the polydisperse system is presented. It is explained why the existing numerical calculation has showed discrepancy with the experimental results by Sommerfeld.

The present investigation deals with the study of the internal flow phenomena of the counterflow type vortex tube using experimental testing and numerical simulation. Visualization was carried out using the surface tracing method, injecting dye on the vortex tube wall using a needle. Vortex tube is made of acrylic to visualize the surface particle tracing and the input air pressure was varied from 0.1MPa to 0.3MPa. The experimentally visualized results on the tube show that there is an apparent sudden changing of the trajectory on the vortex tube wall which was observed in every experimental test case. This may indicate the stagnation position of the vortex flow. The visualized stagnation position moves towards the vortex generator with increase in cold flow ratio and input pressure. Three-dimensional computational study is also conducted to obtain more detailed flow information in the vortex tube. Calculated total pressure, static pressure and total temperature distributions in the vortex tube were in good agreement with the experimental data. The computational particle trace on the vortex tube wall is very similar to that observed in experiments.
A Lagrangian approach based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate large and/or sharp deformations and fragmentations of interfaces, including free surfaces, through tracing each particle with physical quantities. According to the concept of the particle-based CFD method, it is possible to apply it to both fluid particles and solid particles such as sand, gravel, and rock. However, the presence of more than two different phases in the same domain can make it complicated to calculate the interaction between different phases. In order to solve multiphase problems, particle interaction models for multiphase problems, including surface tension, buoyancy-correction, and interface boundary condition models, were newly adopted into the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. The newly developed MPS method was used to simulate a typical validation problem involving dam breaking. Because the soil and other particles, excluding the water, may have different viscosities, various viscosity coefficients were applied in the simulations for validation. The newly developed and validated MPS method was used to simulate the mobile beds induced by broken dam flows. The effects of the viscosity on soil particles were also investigated.
In general, it is considered that a pillar between closely-spaced tunnel is sensitive for stress concentration. Stability of a pillar is key factor for excavation of closely-spaced tunnel. In this paper, the study is focused on tracing the behaviors, displacement and plotting damages around tunnels that is modelled with Particle Flow Code, $PFC^{2D}$. Parametric study was performed with changing distance between center of tunnels and coefficient of earth pressure(K). Scaled-model tests were also carried out to validate a numerical analysis model. It was found that $PFC^{2D}$ could show dynamic visualized result in quite good agreement with the experimental test.
