This study is to investigate the effect of the moisture, volatile matter and particle size in the coal on the pulverized coal combustion characteristics using CFD. The results show that as the moisture content in coal increases, flame temperature decreases because of heat loss driven from latent heat of vaporization and reduction of heating value. As the volatile matter content in the coal increases, the temperature in the region near the burner increases, while the temperature in rear region of boiler decreases. The solution to keep the temperature in the rear region of boiler is suggested that particle size is needed to be larger. As the particle size increases, the temperature in the rear region of boiler show tendency to increase, for combustion burning time of coal could be extended.

For the purpose of preparation of monodispersed spherical zinc oxide fine particles, and experimental research on the preparation of zinc oxide particles from zinc salts solutions by high temperature precipitation reaction was performed. Zinc oxide particles were precipitated from all the precipitation solutions tested if the precipitation temperature was higher than 60$^{\circ}$C. As the precipitation temperature increased until 80$^{\circ}$C, the average particle diameter of zinc oxide particles decreased and the narrower particle size distribution were obtained. Spherical zinc oxide fine particles with relativeyl narrow particle size distribution were precipitated from the ZnSo4 solutions with NaOH as precipitant. Final pH of precipitation solution had an effect on the amount of zinc oxide precipitated, but had no effect on the their particle size or size distribution.

This study investigates the effect of particle size on the detergency of particulate soil using an $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particle as the model. Monodispersed spherical $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particles were prepared by the hydrothermal aging of an acidic $FeCl_3$ and HCl solution. The $\xi$-potential of PET fiber was measured by the streaming potential method. The potential energy of interaction between the particle and fiber was calculated using the heterocoagulation theory for a sphere-plate model. The $\xi$-potential of PET fiber and potential energy of interaction between particles and fiber increased with a decreasing particle size in a DBS solution. However, in the nonionic surfactant solution, the $\xi$-potential signs of PET fiber and $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$ particles were (-) and (+), respectively; there was no repulsive power between the particles and substrate. The adhesion of particles to the fabric increased with increasing particle size in the anionic surfactant solution and their removal from the fabric increased with a decreasing particle size. The adhesion of particles to the fabric and their removal from the fabric was biphasic with a maximum and minimum at 0.1% concentration of the surfactant solution. In the nonionic surfactant solution the adhesion of particles to fabric and their removal from the fabric were greater than the ones in the anionic surfactant DBS solution.
A series of wet grinding experiments have been carried out using a stirred ball mill to systematically investigate consideration of grinding characteristics. The particle size distribution and median diameter of the grinding consumption power for a given grinding time were considered. Also, the effect of grinding aids on particle size and grinding consumption energy defined as the summation of grinding power was investigated. The grinding aids had influence on the smaller products size and decrease grinding consumption energy because the function of grinding aids were to be attribute to the prevention of agglomeration and ball and grinding chamber wall coating of sample powder. The grinding process seemed to be controlled by the force of agglomeration of the ground products. It was demonstrated that the particle size and grinding consumption energy could be more decreased by the addition of grinding aids.

A novel technique for fine particle beam focusing under the atmospheric pressure is introduced using a radiation pressure assisted aerodynamic lens. To introduce the radiation pressure in the aerodynamic focusing system, a 25m plano-convex lens having 2.5mm hole at its center is used as an orifice. The particle beam width is measured for various laser power, particle size, and flow velocity. In addition, the effect of the laser characteristics on the beam focusing is evaluated comparing an optical tweezers type and pure gradient force type. For the pure aerodynamic focusing system, the particle beam width was decreased as increasing particle size and Reynolds number. Using the optical tweezers type, the particle beam width becomes smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system about $16\%,\;11.4\%\;and\;9.6\%$ for PSL particle size of $2.5{\mu}m,\;1.0{\mu}m,\;and\;0.5{\mu}m$, respectively. Particle beam width was minimized around the laser power of 0.2W. However, as increasing the laser power higher than 0.4W, the particle beam width was increased a little and it approached almost a constant value which is still smaller than that of the pure aerodynamic focusing system. For pure gradient force type, the reduction of the particle beam width was smaller than optical tweezers type but proportional to laser power. The radiation pressure effect on the particle beam width is intensified as Reynolds number decreases or particle size increases relatively.
In this study, nano-sized indium oxide powder with the average particle size below 100 nm is fab-ricated from the indium chloride solution by the spray pyrolysis process. The effects of the reaction temperature, the concentration of raw material solution and the inlet speed of solution on the properties of powder were studied. As the reaction temperature increased from 850 to $1000^{\circ}C$, the average particle size of produced powder increased from 30 to 100 nm, and microstructure became more solid, the particle size distribution was more irregular, the intensity of a XRD peak increased and specific surface area decreased. As the indium concentration of the raw material solution increased from 40 to 350 g/l, the average particle size of the powder gradually increased from 20 to 60 nm, yet the particle size distribution appeared more irregular, the intensity of a XRD peak increased and spe-cific surface area decreased. As the inlet speed of solution increased from 2 to 5 cc/min., the average particle size of the powder decreased and the particle size distribution became more homogeneous. In case of the inlet speed of 10 cc/min, the average particle size was larger and the particle size distribution was much irregular compared with the inlet speed of 5 cc/min. As the inlet speed of solution was 50 cc/min, the average particle size was smaller and microstructure of the powder was less solid compared with the inlet speed of 10 cc/min. The intensity of a XRD peak and the variation of specific area of the powder had the same tendency with the variation of the average par-ticle size.

A numerical study has been done on the evolution of particle size distribution in particle laden high temperature jet flows undergoing convection, diffusion, thermophoresis and coagulation. The dynamic behavior of these particles have been modelled by approximating the particle size distribution by a lognormal function throughout the process and the moments of the particle size distribution have been used to solve the general dynamic equation. The size distributions of spherical particles in the radial and axial direction have been obtained including the effect of buoyancy. Of particular interests are the variations of geometric mean diameter, number concentration and polydispersity. Results show that buoyancy significantly alters the size distribution in both axial and radial direction. One dimensional analysis for non-spherical particles has also been done and the results have been compared with the existing experimental data.
The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of particle size of sediment on adsorption of fluoride. Particle size is classified as sand, silt and clay. Adsorption equilibrium time, adsorption isotherms and the effect of pH were investigated through batch tests. The $pH_{pzc}$ of sand, silt, clay was respectively 6, 8, 4.5 and AEC (anion exchange capacity) was highest in silt, respectively 0.0095, 0.0224, $0.014meq\;g^{-1}$. Adsorption of fluoride on the sediment was in equilibrium within 300 minutes from all particle size. The experimental data of isotherms at various pH were well explained by Freundlich equation. As the experimental results of the effect of pH, the adsorption efficiency of sand and silt were reduced after the $pH_{pzc}$. However, the adsorption efficiency of clay was maintained after the $pH_{pzc}$, and decreased rapidly higher than pH 12.
The properties of rice were studied, and 8 rice flour cultivars were used to study the effect of particle size on the physicochemical properties, color value, RVA viscosities, water absorption index (WAI), and water solubility index (WSI) of rice flours. The mean particle size by the 3 particle size classification of 150 mesh, 200 mesh, and 250 mesh was, $90.75{\mu}m$, $60.73{\mu}m$, $39.94{\mu}m$, respectively. Thai rice had the highest amylose content and Samkwang rice had the lowest amylose content. Protein content of rice flours prepared was decreased as the particle size of rice flour decreased. In terms of color values, the L-value and the a-value of rice flour were increased as the particle size of rice flours decreased, while the b-value was decreased as the particle size of rice flours decreased. Using a rapid visco analyzer (RVA), the initial pasting temperature of Thai rice cultivar was found to be the highest; the peak viscosities of Sunpum cultivar and Misomi cultivar, and Samkwang rice were higher than those of other rice flours. The water absorption index and water solubility index were increased as the particle size of rice flour decreased. In order to use processed rice flour for the development of processed foods, proper characteristics of the cultivars and particle size should be considered.
