The centrifugal oil purifier is used in ships for purifying the engine lubrication oil. The momentum needed for the rotation of the cylindrical chamber is obtained by jet injections. The dust particles in the oil are separated by the centrifugal forces moving to the inner wall of the rotating cylindrical chamber body. The dust particles are eliminated when the particles are adsorbed onto the surface of the inner wall of the chamber body. The flow characteristics and the physical behaviours of particles in this centrifugal oil purifier have been investigated numerically and the filtration efficiencies have been evaluated. For the calculations, a commercial code has been used and the SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model has been adopted. The MRF (Multiple Reference Frame) method has been introduced to consider the rotating effect of the flows. Under various variables, such as particle size, particle density and rotating speed, the filtration efficiencies have been evaluated. It has been verified that the filtration efficiency is increased with the increments of the particle size, the particle density and the rotating speed of the cylindrical chamber.
Quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) has long been considered to improve our understanding of soil productivity, soil carbon dynamics, and soil quality. And also SOC could contribute as a major soil management factor for prescribing fertilizers and controlling of soil erosion and runoff. Reducing tillage intensity has been recommended to sequester SOC into soil. On the other hand, determination of traditional SOC could barely identify the tillage practices effect. Physical soil fractionation has been reported to improve interpretation of soil tillage practices impact on SOC dynamics. However, most of these researches were focused onupland soils and few researches were conducted on paddy soils. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate paddy soil tillage impact on SOC by physical soil fractionation. Soils were sampled in conventional-tillage (CT), partial-tillage (PT), no-tillage (NT), and shallow-tillage (ST)plots at the National Institute of Crop Science research farm. Samples were obtained at the three sampling depth with 7.5-cm increment from the surface and were sieved with 0.25- and 0.053-mm screen. Soil organic carbon was determined by wet combustion method. Significant difference of SOC contentwas found among sampling soil depth and soil particle size. SOC content tended to increase at the ST plot with increasing size of soil particle fraction. We conclude that quantifying soil organic carbon by physical soil particle fractionation could improve understanding of SOC dynamics by soil tillage practices.
This work is a fundamental study for applying hybrid process coupling adsorption with microfiltration to waste-water treatment. Phenol was separated by adsorption on powdered activated carbon, adsorbed phenol with activated carbon was separated by microfiltration. As the particle size in suspension increased, filtration resistance decreased, and effect of particle concentration on resistance was less pronounced. The rate of uptake was greatly dependent on the degree of phenol loading. For a smaller amounts of activated carbon, the change of permeate concentration before break point and phenol loading with time were steeper than in the case of large amounts. Permeate concentration before break point decreased with decreasing particle size, this could be due to the increase of outer surface of particle and film mass transfer coefficient.
Dispersion behavior of the slurries consisted of bimodal-type AlN powders was examined in non-aqueous solvent system. Azotropic solvent system and copolymer acidic dispersant were applied to the slurries. Measurements of the sedimentation height and the viscosity of the each slurry, and the test of particle size distribution of the each powder sample were conducted as examinations for the dispersion behavior at the various dispersant contents. The bimodal-type particle size distribution was continued after addition of the dispersant and small particle portions were increased as the dispersant content increases. The density of the green sheet was also increased as the dispersant content increases and a green density of $2.114\;g/cm^3$ was obtained at the sample prepared from 2.4 wt% dispersant content. The increase of large particle portions resulted in the surface defects of the green sheets.

The effects of latex particle size, basis weight of base paper and coating color concentration on the printing quality of coated paper were investigated. Coating colors were prepared with five types of latexes having different particle sizes. Coated papers were produced with high solid coating colors and with low solid coating colors in a industrial coater, respectively. In high solid coating colors, rheology modifier was used and GCC content was high. It was concluded that, in order to control binder migration and hence print mottle, latex particle sizes shall be controlled as well as formation, sizing degree and roughness of basis paper.

The objective of the this study is to find the breakage index and changes in permeability of Bottom ash from thermoelectric power plants in Korea. Bottom ash was crushed by compaction according to compaction energy from 0 to $1661.4\;kN/m^2$. The particle size distribution was estimated by sieve analysis. The various breakage indexes were used for analyzing the change in particle size distribution and effect of compaction energy. In the result, breakage indexes were increased as compaction energy and initial upper 4.75 mm diameter ratio, but values and tendencies of breakage indexes appeared in different as calculation method of breakage indexes. The coefficient of permeability was decreased with particle breakage, but decreasing ratio of permeability was very small. Bottom ash has a higher permeability than the weathered soil and it is considered high usability as a permeable materials.

In order to satisfy stringent future emission regulation in diesel engines, systematic approaches to mitigate the harmful exhaust emissions were developed, such as engine hardware, fuel injection equipment, engine control, and after-treatment system. In this study, to improve the nano-particle and NOx emissions from a state-of-the-arts diesel engine, effect of various EGR and fuel injection pressure with combustion analysis were evaluated. Size-resolved nano-particle and NOx emissions showed trade-off characteristics with various EGR rate and increment of fuel injection pressure.

The purpose of this study was to improve the stability and the processing property of vitamin C. Vitamin C was coated according to particle size(80-100 mesh, 100-140 mesh) and mixing ratio(1:1.6, 1:2.5, 1:3(w/w)) with coating solution(8% Zein-DP, 6% HPMC-FCC), and then the quality characteristics of fluidized bed micro coated vitamin C were investigated. The coating efficiency and the thickness of coating film were higher in $80{\sim}100$ mesh particle than in $100{\sim}140$ mesh particles, and coating efficiency was decreased as the coating material was increased. The distribution range of particle was more narrow in mixing ratio of 1:3(w/w) than in the other. DPPH radical scavenging activity was not affected by the particle size and the mixing ratio. There was no difference between the coating materials in terms of the quality characteristics. The optimum coating condition for fluidized bed micro-coating of vitamin C powder was selected as the particle size of $80{\sim}100$ mesh and the mixing ratio with coating solution of 1:3(w/w).

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the particle size (PS) of alfalfa hay (AH) and soybean hull (SH) on milk production of dairy cows and the population of major cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen. Eight lactating Holstein cows, averaging $590{\pm}33\;kg$ BW and $47{\pm}13$ days in milk (DIM), were assigned in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement of treatments: alfalfa hay particle size (fine vs. coarse) combined with soy hull (zero or substituted as 50% of AH). The cows were fed diets formulated according to NRC (2001). Physically effective factor (pef) and physically effective fiber (peNDF) contents of diets increased by increasing AH particle size and inclusion of SH in the diets (p<0.01). Dry matter intake was not significantly affected by treatments but intake of peNDF was increased marginally by increasing the PS of AH (p = 0.08) and by SH inclusion (p<0.01) in the diets. Milk production was increased by feeding diets containing SH (p = 0.04), but it was not affected by the dietary PS. Milk fat content was increased by increasing AH particle size (p = 0.03) and decreased by SH substitution for a portion of AH (p<0.01). The numbers of total bacteria and cellulolytic species were not affected by PS of AH or by SH. F. succinogenes was the most abundant species in the rumen followed by R. albus and R. flavefaciens (p<0.01). This study showed that SH cannot replace the physically effective fiber in AH having either coarse or fine particle size. In diets containing SH, increasing of diet PS using coarse AH can maintain milk fat content similar to diets without SH. Particle size and peNDF content of diets did not affect the number of total or fibrolytic bacteria in the rumen.

Hollow center cracked disc (HCCD) in Brazilian test was modelled numerically to study the crack propagation in the pre-cracked disc. The pre-existing edge cracks in the disc models were considered to investigate the crack propagation and coalescence paths within the modelled samples. The effect of particle size on the hollow center cracked disc (HCCD) in Brazilian test were considered too. The results shows that Failure pattern is constant by increasing the ball diameter. Tensile cracks are dominant mode of failure. These crack initiates from notch tip, propagate parallel to loading axis and coalescence with upper model boundary. Number of cracks increase by decreasing the ball diameter. Also, tensile fracture toughness was decreased with increasing the particle size. In this research, it is tried to improve the understanding of the crack propagation and crack coalescence phenomena in brittle materials which is of paramount importance in the stability analyses of rock and concrete structures, such as the underground openings, rock slopes and tunnel construction.
