  • Hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloy is used much to automatic parts and material for the electronic parts because of the low coefficient of thermal expansion, superior thermal stability and superior wear resistance. In this work, A390 alloy specimens were fabricated for control of the Si particle size by various processes, such as spray-casting, permanent mold-casting and squeeze-casting. To minimize the effect of microporosity of the specimens, hot extrusion was carried out under equal condition. Each specimens were evaluated tensile properties at room temperature and thermal expansion properties in the range from room temperature to 400$^{\circ}C$. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the spray-cast and extruded specimens which have fine and well distributed Si particles were improved greatly compare to the permanent mold-cast and extruded ones. Specimens which have finer Si particles showed higher ultimate tensile strength and elongation than those having large Si particle size, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the specimens increased linearly with Si particle size. In case of the repeated high temperature exposures, thermal expansion properties of the spray-cast and extruded specimens were found to be more stable than those of the others due to the effect of fine and well distributed Si particles.

  • The physicochemical properties of the lactic acid fermented rice flour prepared using ABT-L(mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bacillus longum, Streptococcus thermophilus) were investigated. The efficiency of deproteinizing of lactic acid fermentated rice was higher than soaking fermented rice. The structural properties of lactic acid fermented rice flour showed slightly decreased inner particle size but maintained regular structural form. Molar mass and molar size after being treated with soaking or lactic acid fermentation were decreased. Amylograms except for pasting temperature of lactic acid fermented rice flours or soaking fermented rice flours were more significantly decreased than the control sample. The ratio of flours passed through 100 mesh and 150 mesh sieves of lactic acid fermented rice flours were higher than soaking fermented rice flours. Lactic acid fermented rice flours being passed through 100 mesh sieves showed finer particle flours than those treated with soaking. These results showed that lactic acid fermentation, which can have a high efficiency on the deproteinizing of rice, contributed to the changes of particle size and its distribution of rice flour.

  • Common bulking agents in composting system include woody materials such as sawdust and woodchips. These bulking agents are mainly used for the purpose of the proper control of C/N ratio and moisture content in the composting. The topic for the effect on air permeability of bulking agents has far received relatively little attention in the composting field. This study investigated the effect of bulk density, moisture content, air-filled porosity, particle size and air flow rate on air permeability of several mixture ratios of sawdust and woodchip bulking agent. Increasing the moisture contents, the air-filled porosity was decreased and the particle size was increased for all kinds of bulking agent mixtures. Especially, with the increasing of mixing ratio of woodchip, these effects were sharply magnified. The air permeability respond to air-filled porosity was very similar to that for moisture content which was anticipated the linear relationship between air-filled porosity and moisture content. Above the region of moisture content 0.25 or 0.43(d.b.)(20 or 30% w.b.), the pressure drop decreased even though air-filled pore spaces were filling with water. Especially, to the particle size of 5 mm the pressure drop was decreased exponentially, so the air permeability was dramatically improved. By the water had the role of binding of the small particles, the macropores less resistances to air flow were created in the matrix. The effect of particle size on air permeability was much stronger than that of air-filled porosity or moisture content. And it is needed the preparing of initial particle size above 5 mm for efficient composting.

  • Granular media filtration is used almost universally as the last particle removal process in conventional water treatment plants. Therefore, superb particle removal efficiency is needed during this process to ensure a high quality of drinking water. However, every particle can not be removed during granular media filtration. Besides the pattern of particle attachment is different depending on physicochemical aspects of particles and suspension. Filtration experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale filter using spherical glass beads with a diameter of 0.55 mm as collectors. A single type of particle suspension (Min-U-Sil 5) and pH control was used to destabilize particles. The operating conditions were similar to those of standard media filtration practice: a filtration velocity of 5 m/h. More favorable particles, i.e., particles with smaller surface charge, were well attached to the collectors especially during the early stage of filtration. This selective attachment of the lower charged particles caused the zeta potential distribution (ZPD) of the effluent to move to a more negative range. On the other hand, the ZPD of the effluent did not keep moving from less negative to more negative during the later stages of filtration, and this result was thought to be caused by two reasons: ripening effects and the detachment of flocs.

  • Nickel powders were synthesized by the hydrazine reduction of nickel chloride solution containing ammonia in DEA solutions. The size distribution of nickel powders were investigated as a function of ammonia concentration, hydrazine concentration and the mixed composition ratio of diethanolammine (DEA) and triethanolammine (TEA). Nickel powders with the size in submicron range were obtained at $185^{\circ}C$ for 45 minutes by hydrazine reduction of nickel chloride solution in DEA solutions. The hydrazine concentrations showed significant effects on the particle size and shape distribution of nickel powders under $NH_3/Ni^{2+}$ molar ratio of 2.0 condition. As the mixed volume ratio of TEA and DEA increased, nickel powders with relatively larger particle size and low agglomeration were obtained. Nickel powders with particle size in the ranged from 0.4 to $0.9\;{\mu}m$ were obtained at the 50 $vol.%$ of TEA.

  • On the basis of growth mechanism proposed by recent work, partile of barium titanyl oxalate was controlled by aging in water. From aging at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours, uniform particles of 0.3 ${\mu}$m were obtained. During aging, abnormal particle growth was observed, which were thought to be caused by impurities in water. With increase of aging time and temperature, particle grows more, and differential growth was promoted. In aging for long time, grown particles were cracked.

  • The effect of the particle size of perlite and irrigation amount on the growth, root activity and mineral competition of tomato was investigated in a recycling system. The particle sizes used were small (SPP, øl∼2 mm), medium (MPP, ø2∼3 mm), (LPP. ø4∼5 mm). Plant height, fresh weight and dry weight of tomato at the earlier growth stage were good at 3.0 L/day in MPP and LPP, but these were not significantly affected by irrigation amount in MPP, Fruit number, weight and yield increased at 1.5 L/day in SPP and 3.0 L/day at MPP or LPP, Deformed fruits tended to increase at higher irrigation amounts regardless of particle size. Root activity increased with increasing particle size with higher irrigation amount during early stage after transplanting, but remarkably decreased at 3.0 L/day in SPP as compared with the others at 100 days. Mineral contents of plants after harvest were higher at MPP and LPP than SPP, but were highest at 3.0 L/day in LPP. In conclusion, it was regarded that tomato growth in a recycling system was optimal at MPP or LPP with irrigation amount of B.0 L/day.

  • The purpose of this research is to develop the model of pressure drop per unit pipe length due to the turbulence modulations in particle-laden flows which can be applied to various fluid conditions. The wake behind a particle, particle size, loading ratio and density difference between two phases of particle-laden flow was considered. The frictional pressure drop was modeled with the force balance in control volume. The numerical results show good agreements with available experimental data and the model success-fully predicted the mechanism of the pressure drop in particle-laden flows.

  • In this study, we fabricated $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ hard magnetic powders with various sizes via spray drying combined with reduction-diffusion process. Spray drying is widely used to produce nearly spherical particles that are relatively homogeneous. Thus, the precursor particles were prepared by spray drying using the aqueous solution containing Nd salts, Fe salts and boric acid with the target stoichiometric composition of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$. The mean particle sizes of the spray-dried powders are in the range from one to seven micrometer, which are adjusted by controlling the concentrations of precursor solutions. After debinding the as-prepared precursor particles, ball milling was also conducted to control the particle sizes of Nd-Fe-B oxide powders. The resulting particles with different sizes were subjected to subsequent treatments including hydrogen reduction, Ca reduction and washing for CaO removal. The size effect of Nd-Fe-B oxide particles on the formation of $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase and magnetic properties was investigated.

  • Actual trends in automotive industry lead to an increase use of lightweight structures imposing the need for high strength aluminum alloys with complex shape. In the electromagnetic stirring process, it has many merits which are the exact control ability about material processing and a good point of the protection of environment comparison with the mechanical stirring. The interface of cells consisting of primary particle formed by the electromagnetic stirring due to particle regrowth during cooling the alloy. By electromagnetic stirring process, the microstructure of material has a good point, also it can control the material processing exactly.
