In this study, we developed nonvolatile residue (NVR) real-time monitoring system to measure the nonvolatile residue particle in ultra pure water (UPW). This device has a capability of measuring 4 different channels, i.e., 10 nm, 30 nm, 50 nm, and 100 nm. Until now, the light scattering method to detect RAE(residue after evaporation) was the only choice. However, this method can detect RAE larger than ca. 50 nm. In ultra pure water, RAE particles are usually very small and hard to detect with conventional laser scattering devices. To detect very small RAEs, a new system is developed and tested. The system consists of an atomizer that generates RAE particles and a four channel condensation particle counter (CPC). During the several months' operation in manufacturing line, the system was successfully tested and showed reliable results.
Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are widely used in systems requiring high control precision, efficiency, and reliability. Predicting the remaining useful life (RUL) with health monitoring of PMSMs prevents catastrophic failure and ensures reliable operation of system. In this study, a model-based method for predicting the RUL of PMSMs using phase current and vibration signals is proposed. The proposed method includes feature selection and RUL prediction based on a particle filter with a degradation model. The Paris-Erdogan model describing micro fatigue crack propagation is used as the degradation model. An experimental set-up to conduct accelerated life test, capable of monitoring various signals was designed in this study. Phase current and vibration data obtained from an accelerated life test of the PMSMs were used to verify the proposed approach. Features extracted from the data were clustered based on monotonicity and correlation clustering, respectively. The results identify the effectiveness of using the current data in predicting the RUL of PMSMs.
Nowadays, railway system plays a significant role in transportation, conveying cargo, passengers, minerals, grains, and so forth. Railway ballasted track is a conventional railway track as can be seen all over the world. Ballast, located underneath the sleepers, is the most important elements on ballasted track, which has many functions and requires routine maintenance. Ballast needs to be maintained frequently to prevent rail buckling, settlement, misalignment so that ballast has to be modelled accurately. Continuum model was introduced to model granular material and was extended in ballast. However, ballast is a heterogeneous material with highly nonlinear behaviour. Hence, ballast could not be modelled accurately in continuum model due to the discontinuities nature and material degradation of ballast. Discrete element modelling (DEM) is proposed as an alternative approach that provides insight into constitutive model, realistic particle, and contact algorithm between each particle. DEM has been studied in many recent decades. However, there are limitations due to the high computational time and memory consumption, which cause the lack of using in high range. This paper presents a review of recent ballast modelling with benefits and drawbacks. Ballast particles are illustrated either circular, circular crump, spherical, spherical crump, super-quadric, polygonal and polyhedral. Moreover, the gaps and limitations of previous studies are also summarized. The outcome of this study will help the understanding into different ballast modelling and particle. The insight information can be used to improve ballast modelling and monitoring for condition-based track maintenance.

In this study, we have developed a real-time monitoring device for measuring PM10 and PM2.5 of ambient aerosol particles. The real-time PM monitor (SENTRY Dust Monitor) uses the optical scattering method and has 16 channels in particle size. The laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the developed SENTRY Dust Monitor. Arizona Test Dust particles were used as test particles in the laboratory test and the field test was carried out at the Jongno-gu Observatory in Seoul. The measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations obtained by SENTTRY Dust Monitor were compared with Grimm Dust Monitor (Model 1.108) and a beta ray gauge. It was shown that the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations obtained by SENTRY Dust Monitor agree well with that of the reference devices. Based on the results obtained in this study, it could be concluded that the SENTRY Dust Monitor can be used as a PM monitoring device for real-time monitoring of the ambient aerosols.

In this study, the performance of a real-time micro telescopic monitoring system is evaluated, in which an artificial neural network is adopted for the diagnoses of vibratory bodies, such as solid piping system or machinery. The structural vibration was measured by a non-contact remote sensing method, in which images of a high-speed high-definition camera were used. The structural vibration data that can be obtained by the PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique were used for training the neural network. The structures of the neural network are dynamically changed and their performances are evaluated for the constructed diagnosis system. Optimized structures of the neural network are proposed for real-time diagnosis for the piping system. It was experimentally verified that the performances of the neural network used for real-time monitoring are influenced by the types of the vibration data, such as minimum, maximum and average values of the vibration data. It concludes that the time-mean values are most appropriate for monitoring the piping system.
Pulsed laser-based optical sensor monitoring systems for real time microplastic particle counting are proposed and developed in this study. To develop our real time monitoring system, we used a 450 nm pulsed laser and a photomultiplier with very high quantum efficiency. First, we demonstrated that the microplastic particle counting system could detect standard micro bead samples of 100, 250, and $500{\mu}m$ in river water. We then performed research concerning pulsed laser-based optical spectral sensor systems for real time microplastic monitoring. Additionally, we demonstrated that the real time microplastic remote monitoring system using LoRa communications could detect microplastic in the tap water resource protection area.

To investigate the characteristics of fine particles and the relationships between pollutant concentrations and long-range transport patterns in Asia area, continuous every 6-day sampling (case 1) and an intensive field sampling (case 2) had been carried out between March 1998 and July 1999 at Taean, Korea. Anionic ($Cl^{-}$, ${NO_{3}}^{-}$, ${SO_{4}}^{2-}$) and Cationic ($Na^+$, ${NH_{4}}^{ +}, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ particle were analyzed. The major objective of this study is to investigate the relationships between the chemical compounds of $PM_{2.5}$ and the long-range transport patterns during intensive sampling period.

A Transient Differential Mobility Particle Spectrometer (TR-DMPS) with a short response time was recently developed to monitor high concentration of ultrafine particles emitted from vehicles. To investigate the availability of the TR-DMPS for monitoring transient roadside aerosols, the number size distribution of ultrafine particles was monitored at the Cheongnyangni roadside in Seoul on March 23, 2007 together with a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). The roadside aerosols were monitored every 5 min and 0.1 sec by using the SMPS and the TR-DMPS, respectively. The concentration of ultrafine particles at the roadside was highly fluctuated for a short duration. From the comparison of particle number concentrations and size distributions between two instruments, it was confirmed that the SMPS provided fairly good time-averaged number size distribution although it did not follow rapid change of particle number concentration at the roadside. The TR-DMPS quickly responded to a rapid change of particle number concentration due to abrupt traffic flow. However, the TR-DMPS frequently showed electrical noise events, resulting in underestimated particle contamination. A more stable operation of the TR-DMPS is needed in application of roadside aerosol monitoring.
The distribution of ambient air particles varies according to climate, industries, and other sources. In this study, ambient air particles (less than 12.1 ${\mu}m$) were monitored from February to August, 2007 as 12 different fractions sorted by a cascade impactor. Particles in the size range from 0.33 ${\mu}m$ to 0.76 ${\mu}m$ comprised the main fraction of ambient air particles in Seoul, Korea. On the day of an Asian dust event, the particle fraction size increased to 1.25~2.5 ${\mu}m$. The different sized particle fractions were also monitored for metals and were found to contain toxic heavy metals including Pb, Cd, Hg, Cr and As. Particle preparations were significantly cytotoxic when exposed to cultured BEAS-2B cells. Microarray analysis of the treated cells indicated a significant up-regulation of a number of genes associated with oxidative stress, including metallothionein, heme oxygenase-1, heat shock protein 70, and NAD(P)H dehydrogenase-1.
