  • In an Information Retrieval System(IRS) based on an inverted file as a file structure it is possible to retrieve related documents when the searcher know the complete words of searching fields. however, there are many cases in which the searcher may not know the complete words but a partial string of words with which to search. In this case, if the searcher can search indexes that include the known partial string, it is possible to retrieve related documents. Futhermore, when the retrieved documents are few, we need a method to find all documents having indexes which include known the partial string. To satisfy these requests, the searcher should be able to construct a query formulation that uses the term truncation method. Also the IRS should have an electronic dictionary that can support a truncated search term. This paper designs and implements an electronic dictionary(ED) structure to support a truncation search efficiently. The ED guarantees very fast and constant searching time for searching a term entry and the inversely alphabetized entry of it, regardless of the number of inserted words. In order to support a truncation search efficiently, we use the Trie structure and in order to accommodate fast searching time we use a method using array. In the searching process of a truncated term, we can reduce the searching time by minimizing the length of string to be expanded.

  • HTML is mostly stored in native file systems instead of specialized repositories such as a database. Like HTML, XML, the standard for the exchange and the representation of data in the Internet, is mostly resident on native file systems. However. since XML data is irregular and verbose, the disk space and the network bandwidth are wasted compared to those of regularly structured data. To overcome this inefficiency of XML data, the research on the compression of XML data has been conducted. Among recently proposed XML compression techniques, some techniques do not support querying compressed data, while other techniques which support querying compressed data blindly encode data values using predefined encoding methods without considering the types of data values which necessitates partial decompression for processing range queries. As a result, the query performance on compressed XML data is degraded. Thus, this research proposes an XML compression technique which supports direct and efficient evaluations of queries on compressed XML data. This XML compression technique adopts an encoding method, called dictionary encoding, to encode each tag of XML data and applies proper encoding methods for encoding data values according to the inferred types of data values. Also, through the implementation and the performance evaluation of the XML compression technique proposed in this research, it is shown that the implemented XML compressor efficiently compresses real-life XML data lets and achieves significant improvements on query performance for compressed XML data.

  • Even though information in many languages other than English is quickly increasing, English is still playing the role of the lingua franca and being accounted for the largest proportion on the web. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the key features and differences between "information searching behavior using mother tongue as a search language" and "information searching behavior using English as a search language" of users who are non-mother tongue speakers of English to acquire more diverse and abundant information. This study conducted the experiment on the web searching which is applied in concurrent think-aloud method to examine the information searching behavior and the cognitive process in Korean search and English search through the twenty-four undergraduate students at a private university in South Korea. Based on the qualitative data, this study applied the frequency analysis to web search pattern under search language. As a result, it is active, aggressive and independent information searching behavior in Korean search, while information searching behavior in English search is passive, submissive and dependent. In Korean search, the main features are the query formulation by extract and combine the terms from various sources such as users, tasks and system, the search range adjustment in diverse level, the smooth filtering of the item selection in search engine results pages, the exploration and comparison of many items and the browsing of the overall contents of web pages. Whereas, in English search, the main features are the query formulation by the terms principally extracted from task, the search range adjustment in limitative level, the item selection by rely on the relevance between the items such as categories or links, the repetitive exploring on same item, the browsing of partial contents of web pages and the frequent use of language support tools like dictionaries or translators.

  • This paper presents a hierarchical structuring method for the multidimensional type inheritance indices (MD-TIXs) that support the processing of XML queries in XML databases. MD-TIX uses a multidimensional index structure for efficiently supporting ancestor-descendant explorations that involve both nested element and type inheritance hierarchies. However, In the case of a long Xpath, the building and maintenance of MD-TIX are very difficult because of index entry construction problem. So, we propose a type inheritance index hierarchy method for solving this difficulty. We first construct base indices that support direct relationship explorations between adjacent two types on a given Xpath, and then, based on these base indices, we construct hierarchically the derived indices that support indirect relationship explorations between any two types of Xpath until constructing one target index for supporting the full Xpath. And we also present an algorithm that efficiently constructs a partial index hierarchy for supporting given a set of sub-pathes explorations.

  • In general, there can be many reusable intermediate results due to the overlapped windows and periodic execution intervals among Multiple Continuous Queries (MCQ) on data streams. In this regard, we propose an efficient greedy algorithm for a global query plan construction, called GAGPC. GAGPC first decides an execution cycle and finds the maximal Set(s) of Related execution Points (SRP). Next, GAGPC constructs a global execution plan to make MCQ share common join-fragments with the highest benefit in each SRP. The algorithm suggests that the best plan of the same continuous queries may be different according to not only the existence of common expressions, but the size of overlapped windows related to them. It also reflects to reuse not only the whole but partial intermediate results unlike previous work. Finally, we show experimental results for the validation of GAGPC.

  • Database Shard is a technique that can be queried and stored by dividing one logical table into multiple databases horizontally. In order to analyze the shard data with aggregate or analysis functions, a process is required that integrates partial results on each shard database. In this paper, we introduce the design and implementation of a distributed processing system for aggregation and analysis on the CUBRID Shard distributed database, which is an open source database management system. The implemented system can accelerate the analysis onto multiple shards of partitioned tables; it shows efficient aggregation on shard distributed databases compared to stand-alone databases.

  • Background: Postoperative pain management is crucial for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). There have been many recent clinical trials on post-TKA peripheral nerve block; however, they have reported inconsistent findings. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to comprehensively analyze studies on post-TKA analgesia to provide evidence-based clinical suggestions. Methods: We performed a computer-based query of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science to retrieve related articles using neurothe following search terms: nerve block, nerve blockade, chemodenervation, chemical neurolysis, peridural block, epidural anesthesia, extradural anesthesia, total knee arthroplasty, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and others. After quality evaluation and data extraction, we analyzed the complications, visual analogue scale (VAS) score, patient satisfaction, perioperative opioid dosage, and rehabilitation indices. Evidence was rated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. Results: We included 16 randomized controlled trials involving 981 patients (511 receiving peripheral nerve block and 470 receiving epidural block) in the final analysis. Compared with an epidural block, a peripheral nerve block significantly reduced complications. There were no significant between-group differences in the postoperative VAS score, patient satisfaction, perioperative opioid dosage, and rehabilitation indices. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that the peripheral nerve block is superior to the epidural block in reducing complications without compromising the analgesic effect and patient satisfaction. Therefore, a peripheral nerve block is a safe and effective postoperative analgesic method with encouraging clinical prospects.

  • This paper proposes a metrics for example matching under the example-based machine translation for English-Korean machine translation. Our metrics served as similarity measure is based on edit-distance algorithm, and it is employed to retrieve the most similar example sentences to a given query. Basically it makes use of simple information such as lemma and part-of-speech information of typographically mismatched words. Edit-distance algorithm cannot fully reflect the context of matched word units. In other words, only if matched word units are ordered, it is considered that the contribution of full matching context to similarity is identical to that of partial matching context for the sequence of words in which mismatching word units are intervened. To overcome this drawback, we propose the context-weighting scheme that uses the contiguity information of matched word units to catch the full context. To change the edit-distance metrics representing dissimilarity to similarity metrics, to apply this context-weighted metrics to the example matching problem and also to rank by similarity, we normalize it. In addition, we generalize previous methods using some linguistic information to one representative system. In order to verify the correctness of the proposed context-weighted metrics, we carry out the experiment to compare it with generalized previous methods.
