  • The vibration of elastically supported bidirectional functionally graded (BDFG) sandwich beams on an elastic foundation is investigated. The sandwich structure is composed of upper and lower layers of BDFG material and the core layer of isotropic material. Material properties of upper and lower layers are assumed to vary continuously along the length and thickness of the beam with a power-law function. Hamilton's principle is used to deduce the vibration equations of motion of the sandwich Timoshenko beam. Then, the partial differential equation of motion is spatially discretized into a time-varying ordinary differential equation in terms of Chebyshev differential matrices. The eigenvalue equation associated with the free vibration is formulated to study the influence of various slenderness ratios, material gradient indexes, thickness ratios, foundation and support spring constants on the vibration frequency of BDFG sandwich beams. The present method can provide researchers with deep insight into the impact of various geometric, material, foundation and support parameters on the vibration behavior of BDFG sandwich beam structures.

  • The natural frequencies of continuous systems depend on the governing partial differential equation and can be numerically estimated using the finite element method. The accuracy and convergence of the finite element method depends on the choice of basis functions. A basis function will generally perform better if it is closely linked to the problem physics. The stiffness matrix is the same for either static or dynamic loading, hence the basis function can be chosen such that it satisfies the static part of the governing differential equation. However, in the case of a rotating beam, an exact closed form solution for the static part of the governing differential equation is not known. In this paper, we try to find an approximate solution for the static part of the governing differential equation for an uniform rotating beam. The error resulting from the approximation is minimized to generate relations between the constants assumed in the solution. This new function is used as a basis function which gives rise to shape functions which depend on position of the element in the beam, material, geometric properties and rotational speed of the beam. The results of finite element analysis with the new basis functions are verified with published literature for uniform and tapered rotating beams under different boundary conditions. Numerical results clearly show the advantage of the current approach at high rotation speeds with a reduction of 10 to 33% in the degrees of freedom required for convergence of the first five modes to four decimal places for an uniform rotating cantilever beam.

  • We introduce a new concept of Stepanov weighted pseudo almost periodic functions of class r which have been established by recently in [20]. Furthermore, we study the uniqueness and existence of Stepanov weighted pseudo almost periodic mild solutions of partial neutral functional differential equations having the Stepanov pseudo almost periodic forcing terms on finite delay.

  • In this paper, we consider a doubly nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation $\frac{{\partial}{\beta}(u)}{{\partial}t}-{\Delta}_pu+f(x,t,u)=0$ in ${\Omega}{\times}[0,T]$, with Dirichlet boundary condition and initial data given. We prove the existence of a discrete approximate solution by means of the Rothe discretization in time method under some conditions on ${\beta}$, $f$ and $p$.

  • The aim of this paper is to investigate nonlinear dynamic responses of functionally graded composite beam resting on the nonlinear viscoelastic foundation subjected to moving mass with temperature rising. The non-linear strain-displacement relationship is considered in the finite strain theory and the governing nonlinear dynamic equation is obtained by using the Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then the governing equation is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The influences of temperature rising, material distribution parameter, nonlinear viscoelastic foundation parameters, magnitude and velocity of the moving mass on the nonlinear dynamic responses are investigated. Also, the buckling temperatures of the functionally graded beams based on the finite strain theory are obtained.

  • This paper presents nonlinear oscillations of a carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam subjected to lateral harmonic load with damping effect based on the modified couple stress theory. As reinforcing phase, three different types of single walled carbon nanotubes distribution are considered through the thickness in polymeric matrix. The non-linear strain-displacement relationship is considered in the von Kármán nonlinearity. The governing nonlinear dynamic equation is derived with using of Hamilton's principle. The Galerkin's decomposition technique is utilized to discretize the governing nonlinear partial differential equation to nonlinear ordinary differential equation and then is solved by using of multiple time scale method. The frequency response equation and the forced vibration response of the system are obtained. Effects of patterns of reinforcement, volume fraction, excitation force and the length scale parameter on the nonlinear responses of the carbon nanotube reinforced composite beam are investigated.

  • For a locus with two alleles (IA and IB), the frequencies of the alleles are represented by $$p=f(I^A)={\frac{2N_{AA}+N_{AB}}{2N}},\;q=f(I^B)={\frac{2N_{BB}+N_{AB}}{2N}}$$ where NAA, NAB and NBB are the numbers of IAIA, IAIB and IBIB respectively and N is the total number of populations. The frequencies of the genotypes expected are calculated by using p2, 2pq and q2. Choi defined the density and operator for the value of the frequency of one gene and found the adapted partial differential equation as a follow-up for the frequency of alleles and applied this adapted partial differential equation to several diploid model [1]. In this paper, we find adapted equations for the model for selection against recessive homozygotes and in case that the alley frequency changes after one generation of selection when there is no dominance. Also we consider the triploid model with three alleles IA, IB and i and determine whether six genotypes observed are in Hardy-Weinburg for equilibrium.

  • A finite element analysis for a rotating cantilever beam is presented in this study. Based on a dynamic modelling method using the stretch deformation instead of the conventional axial deformation, three linear partial differential equations are derived from Hamilton's principle. Two of the linear differential equations show the coupling effect between stretch and chordwise deformations. The other equation is an uncoupled one for the flapwise deformation. From these partial differential equations and the associated boundary conditions, are derived two weak forms: one is for the chordwise motion and the other is for the flapwise motion. The weak forms are spatially discretized with newly defined two-node beam elements. With the discretized equations or the matrix-vector equations, the behaviours of the natural frequencies are investigated for the variation of the rotating speed.

  • Numerical solution to linear bending analysis of circular plates is obtained by the method of harmonic differential quadrature (HDQ). In the method of differential quadrature (DQ), partial space derivatives of a function appearing in a differential equation are approximated by means of a polynomial expressed as the weighted linear sum of the function values at a preselected grid of discrete points. The method of HDQ that was used in the paper proposes a very simple algebraic formula to determine the weighting coefficients required by differential quadrature approximation without restricting the choice of mesh grids. Applying this concept to the governing differential equation of circular plate gives a set of linear simultaneous equations. Bending moments, stresses values in radial and tangential directions and vertical deflections are found for two different types of load. In the present study, the axisymmetric bending behavior is considered. Both the clamped and the simply supported edges are considered as boundary conditions. The obtained results are compared with existing solutions available from analytical and other numerical results such as finite elements and finite differences methods. A comparison between the HDQ results and the finite difference solutions for one example plate problem is also made. The method presented gives accurate results and is computationally efficient.

  • Let (M, g) be a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold of dimension n $\geq$ 3 with scalar curvature S, which is close to O. With conditions on a conformal invariant and scalar curvature of (M, g), we show that there exists a conformal metric (equation omitted), near g, whose scalar curvature (equation omitted) = 0 by gluing solutions of the corresponding partial differential equation on each bounded subsets $K_{i}$ with ∪$K_{i}$ = M.
