The loss of composite action at the hogging moment zone for a continuous composite girder reduces the girder stiffness and strength. This paper presents an experimental investigation of the use of an ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) slab at the hogging moment zone and a normal concrete (NC) slab at the sagging moment zone. The testing was conducted to verify the level of loading at which composite action is maintained at the hogging moment zone. Four two-span continuous composite girders were tested. The thickness of the UHPC varied between a half and a full depth of slab. The degree of shear connection at the hogging moment zone varied between full and partial. The experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of the UHPC slab to enhance the girder stiffness and maintain the composite action at the hogging moment zone at a load level much higher than the upper service load limit. To a lesser degree enhanced performance was also noted for the smaller thickness of the UHPC slab and partial shear connection at the hogging moment zone. Plastic analysis was conducted to evaluate the ultimate capacity of the girder which yielded a conservative estimation. Finite element (FE) modeling evaluated the girder performance numerically and yielded satisfactory results. The results indicated that composite action at the hogging moment zone is maintained for the degree of shear connection taken as 50% of the full composite action and use of UHPC as half depth of slab thickness.
The problem addressed in this study is how to analytically treat the partial composite action for wall panels. An equation, derived for wood-joist floor systems, which determines deflections for beams with partial composite action is introduced. The equation is applied to the calculation of the mid-span deflection for gypsum-sheathed, cold-formed steel was stud panels. The objective of this study is to properly reflect the influence of the following factors in the calculation of mid-span deflection for the panel: connection slip, local buckling, perforations in the stud web, and effects from joints in the sheathing. Predicted deflections based on an upper bound for connection rigidity were closest to experimental deflections.
The novel form of composite walling system consists of two skins of profiled steel sheeting with an in-fill of concrete. The behaviour of such walling under in-plane shear is important in order to utilise this system as shear elements in a steel framed building. Steel sheet-concrete interface governs composite action, overall behaviour and failure modes of such walls. This paper describes the finite element (FE) modelling of the shear behaviour of walls with particular emphasis on the simulation of steel-concrete interface. The modelling of complex non-linear steel-concrete interaction in composite walls is conducted by using different FE models. Four FE models are developed and characterized by their approaches to simulate steel-concrete interface behaviour allowing either full or partial composite action. Non-linear interface or joint elements are introduced between steel and concrete to simulate partial composite action that allows steel-concrete in-plane slip or out of plane separation. The properties of such interface/joint elements are optimised through extensive parametric FE analysis using experimental results to achieve reliable and accurate simulation of actual steel-concrete interaction in a wall. The performance of developed FE models is validated through small-scale model tests. FE models are found to simulate strength, stiffness and strain characteristics reasonably well. The performance of a model with joint elements connecting steel and concrete layers is found better than full composite (without interface or joint elements) and other models with interface elements. The proposed FE model can be used to simulate the shear behaviour of composite walls in practical situation.

This paper presents a nonlinear analysis technique with slip, the effects of slip modulus and composite action by shear connector on behavior and capacity in composite structure of sandwich system. As a results of this study, it proved that the slip modulus, in case of shear behavior, seldom influence load-resistance capacity such as yield and ultimate load, but in case of flexural behavior, it appropriately influence load-resistance capacity because of stress redistribution by slip. In case of flexural behavior, analysis result for perfect-composite results in over-estimation and perfect-slip results in under-estimation on behavior and capacity. Therefore, it is desirable to model steel-concrete interface with partial-composite. The effects of slip on behavior and capacity are less in case of positive composite than loosely composite, and it proved that composite action by shear connector improve the load-resistance capacity of this system.

This paper presents 3D nonlinear analysis considering the slip of composite section as well as the static load tests of PSC-Steel hybrid girders. According to the slip modulus, the nonlinear analysis shows that the behavior of hybrid girders could be divided into three parts as full-composite, partial-composite and non-composite. However, the experimental results show that the PSC-Steel hybrid girders with shear connectors take the part of partial composite action in ultimate load stage. In addition, the load test results give that stud shear connectors and welded reinforcements have contributed to improve the ultimate strength of hybrid girders for about $20\%$.

The objective of this test series was to determine shear load per unit length which causes a unit slip in the fastener joint. The shear load is one of major factors which reflect partial composite action for cold-formed steel wall stud panels. Test method used were based on the methods presented in the 1962 AISI Specification. According to the comparison with experimental strength, it is seen that the shear loads used in nominal axial strength predictions made acceptable results.

This study seeks to devise a design application for a beam structure with partially restrained composite connection to a CFT column. A cost-efficient and stable component is applied by adjusting the stiffness ratio of the column connection through partially restrained composite connection. Based on a review of the structure's stability, it was confirmed that in the case of a low-rise building as a moment frame, resistance without bracing is feasible because stiffness increased by virtue of the partial restrained composite connection by composite action. In the case of a high-rise building, lateral resistance load of moment frame was approximately 10% when proper partial restrained rate was at around 60%. With considerations related to economic efficiency, the partial restriction effect of the beam component was significantly activated by the uniform load, but that of the beam activated by concentrated load was not significantly indicative. The analysis indicated that 60% partial restrained girder at the connection was the most economical in the case of uniform load. It also showed that end moments can be reduced by approximately 25%.

In the composite beam subjected to the hogging moment it is very difficult to evaluate the influence of the reduction of slab stiffness due to cracks and their development on the horizontal shear behavior of shear connection. In this study, a 3D FE model is developed by which one can analyze the composite action in the composite beam subjected to the hogging moment. In this FE model, each structural member and shear connection are modeled as similar as possible to details of the composite beam. Bending behaviour, and composite action which could not be analyzed using the existing 1D or 2D FE model are investigated by the 3D model. Analysis results show that the reinforcement ratio and crack behaviour of the slab are main factors which exert a strong influence on the composite action. According to the analysis results about load-slip behavior, initial crack of slab and yielding of rebars have a influence on the slip stiffness of shear connection. The existing experimental results, that the design of partial interaction can be more efficient in designing of shear connection of the composite beams, are indirectly verified by the FE analysis.

Cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges are divided into three cross sections of non-composite, partially composite, and fully composite sections, according to their composite characteristics. The Korean provision for the partially and fully composite sections specifies general usage of the stud of shear connectors, whereas the one for the non-composite section specifies empirical usage of slab anchors. However, the actual behavior of the cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors is close not to the non-composite action, but to the partially composite action. Therefore analytical and experimental studies on partial composites of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors are performed in this study. Intial stiffness of the slab anchor is obtained by the experimental study for the first time, and the composite characteristic of simple-span and two-span continuous steel-plate girder bridges is investigated by the finite element analyses for the second time. Based on the obtained initial stiffness, the reduction effect of tensile stresses in the concrete-slab on the intermediate support of the continuous bridge is also considered herein.
Nailed joints, which are commonly used in Wooden structures, transmit loads from one member to another and induce partial composite actions between members. Long-term loads induce creep slip in nailed joints and affect load sharing and partial composite action, which may reduce joint stiffness. Two theoretical viscous-viscoelastic models were developed for nailed joints to predict creep behavior under long-term variable loads. Those models were also used to predict stiffness changes under long-term variable loads. The stiffness of nailed joint is defined as a Secant modulus which is called the joint modulus or slip modulus. Input data for the models are the results of constant load tests under three different load levels. To verify the models, nailed joints were also tested under two long-term variable load functions. The predictions of the models were very close to the experimental data. Therefore, the theoretical viscous-viscoelastic models and procedures developed in this study can be applied to predict creep slip and the changes in joint moduli of nailed joints under long-term variable loads.
