  • This study examined the features of maternal involvement in Korean children's early education and their relation to contextual variables and three forms of parental cognition. For this study 333 Korean mothers with 5 to 7 year-old children completed questionnaires that covered aspects such as demographical characteristics, three forms of involvement in their children's education, and three forms of parental cognition. Descriptive analysis indicated that mothers who were more involved in monitoring homework paid more monthly activity fees for supplementary classes and engaged more in cognitively stimulating activities at home. Financial investment in supplementary classes for children was not associated with engagement in cognitively stimulating activities at home. Stepwise regression analysis found that mothers who were more involved in monitoring their young childrens homework expressed higher aspirations for their childrens future occupation. Korean mothers who paid more for their child's supplementary classes had higher family incomes. Korean mothers who engaged more often in cognitively stimulating activities at home expressed higher parental self-efficacy, had a higher educational level, had a younger child, and had an earlier birth order or only child.

  • This study compared a number of related variables according to children's stress types using the data mining method. The sample population was taken from the Korean Youth Panel Survey (KYPS) data (2688, sixth-grade elementary students). The results of the decision tree model revealed that : (1) Parental expectations in terms of study, life satisfaction, self-esteem, parental attachment, aggression, the spousal relationship, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), and study related worries were all related to parent stress. (2) Life satisfaction, study related worries, admitting one's own misdeeds, gender, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), aggression, the spousal relationship, and a sense of alienation in the school were all related to appearance stress. (3) Study related worries, parental expectations in terms of study, aggression, life satisfaction, self-esteem, parental attachment, satisfying parental expectations, parental attachment, and teacher attachment were all related to academic stress. (4) A sense of alienation in the school, mixing with peers in the school, aggression, self-esteem, other cognition (one's own misdeeds), study related worries, parental abuse, and life satisfaction were all significantly related to friend stress. These results suggested that children's diverse conditions should be considered according to the stress types if we are to understand and cope with these stress types more efficiently.

The subjects were 748 students(male 323, female 425) who were currently enrolled at university located in Seoul. The instruments used for this study were Filial Obligation Scale(Cho, 2002), Parenting Beliefs Questionnaire, and Value of Children by Arnold et al.(1975, 2001). With regard to parental beliefs, family relation-oriented beliefs was relatively low in comparison with independence/autonomy-oriented beliefs, happiness-oriented beliefs, and cognition/knowledge-oriented beliefs. In addition, emotional value of children was relatively high in comparison with instrumental value of children. Also, male university students possessed a higher level of filial obligation. the level of cohabitation experience with their parents played a significant role in affecting the level of filial obligation. Unsurprisingly, a higher relation-oriented parental beliefs and emotional value of children demonstrated a higher level of filial obligation. There were also positive relationships between emotional value, instrumental value, and filial obligation. • As part of the Nutrition CRSP Mexico project conducted in rural villages in highland Mexico, this study examined whether nutritional factors, family characteristics, and the duration of schooling were associated with cognitive performances in 107 schoolers(53 boys and 54 girls) aged 8~10. Food intake was measured by recall, direct observation and weighment twice monthly over the course of a year. Families were characterized in terms of socioeconomic status and parental cognitive performance, education and aspiration. Dietary quality, but not energy intake, and anthropometry (wt-for-age, ht-for-age, head circumference) were significantly associated with cognitive test results for both verbal and performance measures. When the effect of SES is controlled using partial correlation, the relationships were substantially weakened. Sex differences were also found in response to nutritional deprivation. Among boys, dietary quality was the most important indicator of cognitive performance, while household economic conditions were more importantly associated with cognitive performance among girls. Participation in schooling was important for cognitive skille as it related to nutritional status.

As a result, their decision of adoption or self-nurture on their child was significantly affected by various factors. Among pregnancy-related factors, pregnancy recognition time was significantly different between two groups. Among personal factors, their age and cognition of parental role were important factors to differentiate two groups. In the analysis related with social resources, the self-nurture group had significantly higher experience and satisfaction on welfare service and lodging & boarding service compared to those of the adoption-choice group.
