The choice of input distribution in quantitative risk assessments modeling is of great importance to get unbiased overall estimates, although it is difficult to characterize them in situations where data available are too sparse or small. The present study is particularly concerned with accommodation of uncertainties commonly encountered in the practice of modeling. The authors applied parametric and non-parametric bootstrap simulation methods which consist of re-sampling with replacement, in together with the classical Student-t statistics based on the normal distribution. The implications of these methods were demonstrated through an empirical analysis of trade volume from the amount of chicken and pork meat imported to Korea during the period of 1998-2005. The results of bootstrap method were comparable to the classical techniques, indicating that bootstrap can be an alternative approach in a specific context of trade volume. We also illustrated on what extent the bias corrected and accelerated non-parametric bootstrap method produces different estimate of interest, as compared by non-parametric bootstrap method.

The dynamic stability of a single cam drive mechanism is investigated by an analytical approach. The nonlinear differential equation describing the motion of a single cam drive mechanism is linearized with respect to the imput power angle, and results a linear parametric differential equation. The instability region is examined by applying the harmonic balance method to linearized parametric equation having periodicity. Through the dynamic stability analysis of a single cam drive mechanism, it is observed that the parametric resonances exist and the instability regions tend to become wide as increasing the drive speed and follower mass.

Frame structures have been traditionally represented as an assembling of components, these last described within the beam theory framework. In the case of frames involving complex components in which classical beam theory could fail, 3D descriptions seem the only valid route for performing accurate enough analyses. In this work we propose a framework for frame structure analyses that proceeds by assembling the condensed parametric rigidity matrices associated with the elementary beams composing the beams involved in the frame structure. This approach allows a macroscopic analysis in which only the condensed degrees of freedom at the elementary beams interfaces are considered, while fine 3D parametric descriptions are retained for local analyses.
This paper proposes a novel cooperative localization method for distributed wireless networks in 3-dimensional (3D) global positioning system (GPS) denied environments. The proposed method, which is referred to as hybrid ellipsoidal variational algorithm (HEVA), combines the use of non-parametric belief propagation (NBP) and variational Bayes (VB) to benefit from both the use of the rich information in NBP and compact communication size of a parametric form. InHEVA, two novel filters are also employed. The first one mitigates non-line-of-sight (NLoS) time-of-arrival (ToA) messages, permitting it to work well in high noise environments with NLoS bias while the second one decreases the number of calculations. Simulation results illustrate that HEVA significantly outperforms traditional NBP methods in localization while requires only 50% of their complexity. The superiority of VB over other clustering techniques is also shown.

To explore an effective non-invasion medical imaging diagnostics approach for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), we propose a method based on adopting the multiple technologies with the multi-parametric data fusion, transfer learning, and multi-scale deep feature extraction. Firstly, to make full use of complementary and enhancing the contribution of different modalities viz. multi-parametric MRI images in the lesion diagnosis, we propose a data-level fusion strategy. Secondly, based on the fusion data as the input, the multi-scale residual neural network with SPP (Spatial Pyramid Pooling) is utilized for the discriminative feature representation learning. Thirdly, to mitigate the impact of the lack of training samples, we do the pre-training of the proposed multi-scale residual neural network model on the natural image dataset and the fine-tuning with the chosen multi-parametric MRI images as complementary data. The comparative experiment results on the dataset from the clinical cases show that our proposed approach by employing the multiple strategies achieves the highest accuracy of 0.847±0.023 in the classification problem on the HCC differentiation. In the problem of discriminating the HCC lesion from the non-tumor area, we achieve a good performance with accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and AUC (area under the ROC curve) being 0.981±0.002, 0.981±0.002, 0.991±0.007 and 0.999±0.0008, respectively.
Parametric design systems serve as powerful assistive tools in the design process by providing a flexible approach for the generation of a vast number of design alternatives. However, contemporary parametric design systems focus primarily on low-level engineering and structural forms, without an explicit means to also take into account high-level, cognitively motivated people-centred design goals. We present a precedent-based parametric design method that integrates people-centred design "precedents" rooted in empirical evidence directly within state of the art parametric design systems. As a use-case, we illustrate the general method in the context of an empirical study focusing on the multi-modal analysis of wayfinding behaviour in two large-scale healthcare environments. With this use-case, we demonstrate the manner in which: (1). a range of empirically established design precedents -e.g., pertaining to visibility and navigation- may be articulated as design constraints to be embedded directly within state of the art parametric design tools (e.g., Grasshopper); and (2). embedded design precedents lead to the (parametric) generation of a number of morphologies that satisfy people-centred design criteria (in this case, pertaining to wayfinding). Our research presents an exemplar for the integration of cognitively motivated design goals with parametric design-space exploration methods. We posit that this opens-up a range of technological challenges for the engineering and development of next-generation computer aided architecture design systems.
Recently lots of attention has been paid to gene set analysis for identifying differentially expressed gene-sets between two sample groups. Unlike earlier approaches, the gene set analysis enables us to find significant gene-sets along with their functional characteristics. For this reason, various novel approaches have been suggested lately for gene set analysis. As one of such, PAGE is a parametric approach that employs average difference (AD) as an expression metric to quantify expression differences between two sample groups and assumes that the distribution of gene scores is normal. This approach is preferred to non-parametric approach because of more effective performance. However, the metric AD does not reflect either gene expression intensities or variances over samples in calculating gene scores. Thus, in this paper, we investigate the usefulness of several other expression metrics for parametric gene-set analysis, which consider actual expression intensities of genes or their expression variances over samples. For this purpose, we examined three expression metrics, WAD (weighted average difference), FC (Fisher's criterion), and Abs_SNR (Absolute value of signal-to-noise ratio) for parametric gene set analysis and evaluated their experimental results.

Compared to the noise limits (CAN7) specified in ICAO Annex 16 for civil helicopters, the Lynx helicopter equipped with BERP blades has only 0.2 EPNdB margin in the approach case although it has more than 4 EPNdB margin in fly-over and take-off conditions. The objectives of the study described in this paper were to devise a low noise main rotor blade for the Lynx using UEAF combined with the high resolution airload model ACROT. A design requirement is that the new blade, KBERP (Korean BERP) blade should achieve a significant reduction in noise during approach(at least 6EPNdB margin) without any noise penalty in fly-over and take-off conditions and minimal performance penalty. It was decided to investigate a tip modification to the BERP blade, employing the twin vortex concept to reduce the BVI noise and to retain the excellent high speed performance characteristics of BERP. Through the parametric study, the KBERP blade with optimized twin vortices has at least a 9 EPNdB noise margin in approach flight condition with only a small penalty in fly-over and take-off conditions. The KBERP tip is thus a very cost effective wav to reduce BVI noise during approach.
We propose a permutation approach to the classic Behrens-Fisher problem of comparing two means in the presence of unequal variances. It is motivated by the observation that a paired test is valid whether or not the variances are equal. Rather than using a single arbitrary pairing of the data, we average over all possible pairings. We do this in both a parametric and nonparametric setting. When the sample sizes are equal, the parametric version is equivalent to referral of the unpaired t-statistic to a t-table with half the usual degrees of freedom. The derivation provides an interesting representation of the unpaired t-statistic in terms of all possible pairwise t-statistics. The nonparametric version uses the same idea of considering all different pairings of data from the two groups, but applies it to a permutation test setting. Each pairing gives rise to a permutation distribution obtained by relabeling treatment and control within pairs. The totality of different mean differences across all possible pairings and relabelings forms the null distribution upon which the p-value is based. The conservatism of this procedure diminishes as the disparity in variances increases, disappearing completely when the ratio of the smaller to larger variance approaches 0. The nonparametric procedure behaves increasingly like a paired t-test as the sample sizes increase.
The vertical forces in rail fasteners at areas of bridge transitions near the embankment and on the pier will occur due to different deformations of adjoining bridges caused by the trainloads. The up-lifting forces is not large problem in the blast track because the elasticity of blast and rail pad buffs up-lifting effect. But, it is likely to be difficult to ensure the serviceability of the railway and the safety of the fastener in the end in that concrete slab track consist of rail, fastener, and track in a single body, delivering directly the up-lifting force to the fastener if the deck is bended because of the end rotation of the overhang due to the vertical load. When the up-lifting force exceeds the clamp force of the fastener clip, the rail pad is out of fastener, which makes decrease the serviceability of the railway, such as noise and vibration. Furthermore, it is possible to reduce the safety of the track as the longitudinal resistance. This study is focused on guideline suggestion to decrease up-lifting force in the fastener adjacent to the civil joint of slab track of bridge throughout the parametric analysis between the vertical spring stiffness of the fastener as the material approach, the space of fastener adjacent to bridge transition, the rigidity of the girder as the geometrical approach and up-lifting force under the train load.
