In this paper, we present a new approach based on an elitist genetic algorithm for the task of aligning the position of a robot gripper using CCD cameras. The vision-based control scheme for the task of aligning the gripper with the desired position is implemented by image information. The relationship between the camera space location and the robot joint coordinates is estimated using a camera-space parameter modal that generalizes known manipulator kinematics to accommodate unknown relative camera position and orientation. To find the joint angles of a robot manipulator for reaching the target position in the image space, we apply an elitist genetic algorithm instead of a nonlinear least square error method. Since GA employs parallel search, it has good performance in solving optimization problems. In order to improve convergence speed, the real coding method and geometry constraint conditions are used. Experiments are carried out to exhibit the effectiveness of vision-based control using an elitist genetic algorithm with a real coding method.

The manipulability analysis of the parallel-type rolling mill proposed in Hong et al. [1] is re-visited. The parallel rolling mill uses two Stewart platforms in opposite direction for the generation of 6 degree-of-freedom motions of each roll. The objective of this new parallel rolling mill is to permit an integrated control of the strip thickness, strip shape, pair crossing angle, uniform wear of rolls, and tension of the strip. New forward/inverse kinematics problems, in contrast with [1], are formulated. The forward kinematics problem is defined as the problem of finding the roll-gap and the pair-crossing angle of two work rolls for given lengths of twelve legs. On the other hand, the inverse kinematics problem is defined as the problem of finding the lengths of twelve legs when the roll-gap, the pair-crossing angle, and the position and orientation of one work roll are given. The method of manipulability analysis used in this paper follows the spirit of [1]. But, because the rolling force and moment exerted from both upper and lower rolls have been included in the manipulability analysis, more accurate results than the use of a single platform can be achieved. Two. kinematic parameters, the radius of the base and the angle between two neighboring joints, are optimally designed by maximizing the global manipulability measure in the entire workspace.

Parallel robots are usually used for performing pick-and-place motion to increase productivity in high-speed environments. The present study proposes a high-speed parallel robot and a control approach to improve the tracking performance for the purpose of handling a solar cell. However, the target processes are not limited to the solar cell-handling field. Therefore, a delta-type parallel manipulator is designed, and a ball joint structure is specifically proposed to increase the allowed angle that would meet the required workspace. A control algorithm considering the synchronization between multiple joints in a closed-chain mechanism is also suggested to improve the tracking performance, where the tracking and synchronization errors are simultaneously considered. In addition, a prototype machine with the proposed ball joint is implemented. A satisfactory tracking performance is achieved by applying the proposed control algorithm, with a cycle time of 0.3 s for a 0.1 kg payload.
The multi-layer neural network possesses the desirable characteristics of parallel distributed processing and learning capacity, by which the uncertain variation of the parameters in the dynamically complex system can be handled adoptively. However the error back propagation algorithm that has been utilized popularly in the learning procedure of the mulfi-Jayer neural network has the significant limitations in the real application because of its slow convergence speed. In this paper, an approach to improve the convergence speed is proposed using the fuzzy logic that can effectively handle the uncertain and fuzzy informations by linguistic level. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulation of PUMA 560 robot manipulator.

We propose a minimum-time path planning soheme for the robot manipulator using Hopfield neural network. The minimum-time path planning, which can allow the robot system to perform the demanded tasks with a minimum execution time, may be of consequence to improve the productivity. But most of the methods proposed till now suffers from a significant computational burden and thus limits the on-line application. One way to avoid such a difficulty is to apply the neural network technique, which can allow the parallel computation, to the minimum-time problem. This paper propose an approach for solving the minimum-time path planning by using Hopfield neural network. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrarted using the PUMA 560 manipulator.

This paper investigates the direct adaptive control of nonlinear systems using RBFN(radial basis function networks). The structure of the controller consists of a fixed PD controller and a RBFN controller in parallel. An adaptation law for the parameters of RBFN is developed based on the Lyapunov stability theory to guarantee the stability of the overall control system. The filtered tracking error between the system output and the desired output is shown to be UUB(uniformly ultimately bounded). To evaluate the performance of the controller, the proposed method is applied to the trajectory contro of the two-link manipulator.
This paper introduces a constraint operator for the kinematic calibration of a parallel mechanism. By adopting the concept of a constraint operator, the movement between two poses is constrained. When the constrained movements are satisfied, the active joint displacements are taken and inputted into the kinematic model to compute the theoretical movements. A cost function is derived by the errors between the theoretical movement and the actual movement. The parameters that minimize the cost function are estimated and substituted into the kinematic model for a kinematic calibration. A single constraint plane is employed as a mechanical fixture to constrain the movement, and three digital indicators are used as the sensing devices to determine whether the constrained movement is satisfied. This calibration system represents an effective, low cost and feasible technique for a parallel mechanism. A calibration algorithm is developed with a constraint operator and implemented on a parallel manipulator constructed for a machining center tool.

Kinematic calibration enhances absolute accuracy by compensating for the fabrication tolerances and installation errors. Effectiveness of calibration procedures depends greatly on the measurements performed. This paper investigates identifiable parameters and optimum postures for four different calibration procedures - measuring postures completely with inverse kinematic residuals, measuring postures completely with forward kinematics residuals, measuring only the three position components, and restraining the mobility of the end-effector using a constraint link. The study is performed for a six degree-of-freedom fully parallel HexaSlide type parallel manipulator, HSM. Results verify that all parameters are identifiable with complete posture measurements. For the case of position measurements, one and for the case of constraint link, three parameters were found non-identifiable. Selecting postures for measurement is also an important issue for efficient calibration procedure. Typically, the condition number of the identification Jacobian is minimized to find optimum postures. Optimal postures showed the same trend of orienting themselves on the boundaries of the search space.
In the course of robot control system building, there are problems in the position control loop of 3rd axis of robot manipulator. The problems are summerized as two: one is uncontrollability of position and the other is oscillation. And these problems are analyzed through experiment, and it is known that the cause of problems in torsional vibration of 3rd axis. So that these two problems are solved by noise immunity enhancement and lowering of PI controller gain.
