In this study, effects of kneading concentration on characteristics of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) fibers were elucidated. A laboratory two-shaft kneader was utilized for kneading. Kneading concentration was varied in the range of 15-30% (w/w) and the number of kneading treatment was adjusted between 0 and 6 passes. It was found that kneading concentration influenced fiber characteristics. At 15% of pulp concentration, fiber length slightly increased with increasing the number of kneading passes, while other morphological properties such as fiber width and curl decreased: fiber straightening occurred. In addition, the increase in WRV and the decrease in CSF were the largest at 15% kneading concentration, meanings that fibrillation mainly occurred. In contrast, at higher kneading concentration exceeding 20%, fiber deformation like curl was mainly occurred. Also, at kneading concentration of 20% and 30%, fiber length decreased with the number of kneading passes while other morphological properties such as fiber width, and WRV increased. Severe fiber entanglement was found at 30% kneading, which shall be removed during papermaking.

This study was carried out to investigate the pulping and papermaking characteristics of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera G.) leafstalk for the development of high performance paper. Anatomical and chemical properties of the lotus leafstalk were analyzed. The pulping and papermaking properties of the lotus leafstalk by conventional alkali and sulfomethylated pulping processes were also evaluated. The length and width of fibers were 0.06-3.32 mm (av. 1.23 mm) and 3.47-25.6 ${\mu}m$ (av. 20.7 ${\mu}m$), respectively. The length and width of vessel elements were 0.07-0.78 mm (av. 0.20 mm) and 14.1-330.0 ${\mu}m$ (av. 54.13 ${\mu}m$), respectively. The fiber length/fiber width ratio was 60.20. The extractives (cold water, hot water, 1% NaOH and ethanol-benzene) and lignin content of lotus leafstalk were higher than those of plant bast fiber. The contents of holocellulose, lignin, and ash were 73.8%, 24.3%, and 4.3%, respectively. The pulp yields based on pulping methods were sulfomethylated pulping av. 52%, and alkaline pulping av. 42%. The conventional alkaline pulping shows better pulp and sheet properties than the sulfomethylated pulping which was modified pulping processes. But the sulfomethylated pulping shows higher brightness than alkali pulping. In the consequence of FE-SEM observation, lotus leafstalk pulp consists of various kinds of thin walled fibers which have large amount of small pits.

Com stalk was evaluated to verify the potential as a raw material for papermaking. The lower lignin content and higher hemicelluloses content of cornstalk than any woods were considered to be beneficial for pulping and strength properties of paper. The average fiber length of com stalk was similar to those of hardwood, but longer fiber fraction is little bit included. It was found that the refining of pulp can be eliminated because of higher hemicelluloses content and narrower fiber characteristic. Disadvantages of cornstalk pulp were lower bulk and opacity, but it can be overcome by the proper use of wood pulp and filler.

Refining is very important process of fibers treatment for proper paper properties. An extent of refining is usually measured by freeness, although freeness gives complicated meanings. One of a direct way of studying the refining effects on pulp fibers is making photomicrographs of beaten fibers. The conventional microscopy like light microscopy(LM) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) require to preserve the wet structure of pulp fibers morphologically since most of papermaking process is carried out almost entirely in water. Recently developed microscopy, especially confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM), offers the possibility of examining fully hydrated pulp fibers. Cross-sectional images of wet pulp fibers are also generated using optical sectioning by CLSM and image analysis in order to verify and quantify the extent of fiber wall swelling indicating the internal fibrillation. At low beating load such as 2.5 kgf, in the same freeness, breaking length is higher than that of high beating load such as 5.6 kgf. fiber wall thickness at low beating load is greater than that at high beating load. This result is accounted for the fact that internal fibrillation in the low beating load was high.

Alternative way of shaping fibers suitable for papermaking was introduced. Impact refining, which was done simply by hitting wet fibers with a metal weight vertically, was intended to keep the fibers from shortening and to cause mostly internal fibrillation. Virgin chemical pulp, its recycled one and OCC were used in the experiment. It was noticed from the experiment that impact refining on virgin chemical pulp kept the fiber length and increased bonding properties greatly. However, in the recycled fibers from the chemical pulp, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased. In OCC, which seems to contain fractions of semi-chemical pulp and mechanical pulp (GP), and which is recycled pulp from corrugated boxes, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased disastrously. We believe recycled cellulosic fibers (recycled chemical pulp and OCC in this case), which went through hornification, were less resistant to the mechanical impact than virgin chemical pulp. For virgin chemical pulp, impact refining allowed no significant fiber length shortening, high WRV, and high mechanical strength.

The utilization of non-woody fibers with the fast growing annual plants has occurred in the paper industry to replace wood and preserve environment of the earth. The non-woody fibers generally used for papermaking are paper mulberry, gampi, manila hemp, rice straw, bamboo, and coton linter etc.. Recently Kenaf has been spot-lighted for the same application. Kenaf is an annual plant of Hibiscus species of Malvaceae family. Kenaf, a rapid growing and high harvesting non-woody fiber plant, was identified as one of the promising fiber sources for the production of paper pulp. This study was carried out to investigate the pulping characteristics of Kenaf bast fiber for Hanji (traditional Korean paper) manufacturing by different pulping methods, such as alkali, alkali-peroxide and sulfomethylated pulpings. It was possible to make superior grade of Hanji. Especially sulfomethylated pulping was resulted in superior pulp in terms of higher yields and qualities in comparison to those of the other pulping methods. Hanji from sulfomethylated pulp was shown the highest brightness of over 60% and higher sheet strength. In addition, the morphological features of pulp fibers (pulp compositions) affect to the sheet properties. Therefore the effect of fiber distribution index(FDI) which was calculated from the data of Confocal laser scanning microscopy(CLSM) on the sheet properties of Kenaf Hanji was also discussed.
This study using a method different from those employed previously, the anatomical characteristics of paper-mulberry wood were confirmed by observing three different sections. In addition, the factors affecting the pulp and papermaking processes were analyzed in terms of morphological properties such as the fiber length and width, lumen width, and chemical composition of the paper-mulberry bast fiber. The anatomical characteristics of the paper-mulberry wood were a ring porous or semi-ring porous structure with the vessels showing solitary pore and radial array. The medullary ray of the tangential section showed 1-3 rows and common helical thickening. Consequently, the paper-mulberry wood has the same anatomical characteristics throughout. The morphological characteristics of the paper-mulberry bast fiber are a fiber length of 6.58 to 9.01 mm, fiber width of 15.85 to $27.80{\mu}m$, lumen width of 4.50 to $12.54{\mu}m$. The D sample of Gangwon was the most suitable for the pulp and papermaking processes, in terms of its derived morphological ratios. Comparing the chemical compositions, the C sample of Gyeongsang had a high holocellulose content (90%). Thus, the findings herein will aid in determining the quality of Korean paper post production.

Refining in papermaking plays an important role in changing fiber properties as well as paper properties. The major effects of refining on pulp fibers are internal and external fibrillation, fiber shortening, and fines formation. Many workers showed that internal fibrillation of the primary refining effects was most influential in improving paper properties. In particular, refining produces separation of fiber walls into several lamellae, thus causing fiber wall swelling with water penetration. This leads to the increase of fiber flexibility and of fiber-to-fiber contact during drying. If the fibers are very flexible, they will be drawn into close contact with each other by the force of surface tension as the water is removed during the drainage process and drying stages. In order to study the effect of fiber wall delamination on paper properties, cross-sectional image of fibers in a natural condition had to be generated without distortion. Finally, it was well recognized that confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) could be one of the most efficient tool for creating and quantifying fiber wall delamination in combination with image analysis technique. In this study, the CLSM could be used not only to observe morphological features of transverse views of swollen fibers refined under low and high intensity, but also to investigate the sequence of fiber wall delamination and fiber wall breakage. From the CLSM images, increasing the specific energy or refining decreased the degree of fiber collapse, fiber cross-sectional area, fiber wall thickness and lumen area. High intensity refining produced more external fibrillation.

The cleaning efficiency of papermaking felt which is contaminated with fiber fines and various micro-materials was investigated and compared between the application of enzyme and commercial detergent. It was found that the cleaning efficiency by the treatment of acidic-based detergent was more efficient than that of alkaline-based one in the conventional commercial detergent. it was also observed that the treatment design of first acidic-based detergent treatment to second alkaline-based detergent procedure was better in the cleaning efficiency, compared to alkaline based-to-acidic based one. The cleaning property of felt with enzyme was resulted in good cleaning efficiency, without any addition of surfactant. Especially, the enzyme treatment under alkaline condition (pH 10) showed a better cleaning result than that under acidic condition(pH 5). The addition of nonionic surfactant to the enzyme increased the cleaning efficiency of felt and decreased the cationic demand of wastewater. These results showed more favour than the application of conventional commercial detergent.

To examine the feasibility of dry forming technology for papermaking, a dry forming mold (DFM) was developed and evaluated. Main fanning section of DFM was a cylindrical tube, and at the top of the mold a stirring equipment was placed to disperse dry fibers. These fibers were screened using a hole type screen plate placed just under the stirring equipment and dropped freely on the fanning wire located 0.9 m below of the screen plate to form a dry fiber pad. The vertical and horizontal velocity of air flow in the forming cylinder were evaluated and analyzed to find the most effective method of air flow control in the cylinder. Humidification and pressing conditions to obtain a decent dry fanned papers were examined. Results showed dry fanned papers can be prepared with this dry forming mold. And this mold can be used to examine the effect of the papermaking process factors including pressing pressure, drying temperature, humidification on sheet quality of dry formed papers.
