A cationic demand(CD) is a very useful indication for determining the optimum dosage rate of retention aids to the papermaking stock at the wet end. Polyelectrolyte titration has been most often used to determine a CD. Highly accurate results can be obtained by this method when the ionic strength of sample is low. But this is accompanied by the serious errors when the ionic strength is higher than that corresponding to 20 milli molar(mM) monovalent, 2 mM divalent or 0.2 mM trivalent ions because of no occurrence of the end point of titration. Therefore, it is very difficult or almost impossible for the conventional method to be applied to the industrial suspensions such as papermaking stock and industrial waste water. Then a novel method using chromophoric labeled cationic polymer which can be applicable to the sample with high ionic strength has been developed.
Papermaking technology has drastically improved over the last 20 years to face new challenges. Because environmental regulations have become increasingly strict, papermaking systems have had to accommodate elevated recycled pulp content and an increased use of recycled process water. Process water in papermaking systems has become more dirtier and reduced polymer efficiency. Amphoteric PAM demonstrated a higher degree of stability in a high conductivity environment compared to cationic PAM. This was illustrated by the improved retention performance, particularly the ash retention. This amphoteric polymer can be used for board or newsprint production using recycled pulp, especially for the systems where polymer dissolving water is high in conductivity and degradation of cationic functional groups of cationic PAM can occur.
In this paper, we propose a web inspection system (WIS) for real-time detection of paper defects which can cause critical fractures during papermaking process. Our system incorporates high speed line-scan camera, lighting system, and detection algorithm to provide robust and precise detection of paper defects in real-time. Since edge defects are very crucial to the paper fractures, our system focuses on the edge region of the paper instead of inspecting the whole paper area. In our algorithm, image projection and sub-pixel operation are utilized to detect the edge defects precisely and connected component labeling and shape analysis techniques are adopted to extract various kinds of the region defects. Experimental results revealed that our web inspection system is very efficient for detecting paper defects during papermaking processes.
Scale is agglomerate or thin film compounded of soluble salts in papermaking process. It causes many problems such as closing up pipelines, contaminating wire and felt, decreasing efficiency of additives and paper quality. In this study, physical factors related to forming scale in white water are determinated and optimum conditions are proposed. To control scale, ACP(Acrylacid Copolymer) was synthesized and compared with conventional chemicals such as EDTA, DTPA and STPP.
The reduction of paper machine water usage is precursor to the water system closure of any mills. This reduction in water consumption reduces the loss of solids; especially fine particulates and their surface adsorbed chemical additives, from mills, which causes an inevitable increase of fine materials in papermaking systems. Also the reduction of paper machine water usage causes substantial increase of organic and inorganic substances in process water. The deterioration of the papermaking process water quality accompanying the reduction of papermaking system closure can be a prime source of the aggravation of paper quality and process efficiency. It is of great importance for paper mills to investigate the influence of the level of papermaking system closure on the paper properties and process runnabililty before implementing process closure. To predict the changes in paper properties at different levels of system closure, highly cotaminated white water was prepared using reverse osmosis technology and used to prepare handsheets from fine paper and newsprint stocks. Results showed that the quality of process water affects the strength. Preparation of highly contaminated process water and handsheet forming with headbox stocks provided important criteria to determine the relationship between the qualities of process water and paper products.
As one of traditional packaging materials, paper and paperboard are being more popular and beneficial thanks to their environmental sustainability and have been widely used in packaging applications, from light weight infusible tissue for tea/coffee bags to heavy duty boards for the distribution. Papermakers have to design the products having a desired customized function with their paper machine. Globally, the use of filler and pigment in papermaking is now a very common practice to meet the needs of customers. Many benefits can be achieved as a result of filler addition, which mainly includes cost and energy savings. The replacement of traditional mineral fillers and pigments with biodegradable and renewable carbohydrate polymers is a very interesting and promising research topic due to the concern of environmental impact. In this review paper, the use of traditional and novel carbohydrate fillers and pigments in cellulosic paper is highlighted. It is noteworthy that there are still some challenges and technical barriers associated with the use of these organic materials in point of structural stabilities and manufacturing costs, although most of them are available in market as the commercialized products. With the emerging nanotechnologies, it is believed that the use of carbohydrate-based filler and pigment for papermaking will increase and bring technical advantages to industry.
Paper industry in Korea produces 14 million tons of paper and 1.3 million tons of sludge per year. Most of them has been treated by incineration, landfilling or ocean dumping. The sludge recycling to minimize the impact on the environment, so its importance is highlighted. In this study, in order to develop a new way of recycling the sludge, it was calcined and the recycled ash was tried to use as papermaking filler. Concerning the yield of calcium carbonate and the brightness and the rheology of the recycled calcination sludge, the optimum calcination conditions were found to be $600^{\circ}C$ and 12 hours. The sludge ash itself was not suitable for papermaking due to its color and low brightness. Thus the ash from the sludge was first mixed with a commercial filler and then utilized for papermaking. The effect of the increased hardness after high temperature treatment on wire abrasion was confirmed.
Excellence of the Korean traditional paper(Hanji) can be proved by literatures and legacies handed down from generations. However, with the problems pertaining to a majority of traditional manufactures, Hanji industry was declined because of low productivity, insufficient supply of raw material , and reduced demand. therefore, modernizxation of the Hanji technology and development of new uses are very important. This study was carried to investigated the papermaking characteristics of Morus spp.(M.alba, M.Bombycis, and M.Ihou) for new Hanji, modernize manufacturing process of Hanji by grafting on developed modern pulping and papermaking technology, develop the various uses, and establish the foundation for development of high value-added products. Hanji is made from M.Ihou, while stalk , and sulfomethylated pulp gave better sheet formation and higher brightness than those of the others. Physical properties of Hanji which made from bast fiber pulps were better than those of whole stalk pulps. Hanji which made from M.bombycis bast fiber and whole stalk pulps were not so good sheet strength as other species. Sulfomethylated whole stalk pulps were shown better sheet strength than alkali and alkali-hydrogen peroxide whole stalk pulps.
Fillers have been used for papermaking in order to enhance the optical properties, to improve sheet formation, printability and dimensional stability and to reduce the furnish cost. However, filler particles in paper interfere with fiber-fiber bonding, resulting in decreased paper strength. In order to increase filler content in paper without sacrificing too much paper strength, dual addition technology of fillers was investigated. As a first step, the effects of thick stock addition of fillers on paper properties and papermaking process were elucidated. It was shown that thick stock addition of fillers could increase paper strength at a given filler content. No significant adverse effects on formation, drainage and filler retention were observed. However, bulk of paper was reduced with thick stock addition of fillers, which shall be resolved with regulating other factors such as the mixing ratio of pulps and type of fillers.
In order to improve filler-fiber bonding in paper, starch-filler composites were prepared by a starch-fatty acid complex formation method. These composites were used as a papermaking filler to improve the physical properties of the paper, filler retention and the sizing effect. The solubility of the starch-fatty acid complex in water at different temperatures was measured. The results indicated that the starch-fatty acid complexes have very low solubility in water below $70^{\circ}C$, which can be easily coated on clay surface to modify clay-fiber bonding ability. The clay-starch composite filled handsheets showed that paper strength could increase more than $100{\sim}200%$ compared to untreated clay. It was found that ZDT of the handsheet decreased as the clay content increased when unmodified clay was used, but it increased when the starch-fatty acid composite modified filler was used. It was also found that the presence of fatty acide in the complex increased the water-repellant property of the handsheet, which can be used to aid in sizing during papermaking. Filler distribution and bonding characteristics between the composite and fiber were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).
