This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of handsheets made from nonwoody New-Zealand hemp (Phormium tenax) fibers that was not used before in Korea. The results were as follows : 1. Physical properties of bleached phormium fiber were satisfactory for handsheet forming. Specially, tensile strength was improved by adding bleached phormium fiber. 2. Opacity of handsheet with phormium pulp was fine, therefore it can be useful fiber to improve opacity of light-weight printing paper. 3. Filler retention rate was improved when phormium pulp was added, while drainage time was increased. 4. Phormium fiber has good characteristics as pulp for paper manufacture. So it can be valuable non-wood fiber resource if drainage problem is solved.

Anatomical and chemical properties of three mulberry species (Morus spp) were analyzed as an alternative row material for the paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki) . The pulping and papermaing characteristics of bast fiber and whole stalks by three different pulping processes, conventional alkali, alkali-hydrogen peroxide, and sulfomethylated, for the Hanji were investigated. The fiber dimension of M.bombycis was the biggest of the species. The fiber length of upper part and the fiber width and cell wall thickness of lower part were bigger than the others. The extractives and ash contents of bast fiber were higher than those of whole stalk , and holocellulose and lignin contents of whole stalk were higher than those of bast fiber. The pulp yields of M.alba bast fiber, M.bombycis whole stalk, and sufomethylated pulping were higher than the others.

The accelerated aging characteristics of electroconductive papers manufactured with a mixture of carbon fiber were investigated by heating in dry oven. By accelerated aging time, the tensile strength, tensile stretch of the papers were decreased more slowly with increase of carbon fiber content, but the electrical conductivity was more rapidly decreased in case of high carbon fiber content. The weight loss of papers by thermal analysis were reduced as increasing the carbon fiber content. These results were indicated that the electrical conductivity of carbon fiber was diminished easily by heat aging, but thermal characteristic of carbon fiber was much better than that of wood pulp.
This study was carried out to investgate the possiblity of using waste bamboo and bast fiber from paper mulberry for Hwaseonji production. 3 types of Hwaseonji were made in an experimental system, 100% bamboo pulp, bamboo pulp mixed with bast fiber in two different ratios, 70% : 30% and 40% : 60%, respectively. The result were as follows: 1. The chinese ink blots of Hwaseonji made from bamboo pulp only was satisfactory, but its tensile strength showed a low value. In order to improve the tensile strength, we must develope a new beating method with musilige. 2. The burst strength increased as the bast fiber content increased. But it is a special characteristic of Hwaseonji, that an even formation of paper is required. Therefore, only the short bast fiber is needed. 3. The tensile strength was raised by increasing the bast fiber content to 60%, resulting in a more durable Hwaseonji. 4. In even thickness, the higher opacity showed the more bast fiber. So the opacity of product III (bamboo: 40%, bast fiber: 60%) is the highest. 5. The commodity value of hand-made paper should be grade-up after a dedusting process.

The new way of utilization of Hanji need to develop for adding high value added. An watermarked Hanji was prepared with non-mulberry mixed fibers and the properties were investigated. The mechanical properties of non-mulberry fiber mixed Hanji were very similar to mulberry fiber Hanji. The non-mulberry fiber mixed Hanji was a little brighter than original Hanji. The air permeability and pore size of the hot pepper fiber mixed Hanji were decreased depending on the content of hot pepper fiber. The printing ability of watermarked Hanji made of non-mulberry mixed fibers was higher than that of original paper mulberry Hanji. The preservation properties of non-mulberry fiber mixed watermarked Hanji were almost same as those of the original Hanji.

Despite the ubiquity of electronic media, paper is still the most generally readable carrier of information. Because paper materials are deteriorated by chemical, biological and physical factors over time, there have been major concerns about the decay of large collections of books, publications, old maps, historical artifacts, and written records. Therefore, manufacture of permanent paper has been a highly debated issue in paper conservation research. Through the use of permanent paper, our new records, journals, library books, art works, and all culturally and historically important documents can be preserved. In this study, handsheets were made of mixture of hemp bast fiber produced by soda pulping and HwBKP varying the amount of hemp. Physical, mechanical and optical properties of each handsheet were examined. As the ratio of hemp bast fiber increased, mechanical properties were improved significantly, but opacity decreased. After aging, the optical properties of the handsheets mixed with the hemp bast fiber more decreased than those of the non-mixed handsheet. The more mixture ratio of hemp bast fiber increased, the more decreasing rate of optical properties increased. As a result, it was confirmed that hemp bast fiber is a very promising resource for the manufacturing of permanent paper.
Shredded waste newspapers, waste acrylic raw fibers, and urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives, at 10% by weight on raw material, were used to produce recycled waste paper-waste acrylic raw fiber composite boards in laboratory scale experiments. The physical and mechanical properties of fire retardant treated recycled waste paper-waste acrylic raw fiber composite boards were examined to investigate the possibility of using the composites as internal finishing materials with specific gravities of 0.8 and 1.0, containing 5, 10, 20, and 30(wt.%) of waste acrylic raw fiber and 10, 15, 20, and 25(wt.%) of fire retardant (inorganic chemical, FR-7®) using the fabricating method used by commercial fiberboard manufacturers. The bending modulus of rupture increased as board density increased, decreased as waste acrylic raw fiber content increased, and also decreased as the fire retardant content increased. Mechanical properties were a little inferior to medium density fiberboard (MDF) or hardboard (HB), but significantly superior to gypsum board (GB) and insulation board (IB). The incombustibility of the fire retardant treated composite board increased on increasing the fire retardant content. The study shows that there is a possibility that composites made of recycled waste paper and waste acrylic raw fiber can be use as fire retardant internal finishing materials.
The aim of this research was to investigate the manufacturing possibility of the paper sludge-synthetic fiber-wood fiber composite. Three levels of the formulation of paper sludge, synthetic fiber and wood fiber (5:5:90, 15:15:70, 25:25:50), two types of adhesive (PMDI, urea-formaldehyde resin) and three levels of density(0.7, 0.8, 0.9) were designed. From the test result, composites with similar or better properties, when compared with commercial fiberboard, appeared to be possible by the addition of up to 30~50% paper sludge and synthetic fiber into wood fiber.
This study was carried out to develop the Korean paper(Hanji) sludge-wood fiber composite boards utilizing the relinquished sludges occurring from the making process of Korean classic paper Hanji. The bark of paper mulberry(Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb.) has been used as a raw material since past hundreds and thousands years. Korean paper(Hanji) sludge was divided into two kinds, the one was the white sludge from the first stage and the other was the black sludge occurring from the final stage of Korean paper(Hanji) making. Four levels of the mixed ratio of each white or black sludge to wood fiber(10:90, 20:80, 30:70 and 40:60), three levels of the resin adhesives(PMDI, urea and phenol resin) and three levels of the density(0.60, 0.75 and 0.90) were designed to investigate the physical properties of Korean paper(Hanji) sludge-wood fiber composite boards. From the results and discussion, it could be concluded as follows : 1. In the white sludge-wood fiber composite board, the thickness swelling was not affected by the specific gravity and sludge additive of composite boards, but among the resin adhesives PMDI resin showed the best dimensional stability. Water absorption was superior in urea resin, secondly PMDI resin and very poor in phenol resin. 2. In the black sludge-wood fiber composite board, thickness swelling was superior in PMDI resin but very poor in phenol resin. In water absorption, PMDI and urea resin showed good results, regardless of specific gravity or sludge additive, but phenol resin showed poor results. 3. From the results and discussion of physical properties it is suggested that the white sludge-wood fiber composite boards bonded with PMDI or black sludge-wood fiber composite boards bonded with urea resin were made possibly with similar or better properties. compared with general fiberboard until the addition of 20% sludge into wood fiber.

Fractionation effects of the slot-type and the hole-type screens of mutifractors were studied using a pilot multifractor. We used a slot screen of 0.15 mm, and two hole screens of 1.0 and 2.0 mm, respectively, in the study. We found hole-type screens were more effective for fractionation of fiber furnishes according to their fiber lengths. Slot-type screen was more effective to remove the shives from the accepted fiber furnishes. There existed a high regression coefficient between the fiber length differences and the freeness differences of the accepted and the rejected fiber furnishes.
