  • Anatomical and histological changes were studied in the dorsal, ventral, third and splenic lobes of the pancreas of the chicken embryos (8 days of incubation, 10 days of incubation to hatching). From 13 days of incubation, all four pancreatic lobes, namely, dorsal, ventral, third and splenic lobes were observed. Histologically, the pancreas of 10-14 days of incubation were consisted of mesenchymal tissue, exocrine acini and pancreatic islets. But mesenchymal tissues were disappeared from 15 days of incubation. The pancreatic ducts were observed from 14 days of incubation. The dark and light typed pancreatic islets were observed in splenic lobe from 13 days of incubation, in the third lobe from 11 days of incubation, and in the dorsal lobe from 13 days of incubation. But no dark typed islets were observed in the ventral lobes.

  • The distributions and relative frequencies of the serotonin-immunoreactive cells were studied in dorsal, ventral, third and splenic lobes of developing chicken pancreas during embryonic periods (10 days of incubation to hatching) by immunohistochemical methods. The regions of pancreas were subdivided into three regions, exocrine, light and dark islets. Round and/or oval shaped serotonin-immunoreactive cells were detected in all four lobes. According to developmental stages, the types of lobes and the regions of pancreas, these immunoreactive cells were showed various distributions and relative frequencies. In exocrine portions, serotonin-immunoreactive cells were found in the splenic lobes at 13-14 days of incubation, in the third lobes from 10 days to 19 days of incubation, in the ventral lobes from 10 days of incubation to hatching and in the dorsal lobes from 11 days of incubation to hatching. In pancreatic islets, these cells were detected only in the dark islets of splenic lobes at 15 and 16 day of incubation with rare frequency. In conclusion, serotonin-immunoreactive cells decreased with developmental stages in all four lobes and their relative frequencies decreased with developmental stages.

  • Elevated carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 can indicate malignancies of the gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and biliary tracts, and be found in a pulmonary sequestration. A 30-year-old man visited Seoul National University Bundang Hospital due to elevated CA 19-9 levels, representing pulmonary sequestration of the bilateral lower lobes, which were connected with each other. We performed left lower lobectomy and division of the systemic arteries. After operation, CA 19-9 levels decreased to normal range, even though a small amount of sequestrated lung remained in the right lower lobe. It is not uncommon that presence of pulmonary sequestration might elevate serum CA 19-9 levels; however, horseshoe type bilateral pulmonary sequestration is very rare.

  • Tetragomphius procyonis Baylis & Daubney, 1923 were obtained from the pancreatic duct of a naturally infected Eurasian badger, Meles meles, which was submitted to animal hospital for parasitic diagnosis from Gyeryongsan National Park in Korea. The hookworms were examined by light and scanning electron microscope. The length of body measured male 15.0-18.8 mm, female 21.5-25.5 mm, respectively. In both sex, the ventral cutting plates of oral margin are much reduced and elongated latero-dorsally, the dorsal cutting plate is located long follow doral margin of the oral opening. The buccal capsule is cup-shaped and thicken with four cusped tooth at its base. The copulatory bursa has elongated ventral lobes and their large rays are parallel, while the dorsal lobe with its supporting rays is slightly split in two. The slender spicules are filariform and very long (8.7-9.3 mm), and their tips are fused together. The hookworm has following characters: dorsal cone on the both sex, gubernaculum on the male and terminal spine on the female tail absent; vulva is opening in the juction of the fourths and fifths of the body; dorsal ray with two long stems. The eggs from the uterus are 16 cell stages and those from the rectal feces, 32 cell stages. The size of eggs is 77.48-83.45 ${\times}$ 50.75-63.38 ${\mu}m$.

  • Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is a widely-used tumor marker in patients with pancreatic cancer. However, some patients with respiratory disease also exhibit elevated serum CA 19-9 levels. We report a case of normalization of elevated serum CA 19-9 levels after treatment of the nodular bronchiectatic form of Mycobacterium abscessus lung disease. A 40-year-old man visited our hospital because of chronic cough and sputum. A computed tomography scan revealed severe bronchiectasis in the right upper and right middle lobes. Nontuberculous mycobacteria were repeatedly isolated and identified as M. abscessus. The serum CA 19-9 level was elevated to 142.35 U/mL (normal range, <37 U/mL). Surgical resection was performed because of failure of sputum conversion after antibiotic treatment. The serum CA 19-9 level returned to the normal range after surgery. This case suggested that serum CA 19-9 levels could be elevated in patients with the nodular bronchiectatic form of M. abscessus lung disease.
