  • The multi-scale analysis is more proper and precise for composite materials because of considering the individual microscopic structure and properties of each material for composite materials. The purpose of this study is to verify the validity of using palladium particles in carbon/fiber composites by multi-scale analysis. The palladium is a material for itself to detect leaking hydrogen by using the property of adsorbing hydrogen. The macroscopic model material properties used in this study are homogeneous material properties from microstructure. Homogenized material properties that are calculated from periodic boundary conditions in the microscopic representative volume element model of each macroscopic analysis model. In this study, three macroscopic models were used : carbon fiber/epoxy, carbon fiber/palladium, palladium/epoxy. As a result, adding palladium to carbon/epoxy composite is not a problem in terms of strength.

  • A palladium can adsorb hydrogen and detect leaking hydrogen through changes in color and electrical resistance. This study is to evaluate the structural behavior of carbon fiber adding palladium composite materials used in the hydrogen storage vessel. A multi-scale analysis technique was used to analyze accurately the behavior of each material in relation to the microscopic composition. The multi-scale analysis is more proper and precise for composite materials because of considering the individual microscopic structure and properties of each material for composite materials. Also the crack evaluation was performed by XFEM analysis to confirm the reinforcement performance of aluminum as a liner of the hydrogen vessel. The results show that the addition of the palladium material increased the macroscopic stress, but microscopically the carbon fiber stress was reduced. It means the performance improvement of the palladium added carbon fiber/Al composite.

  • 1,1-Dialkyl-2,5-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)-3,4-diphenylsiloles (R=Et, i-Pr, n-Hex; 3a-c) were prepared and utilized as anode active materials for lithium-ion batteries; 3a was also used as a filler for the solid-state electrolytes (SSE). Siloles 3a-c were prepared by substitution reactions in which the two bromine groups of 1,1-dialkyl-2,5-dibromo-3,4-diphe- nylsiloles, used as precursors, were substituted with trimethylsilylacetylene in the presence of palladium chloride, copper iodide, and triphenylphosphine in diisopropylamine. Among siloles 3a-c, 3a had the best electrochemical properties as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, including an initial capacity of 758 mAhg-1 (0.1 A/g), which was reduced to 547 mAhg-1 and then increased to 1,225 mAhg-1 at 500 cycles. A 3a-composite polymer electrolyte (3a-CPE) was prepared using silole 3a as an additive at concentrations of 1, 2, 3, and 4 wt.%. The 2 wt.% 3a-CPE composite afforded an excellent ionic conductivity of 1.09 × 10-3 Scm-1 at 60℃, indicating that silole 3a has potential applicability as an anode active material for lithium-ion batteries, and can also be used as an additive for the SSE of lithium-ion batteries.

  • Heaters using the resistance heating principle are used in various industrial fields that require heat and are also essentially used in bidet among small home appliances. A planar heater and a coil-inserted heater mounted on a conventional commercially used bidet have disadvantages and limitations of complicated manufacturing process and local heating. In this study, silver-palladium (Ag-Pd) powder material was used for a screen-printing process that is more advantageous in achieving simplification than the existing process, and a rod-type heater for bidet was manufactured. The on-off cycle test under actual conditions was conducted to confirm the durability and the capability of the fabricated heater, and the fabricated heater operated more than 2,600 on-off cycles, which means it could be applied for a commercial product. In addition, through the on-off cycles under harsh conditions, the cause of failure was identified after the test that the durability limit temperature of the heater was 850℃. Through Ag-Pd rod heater in this study, it is expected to contribute to the efficient development of electrode materials for heaters and the improvement of the durability of heaters in the future.

  • The hydropurification reaction of CTA (crude terephthalic acid) was carried out with hydrogen over PdRu/CCM (carbon-carbonaceous composite material) catalyst in a batch reactor at high temperature. The first order kinetics of hydropurification is confirmed with the linear dependence of ln(4-CBA; 4-carboxybenzaldehyde) with reaction time. The reaction condition studied is thought to represent the hydropurification well because of the linear dependence of catalytic activity on the catalyst weight. The p-toluic acid (p-tol) in solid and liquid increases with the conversion of reaction or the decrease of 4-CBA. However, the benzoic acid (BA) concentration does not depend much on the conversion. The AT (alkali transmittance) does not depend on the 4-CBA when the concentration is higher than about 0.2% which shows the 4-CBA, in itself, does not cause the coloring effect. The AT of PTA depends inversely with the concentration of 4-CBA when the 4-CBA is less than about 0.15%. This may show the coloring materials are removed in parallel with the hydrogenation of 4-CBA. The (0.3%Pd-0.2%Ru)/CCM shows larger residual catalytic activity than a commercial catalyst, 0.5%Pd/C, after using in a commercial reactor even though the former has smaller fresh activity than the latter. The palladium and ruthenium in PdRu/CCM show the synergetic effect in activity when the ruthenium concentration is about $0.2{\sim}0.35$ wt%. It may be supposed that the PdRu/CCM catalyst can be a promising candidate to replace the commercial Pd/C catalyst.
