The depositional conditions and paleo-oceanography of the Hoedongri Formation(Silurian) distributed in the Hoedongri, Jeongseon-Kun, Kangweon-Do, Korea were investigated. The major rock types and facies of the Hoedongri Formation consist of mudstone and wackestone facies in which the content of insoluble residues is relatively high (average. 17%). The sedimentary structures observed in the Hoedongri Formation being helpful to the interpretation of depositional conditions are; crypt-algalaminates, bird's eye structures, evaporite pseudomorphs, dolomite mottle structures, detrital quartz pockets and cross bedding. Based on the rock types, facies and sedimentary structures of the Hoedongri Formation, it seems that the Hoedongri Formation might be deposited in a saline supratidal and intertidal zone.

Sparker profiles and sediment cores collected from the Korea Strait show a distinct pattern of stacked prograding wedges consisting of three distinct units. These wedges are interpreted as the lowstand deposits formed during glacioeustatic sea-level lowstands. Repeated sea-level falls during late Pleistocene with high sediment discharge from the paleo-Nakdong River system resulted in the formation of thick lowstand wedges.

We examined five astronomical variables formulas of the two conventional harmonic prediction programs (IOS tidal package (IOS) and Task-2000 tidal package (Task2K)) in relation to hindcast of paleo-tides and -tidal currents on historical navel battlefields such as Myeongryang Naval Battle (September 16th, 1597 according to the lunar calendar). Through the comparison of the resultant values in a certain time (00:00 January 1) of each year (1801, 1800 and 1597) calculated from the two different formulas, we understood that the reason why Task2K is incapable of hindcating them in pre-19th century, Specifically, we found that the Task2K formulas directly using the Gregorian calendar date did not identify leap years in calculating astronomical variables beyond the period of 1801-2099. Therefore, the IOS's formulas, which use the day number referenced on midnight 1/1/0000, are recommended for use in hindcasting paleo-tides and -tidal currents on historical navel battles in pre-19th century.

As a multidisciplinary study encompassing oceanography and history, we have attempted to reanalyze the course of a historical navel battle, Myungryang Naval Battle(September 16th, 1597 according to the lunar calendar) through hindcasting the paleo-tidal currents and -tides(PTC). Firstly, we conducted harmonic analysis using 6-month current data observed at Uldolmok and 1-year elevation data provided by Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute in order to understand their characteristics and to hindcast the PTC. Observation results show that Uldolmok, ~300m wide, relatively narrow channel, is characterized by a flood-dominant mixed mainly semidiurnal tidal regime induced by relatively-strong shallow water constituents, showing closely a standing wave type of tidal current. Further, we hindcasted PTC on the day of Myungryang Naval Battle. Our results were compared and discussed with results(time and speeds of maximum(flood and ebb) currents and high and low water times) of the previous studies estimated from different methods. Lastly, we reconstruct the course of the event of Myungryang Naval Battle recorded in the Admiral Sun-Sin Yi's War Diary(Nangjung Iigi in Korean) based on our hindcasting results.
In order to investigate the paleotidal structure and current pattern in the Yellow and East China seas (YECS) since the late Wisconsin, which is the last glacial maximum period, a two-dimensional version of the Princeton ocean model is used. We assume that subtracting the sea-level differences from the present one can produce paleobasins and that the paleotide did not differ greatly from the present one in the adjacent deep seas, the northwestern Pacific Ocean and the East Sea. We could successfully simulate the paleo-M$_2$ tides and tidal currents of 9000, 11000 and 13000 yr B.P. The result of the model shows considerable differences in the tidal pattern in each period. As the eustatic sea level rose, the amplitudes of the paleotides and the number of the amphidromic points generally increased, but the tidal currents in each paleobasin were strong and about the same order as the present day's. Based on these paleotide calculations, we suggest that there should have been active erosion in the paleobasin as in the present YECS, and the erosion should have played an important role on widening the paleobasin to the present shape, YECS.

Long chain alkyl diols (LCDs) have been reported in sediments from various marine environments. Rampen et al. (2012) introduced the paleo-sea surface temperature (SST) proxy, Long chain Diol Index (LDI) based on the relative abundance of $C_{30}$ 1,15-diol, $C_{28}$ 1,13-diol, and $C_{30}$ 1,13-diol. In general, CP-Sil5CB and DB-5ms columns have been used for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of LCDs with a GC-MS. In this study, we examined the effect of three different columns (CP-Sil5CB, HP-5ms and DB-5) on the quantitative analysis of LCDs using marine sediments from the East Sea of Korea and the western Arctic Ocean. In general, our study showed that the results of CP-Sil5CB differed significantly from those of HP-5ms and DB-5. However, the differences of the LDI-derived SSTs among three columns were $0.1-0.2^{\circ}C$ for the East Sea and $0.2-0.7^{\circ}C$ for the western Arctic Ocean, which were well within the calibration error range (${\pm}1{\sigma}$). Accordingly, our study showed that the use of different columns resulted in significant differences of LCDs concentrations, but its effect on the LDI was relatively insignificant. Therefore, it appears that the different columns can be used for the paleo-SST reconstruction in the East Sea and the western Arctic Ocean using the LDI proxy.
Variations in geochemical and mineralogical properties of the ferromanganese(Fe-Mn) crust reflect environmental changes. In the present study, geochemical and mineralogical analyses, including micro X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction, were utilized to reconstruct the paleo-ocean environment of western Pacific Magellan seamount cluster. Samples of the Fe-Mn crust were collected using an epibenthic sledge from the open seamount XX (151° 51.12' 7.2" E and 16° 8.16' 9.6" N, 1557 meters below sea level) in the Western Pacific Magellan Seamount. According to the structure and phosphating status, the Fe-Mn crust of the OSM-XX can be divided into the following: phosphatizated (L4-L5), massive non-phosphatizated (L3), and porous non-phosphatizated (L1-L2) portions. All ferromanganese layers contain vernadite, and owing to the presence of carbonate fluorapatite (CFA), the phosphatizated portion (L4-L5) is rich in Ca and P. The massive non-phosphatizated section (L3) contains high Mn, Ni, and Co, whereas the porous non-phosphatizated portion (L1-L2), which comprises detrital quartz and feldspar, is rich in Fe. Variations in properties of the Fe-Mn crust from the OSM-XX reflect changes in the nearby marine environment. The formation of this crust started at approximately 51.87 Ma, and precipitation of the CFA during the global phosphatization event that occurred at approximately 36-32 Ma highlights an elevated sea level and low temperature during the associated period. The high Mn, Ni, and Co concentrations and elevated Mn/Fe ratios of samples from the massive phosphatizated portion indicate that the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) was enhanced, and reducing conditions prevailed during the crust formation. The high Fe and low Mn/Fe ratios in the porous portion indicate a weak OMZ and dominantly oxidizing conditions. These data reflect environmental changes following the end of the Mi-1 glacial period in the Miocene-Oligocene boundary. Subsequently, Mn/Fe and Co/Mn ratios increased slightly in the outermost part of Fe-Mn crust because of the enhanced bottom current and OMZ associated with the continued cooling from approximately 9 Ma. However, the reduced carbonate dissolution rate in the Pacific Ocean from approximately 6 Ma decreased the growth rate of the Fe-Mn crust.
Both benthic and planktonic foraminifera from Core 97-02 obtained in the northern East China Sea are quantitatively analyzed for reconstructing the paleocenography of late Quaternary. Since the earliest time of the core sediment (last not older than 18000 yr B.P.), the paleo-water depth has changed from less than 20 m to near 100 m at present, which is reflected by the benthic foraminiferal assemblages: before 14000 yr B.P., the water depth was shallower than 20 m; from 14000 to 7500 yr B.P., water depth was 20-50 m; and after 7500 yr B.P., water depth was 50-100 m. The foraminiferal fauna also disclose the water mass history: during the last glacial maximum, the water that dominated the study area might be the coastal water; at the end of the last glacial maximum(14000-9500 yr B.P.), the Yellow Sea Cold Water mostly affected this area; then it gave way to the Yellow Sea Warm Current after 9500 yr B.P.; and finally, the warm water has dominated this area since 9500 yr B.P. because of the westward shift and enhancement of the Kuroshio Current.
In this study, ship movement simulation was performed based on a marine physics model for the ancient port presumed under the past environmental conditions in the coastal area of Hwaseong, which played an important role as a center of trade in the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla periods. The paleo topographical surface was reconstructed through the analysis of borehole sediments, and the paleo coastline was extracted through the geomorphological maps published during before independence. Based on the established paleo environmental conditions of the Hwaseong coast, the marine physics model (FVCOM) was used to simulate the flow of surface currents and the route of floating materials assumed to be ancient ships. As a result, the processes of moving ships from the port to the open sea in the Eunsupo area, which is estimated location of the ancient port related to Dangseong, was well simulated, and thus the reliability of the location of the ancient port estimated by the scientific method was secured. This study is significant as a result of convergence research that encompasses archeology, history, geomorpology, geology, and oceanography.
Stable isotopic and elemental compositions were analyzed for well- preserved calcareous skeletons (gastropods, pectenids, brachiopods, a scaphopod, and other bivalves) of the Pleistocene Seoguipo Formation from Cheju Island, Korea. Mineralogically and texturally, aragonitic and calcitic fossils still retain their original mineralogy and microstructure. High $\delta$$\^$18/O and $\delta$$\^$13/C contents indicate that the shells have not been altered by the post-burial diagenesis. Also, this is supported by high Na and Sr contents as well as low Mn and Fe compositions of the shells. Oxygen isotopic compositions of the well preserved fossils show that the organisms had lived under the lower paleotemperature or within the isotopically enriched paleo-seawater during the deposition of the Seoguipo Formation. This result strongly implies that the Seoguipo Formation was deposited during a glacial period. The paleotemperature variation throughout the sequence during the deposition of the Sewguipo Formation was negligible.
