  • There is no line of demarcation between the shoulder and elbow regions. Pain In the arm may originate at the shoulder with reference downwards or less often at the elbow with reference upwards. Most pains indicated by the patient at the elbow or forearm have a local origin, since at the more distal part of the upper limb the capacity for correct localization is good. Once it is clear that the elbow region is at fault, the joint and the muscles about it are tested by ten movements. 1. Four. Passive extension, flexion, pronation, supination-full range, LOM, painful, painless. 2. Four. Resisted extension, flexion, pronation, supination-strong, weak, painful, painless. 3. Two. Resisted flexion, extension at the wrist-painful, painless. The muscles that perform theses two movements arise from the humeral epicondyles and a lesion in either often causes pain felt at the elbow although the tissuse affected is not functionally a part of the elbow (i. e. Tennis elbow and Golfer's elbow).

A Novel Approach to the Treatment of Shoulder Pain (오십견 치료에 대한 새로운 지견)

  • It has been generally known that shoulder pains are attributed to the degenerative changes around the shoulder joint. However, many patients who complain of pain or limited range of motion of the shoulder have no definite pathology on X-ray or laboratory examinations. I examined 134 patients with shoulder pain and found the fact that compression of the axillary nerve, which leads to contraction of the deltold muscle or teres minor muscle, resulted in pain and limited range of motion in many cases. Accordingly, relieving the compression of the axillary nerve by laser stimulation or local anesthetic infiltration on the identified trigger point, anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxant together with ordinary physical therapy was found to be very effective in the treatment of shoulder pain.

  • Since conventional analgesics have showed limited therapertic value in the treatment of painful neuropathy, the new anticonvulsant gabapentin, has been tried and turned out to be effective and safe in the treatment for various forms of neuropathic pain. The basic pathophysiology of neuropathic pains is abnormal neuronal hyperactivity similar to epileptic seizures. Therefore, we could expect that neuropathic pain would be suppressed by anticonvulsants which inhibit abnormal excessive neuronal output and nerve conduction. This report include effective pain relief in four cases of neuropathic pain with gabapentin without any significant complications.

  • Pericarp of Zanthoxylum coreanum Nakai have been used as a crude medicine for the treatment of ozena, rheumatoid, nasal sinusitis, meno-xenia, dyspepsia, toothache, sore throat, pains in the limbs, etc. in Korea. A sterol fraction and two compounds, compound I and II were isolated from the roots, stems, leaves of Zanthoxylum coreanum Nakai. The sterol fraction was identified as a mixture of ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and campesterol. Compound I, colorless prismatic crystals, $C_{13]H_{13}NO_4$, mp. $175{\sim}177^{\circ}$, was proved to be skimmianine which is one of the alkaloids and compound II, $C_{14}H_{28}O_2$, mp. $53{\sim}55^{\circ}$, white powdered crystals was identified as myristic acid.

Effects of taping technique applied to muscles causing pain on cervical movement and pain (원인근 테이핑 요법이 경추부 관절운동과 동통에 미치는 영향)

  • Pain is the most common symptom that brings a patient to the hospital. Repetitious stress and sprain injury result in various pains, and so we tried to improve cervical movement and release from pain by using taping technique of actual agonists and postural muscles in addition to psychological relaxation. The 4 patient with neck problems were applied Arikawa taping approaches. The flexor or extensor patterns were determined by Arikawa method at first. if the symptoms and patterns were similar, the taping was attached same point. After taping on major muscles of causing neck pain levator scapula, scalenus medius, sternocleidomastoid, splenius capitis, semispinalis capitis. - we found neck pain released and cervical ROM increased. In conclusion, we determined cervical movement related to rotation of splenius capitis, extention of semispinalis capitis, levator scapula, flexion and rotation of scalenus medius.

A Proposal of Both Use of Direct Moxibustion and Electro-Moxibustion for Cancer Treatment Moxibustion

  • Objectives: We here do propose that cancer treatment moxibustion should be used both direct moxibustion and electro-moxibustion simultaneously. Methods: Electro-moxibustion is used in $38^{\circ}C$ low-heat level and it will help to raise parasympathetic and to bring stability of mentality. Direct moxibustion is used in rice size and will help to raise sympathetic and to induce visceral reflection and visceral motion. Results: Electro-moxibustion increased average body heat by $+2.51^{\circ}C$ and kept patients from suffering pains. Direct moxibustion increased average body heat by $+1.2^{\circ}C$ by meridian point-internal organs reflection. Conclusions: Both use of direct moxibustion and electro-moxibustion simultaneously will be superior to the only either direct moxibustion or electro-moxibustion for cancer treatment moxibustion.

  • The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) has been reported to originate along the gulf of the guinea in West Africa. The various parts of the tree have been used locally and traditionally for various medicinal purposes. Some of these uses have been proved by scientific experiments. Palm oil is extracted from the mesocarp of the fruit and is used traditionally for the treatment of headaches, pains, rheumatism, cardiovascular diseases, arterial thrombosis and an atherosclerosis due to its rich phytonutrients. The leaves are also used for the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases and wound healing. The sap also has been found to be rich in phytonutrients that can be used to treat various diseases. This review therefore seeks to explore many of the uses of the oil palm using the various parts of the oil palm.

  • This study has been aimed at figuring out the fact that four kinds of body type grouped according to the tilting of scapular of upper extremity and ilium of low extremity showed the mobility increase for joint parts and the limitation. When we make a thrapy plan which should be comprehensive and general in preventative management and therapy. For the sake of patients who have spinal disabilities including low back pains, it is required for many joints distributing among upper and lower extremity to have hypermobility and hypomobility based on regulation. So, this study was conducted to establish a standard for the effective pattern of hypermobility or hypomobility. I hope that the result of this study can help support the practics of physical therapy as a part of scientic method. Especially I think it will be able to be conductive to those who major in physical therapy on the arthrogenic region.

Development of Real-time Monitoring System for Muscle Tension by High Intensity Laser Therapy (고출력 레이저 치료를 통한 근강직 완화의 실시간 모니터링 연구)

  • Currently, high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) is increasingly used in various muscle disorders like muscle tension. Our proposed study includes the development of the real-time monitoring system using a myotonometer for HILT. The developed system consists of a piezoelectric sensor and laser distance sensor for muscle stiffness monitoring during the treatments. The results demonstrated that the level of muscle tension was rapidly decreased after 3 minutes of the high-intensity laser treatment when compared to the control group. The combined HILT and realtime muscle tension monitoring system may help to evaluate the therapeutic procedure and efficient treatments for various muscle pains.

The Methods to Increase the Connection between KTX and Traditional Trains (고속철도와 기존철도의 연계증진방안)

  • The Korean Train eXpress(KTX) which started in last April has got many complaints of passengers. This is caused by weak connections between KTX and traditional trains. This paper shows the methods to increase the connection in 3 points of view; business, operation and rolling stocks. For the flexible business, it is necessary that the connecting trains must be multi-purposefully for the satisfaction of KTX transferring passengers and existing commuting passengers. And the expanding of free class is needed. A free class is the base of business flexibility. In an operation point of view, I show the method that can decrease pains for getting transfer. Finally, for the effective using of rolling stocks, I propose that TC(trailer with control) car is added to existing locomotive and passenger coach set. In concluding, KTX needs strong connections with traditional trains. This will bring more competitive power with other transportation systems. And that method must get flexible and various service, in addition to effective and minimizing investment.
