Heavy metals are naturally found in the ecosystem, and their presence in the freshwater river is increasing through anthropogenic activities which pose a threat to living beings. In this study, heavy metal concentrations (Zn, Mn, Cu, Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, and Ni) in different organs (muscle, skin, and gill) of fish from the Padma River were evaluated to quantify, and compare the contamination levels and related human health risks. The results revealed that the heavy metal concentrations in the water, surface sediments, and fish taken from the Padma River were far below the WHO/USEPA's permitted limits. The estimated daily intake (EDI) value in muscle was less than the tolerable daily intake (TDI). The target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard indexes (HI) were less than 1, showing that consumers face no non-carcinogenic risk (CR). CR values of Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Ni ranged from 4.00 × 10-8 to 6.35 × 10-6, less than 10-4, and total carcinogenic risk (CRt) values ranged from 9.85 × 10-6 to 1.10 × 10-5, indicating some pose a CR from consumption of those fish from the Padma River. To establish a more accurate risk assessment, numerous exposure routes, including inhalation and cutaneous exposure, should be explored.
The genetic variations in three major river populations viz. the Halda, the Jamuna and the Padma of the Indian major carp, Catla catla were analyzed by Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Four decamer primers were used for amplifying DNA of 10 individuals from each population. The proportion of polymorphic loci and the gene diversity estimates were 59.4 and 0.20 for the Halda, 37.5 and 0.14 for the Jamuna and 46.9 and 0.16 for the Padma populations respectively indicating the existence of a relatively high level of genetic variation in the Halda river population. The inter-population similarity indices, gene flow and genetic distance values indicated that the Jamuna-Padma population pair of catla was genetically closer than the Halda-Jamuna and the Halda-Padma population pairs in compliance with the geographical distances among them. The coefficient of gene differentiation ($G_{ST}$=0.13) reflects some degree of genetic differentiation among three populations of catla studied. The data suggest that the RAPD technique could be used to discriminate different river populations of catla.
The Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RAPD-PCR) was applied to analyze the genetic variation of the Hilsa shad, Tenualosa ilisha Ham., from the two major inland rivers (Padma and Meghna) in Bangladesh. Twenty-eight random 10-mer primers were primarily scored in 8 individuals from each of the two locations. Fifteen primers, which gave polymorphism, were selected and used in the final analysis of 34 individuals from the two sites. Using these primers, 480 scorable DNA fragments were found, of which 98 (20.41%) were polymorphic. By comparing the RAPD banding patterns, variations were found between and within the populations. A dendrogram was constructed with the polymorphic fragments to analyze the genetic distances between the Hilsa shad populations. The results show two major clusters of Padma and Meghna, assuming different spawning populations with different stocks or races of Hilsa shad in the major Bangladesh rivers.
Radon is a naturally occurring carcinogenic agent, poses a serious health hazard when inhaled or ingested in significant amounts. The water of the Padma river will be used as a tertiary coolant for the soon-to-be-commissioned 'Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant'. Hence, it is important to assess the radiological status of the river prior to the commission of this power plant. Therefore, for the first time, 25 samples of water were collected from various locations of the Padma River and analyzed for radon concentration using the RAD H2O (DURRIDGE) radon monitoring device. The radon concentrations were found in the range from 0.077 ± 0.036 to 0.494 ± 0.211 Bq/L with a mean of 0.250 ± 0.093 Bq/L. All the concentrations were found to be below the recommended limits of WHO (100 Bq/L) and USEPA (11.1 Bq/L). The mean annual effective dose due to the radon exposure via inhalation and ingestion pathways were 0.638 µSv/y and 0.629 µSv/y, respectively, which were all well below the annual effective dose recommended by WHO (0.1 mSv/y). Since Bangladesh lacks a national safety limit of radon in water, this pioneering study provides baseline data on radon levels for the environment around Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

The paper deals with the values at the negative integers of a certain Dirichlet series related to the Riemann zeta function and with the expression of these values in terms of Bernoulli numbers.
Background: Wild fish populations stock is continuously diminishing in the Indo-Ganges river basin, and the population status of most fishes is unidentified. The identification of the population status and the conservation of commercially important and endemic wild fish populations in this region are crucial for the management. The aim of this paper was to identify the population status of Cirrhinus reba, a promising aquaculture but vulnerable species in the Indo-Ganges river basin in Bangladesh. Methods: C. reba samples were collected from four isolated populations of the Brahmaputra (n = 30), the Padma (33), the Karatoya (31), and the Jamuna Rivers (30) in Bangladesh, and the population status was evaluated using morphometric and landmark comparisons. Data were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test, univariate analysis, discriminant function analysis, and the formation of a dendrogram. Results: Three meristic characters (Pectoral fin rays, caudal fin rays, scale in lateral lines), four morphometric characters (head length, pre-orbital length, post-orbital length, maximum body depth), and truss measurement (4-7) were significantly different among the stocks. The step-wise discriminant function analysis retained 15 variables from morphometric and landmark measurements that significantly differentiated the populations based on the constructed DFI and DFII. Discriminate function analysis also showed that 91.2% of the original groups were classified into their correct samples. The cluster analysis of Euclidean distances placed the Jamuna population in one cluster and the Brahmaputra, the Padma, and the Karatoya populations in the second one. Conclusion : Morphological differences among the stock were probably due to different ancestral origin. This is the first report about population status of C. reba in their natural habitat of the Indian subcontinent. Further genetic studies and the evaluation of environmental impact on C. reba populations in Bangladesh are suggested to support our findings.
The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP), the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh with a capacity of 2.4 GWe, is under construction on the bank of the river Padma, at Rooppur in Bangladesh. Measurement of background radioactivity in the natural environment adjacent to RNPP finds great importance for future perspectives. Soil and sediment samples collected from upstream and downstream positions of the Padma River (adjacent to RNPP) were collected and analyzed by HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry for primordial radionuclides. The average activity concentrations (in Bqkg-1) of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K radionuclides in soil samples were found to be 44.99 ± 3.89, 66.28 ± 6.55 and 553 ± 82.17 respectively. Respective values in sediment samples were found to be 44.59 ± 4.58, 67.64 ± 7.93, 782 ± 108. Relevant radiation hazard indices and dosimetric parameters were calculated and compared with the world average data recommended by US-EPA. Analytical results show non-negligible radiation hazards to the surrounding populace. Measured data will be useful to monitor any change of background radioactivity in the surrounding environment of RNPP following its operation for the generation of nuclear energy.

Trichoderma harzianum-THN1 parasitising the egg masses of root knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita was isolated from galled mulberry roots and evaluated for its potential to control root knot disease. In pot experiments root galling was reduced and leaf yield increased significantly following soil treatment with T. harzianum-THN1. The extracts obtained from the soils inoculated with T. harzianum-THN1 drastically inhibited the hatching of nematode eggs and the effect was irreversible even after the eggs were transferred to fresh water. The fungus was equally effective in controlling the disease in nematode infested mulberry garden under field conditions which was significant over the most commonly used egg parasitic fungus Paecilomyces lilacinus. The disease reduction recorded with T. harzianum was on par with the plants treated with the nematicide Carbofuran. The results suggest that T. harzianum- THN1 could be used as a potent ecofriendly biocontrol agent against M. incognita in mulberry without any residual toxicity to silkworms. T. harzianum- THN1 can form an important component of integrated disease management package in mulberry cultivation.

Chemical investigation on a sample of the needles of Himalayan Taxus baccata has resulted in the isolation of several taxoids including taxol (1) 10-deacetyl-baccatin III (2) and 2-deacetoxytaxinine J (3) along with different lignans (6 and 7) and simple phenolics (8, 9, 10, 11 and 12). The occurrence of 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-butane-2-one and 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-trans-but 3-ene-2-one (8) in Taxus species is reported for the first time. The $^{13}C-NMR$ spectral data of two rearranged taxiod constituents, brevifoliol (4) and 13-decinnamoyltaxchinin B (5) are presented. The acid-catalyzed decomposition of taxol has been discussed. The synthesis of other two constituents, rhododendrol (10) and hibalactone (7) has been described.
