Geodae-Uksae 1 is a variety of Miscanthus sacchariflorus recently discovered in Korea. It is being mass-cultivated for use as energy crop due to its superior productivity, as high as 30 ton/ha/yr for the dry mass. This study investigates the method of producing biochar and bio-oil from the crop using slow pyrolysis. Especially, the study focused on assessing the biochar properties for its application to soil to improve soil quality and sequestrate carbon. Using an electrically heated packed bed reactor, the products of slow pyrolysis from Geodae-Uksae 1 were produced over a temperature range of $300-700^{\circ}C$ with a heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$. The biochar, condensable vapor (bio-oil) and residual gases were characterized for the physical and chemical properties. It was concluded that the ideal temperature for pyrolysis to produce biochar is $500^{\circ}C$.

This paper was shown the simulation of electric field distribution of globular dielectric for design of ideal packed-bed plasma reactor. When discharge gap between the electrodes and input voltage are each 20[mm]. 10000[V] in the atmosphere, the results of simulation to the electric field was measured stronger at globular dielectric of $\phi$5[mm] than 1$\phi$[mm] and 3.33$\phi$[mm]. And the maximum electric field or globular dielectric with $\phi$10[mm] was increased about 5[%] to maximum electric field of globular dielectric with $\phi$5[mm] in the atmosphere. when dielectric constant of globular dielectric is 100, it was simulated about 90[%] of maximum electric field of globular dielectric over 1000 dielectric constant. Ana the highest electric field appeared as globular electric was parallel structure with the other globular dielectric side by side of the globular dielectric and connected to electrodes.
The selective catalytic experiments using both sulfated/sulfur-free titania and V2O5/TiO2 catalysts have been conducted for NO reduction by NH3 in a packed-bed, down-flow reactor. The sulfated and vanadia loaded titania exhibited higher activity for NO removal than the sulfur-free catalysts, where > 90% NO removal was achieved over the sulfated V2O5/TiO2 catalyst between 280∼500 C. The surface structure of vanadia species on the catalyst surface played a critical role in the high performance of catalysts in which the existence of monomeric/polymeric vanadate is revealed by Raman spectra studies. Water vapor and SO2 were added to the reacting system for the catalyst deactivation tests. At higher temperatures (T ≥ 350 C), little deactivation was observed over the sulfated V2O5/TiO2 catalysts, showing good durability against SO2 and water vapor, which is compared with deactivation at lower temperatures.

The objectives were to compare the biodegradable threshold concentrations of phenol with the different composition of the influent carbon source and examine the SMA (Specific Methanogenic Activity)and the possibility of simultaneous removal of high-strength organics and nitrogen compounds in UASB(Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) - PBR(Packed Bed Reactor) process. The results showed that UASB reactors were efficient to remove phenol and phenol + glucose from synthetic wastewater. At phenol conc, of 600 mg/L and SCOD conc. of 2100 mg/L in UASB reactor(with only phenol as substrate), the removal efficiencies of phenol and SCOD were over 99% and 93% respectively, under MLVSS of 20 g. The activity of microorganism was $0.112g\;phenol/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$, $0.351g\;SCOD/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$. The gas production rate was $0.115L/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$ and $CH_4$ content in gas was about 70%. At phenol conc. of 760 mg/L and SCOD conc. of 4300 mg/L in UASB reactor( with phenol + glucose as substrates), the removal efficiencies of phenol and of SCOD were over 99% and 90% respectively, under MLVSS of 20 g. The activity of microoganism was $0.135g\;phenol/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$, $0.696g\;SCOD/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$. The gas production rate was $0.257L/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$ and $CH_4$ content in gas was about 70%. Serum bottle test showed that the activity of granule was inhibited over 1600 mg/L phenol conc, and denitrification and methanogenesis simultaneously took place in UASB granules under co-substrates conditions. PBR reactor packed with cilium type media, was efficient in nitrification. In condition of $0.038kg\;NH_4-N/m^3-media{\cdot}d$. 10~12 mg/L phenol conc. and 200~500 mg/L SCOD conc., nitrification efficiency was over 90% and phenol removal efficiency was over 98%.

In this paper, the heat-transfer characteristics of steam reforming in an annular reactor are presented. Heat is supplied by the catalytic combustion of syn-gas. The thermal behaviors of exothermic and endothermic reactions in a directly coupled concentric-tube packed-bed reactor were investigated experimentally. The gas mixture supplied for catalytic combustion consisted of the off-gas emitted from MCFC anode. Methane in steam at a suitable S/C (steam-to-carbon) ratio was used in the reforming reactions. On the basis of the experimental results, a simple simulation was performed to predict the temperature profile required in the reforming side of the reactor to achieve optimum hydrogen yield. The results of this study may be utilized as reference data in future studies for further development of coupled reactors.
For continuous production of galactooligosaccharides(GOS), $\beta-galactosidase$ with h1gh transgalactosylation activity from Bacillus sp. A 4442 was Immobilized onto $Diaion^{TM}$ HPA 75(styrene-divinylbenzene resin). The parameters influencing enzyme immobilization were scrutinized in order to maximize immobilization yield while minimizing enzyme inactivation. The optimum conditions turned out to be: Tris buffer concentration 30 mM, pH 8.0, contact time at room temperature 3 hr, and enzyme loading 25 mg protein/g resin. Both the thermal stability and the operational stability of immobilized enzyme were markedly enchanced by the treatment with 0.5% glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. Under the experimental conditions established, the yield of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ immobilization was 40% or more and the activity of the immobilized enzyme ca. 200 U/g resin. When a packed-bed reactor was employed to continuously convert lactose to GOS, the specific production, which refers to as the amount of commercially valuable GOS produced by a unit amount of immobilized ${\beta}-galactosidase$, was found to be ca. 300 g GOS/g carrier.

The effects of input substrate concentration and dilution rate on mass transfer resistance in the operation of immobilized cell reactors were investigated using Rhodospirillum rubrum KS-301 immobilized by Ca alginate as reactor element and glucose as growth-limiting substrate. The kinetic parameters were obtained to estimate effectiveness factors. In the packed-bed reactor, internal mass transfer resistance was predominating although external resistance could not be neglected. The overall effectiveness factor was decreased with increase of dilution rate. In the continuous stirred-tank reactor, external resistance was nearly neglected and the overall effectiveness factor was not affected by dilution rate. In this experiment the overall effectiveness factors in PBR and CSTR were estimated to be 0.70 and 0.71 at D$_{i}$ = 0.2/h, R = 0.15 cm, and S$_{i}$ : 1.0g/L, respectively.

We review here research and development progress achieved in US Plasma Chamber technology roughly over the last decade. In particular, we focus on two major programs carried out in the US: the APEX project (1998-2003) and the US ITER TBM activities (2003-present). The APEX project grew out of the US fusion program emphasis in the late 1990s on more fundamental science and innovation. APEX was commissioned to investigate novel technology concepts for achieving high power density and high temperature reactor coolants. In particular, the idea of liquid walls and the related research is described here, with some detailed examples of liquid metal and molten salt magnetohydrodynamic and free surface effects on flow control and heat transfer. The ongoing US ITER Test Blanket Module (TBM) program is also described, where the current first wall/blanket concepts being considered are the dual coolant lead lithium concept and the solid breeder helium cooled concepts, both using ferritic steel structures. The research described for these concepts includes both thermofluid MHD issues for the liquid metal coolant in the DCLL, and thermomechanical issues for ceramic breeder packed pebble beds in the solid breeder concept. Finally, future directions for ongoing research in these areas are described.
When the cells of yeast K35 were immobilized in Ca-alginate gel, cell concentration and viability decreased as alginate concentration increased. Considering the results, 2% (w/v) Ca-alginate concentration would be suitable. Among various concentrations of additives and cross-lin-king agent, the addition of 1.67% (w/v) of bentonite together with 0.33% (v/v) of glutaraldehyde (ABG bead) resulted in the highest ethanol production of 1.8%(w/v), using YPD medium containing 2% glucose. ABG bead seemed to be more resistant to phosphate ion than Ca-alginate bead. 0.33%(w/v) of phosphate was a proper concentration for the ethanol production by ABG bead. Scanning electron microscopic observation depicted that the immobilized cells on the bead surface were coated by alginate gel and that the cells in the internal bead were cross-linked with alginate matrix. When repeated-batch culture was performed with ABG bead for 40 days in a packed-bed reactor, ethanol concentration of about 90~110 g/l-gel was maintained. Cell viability was maintained around 70%, and outgrowing cell concentration was below 6.3% of total cell concentration. Consequently, the results showed that ABG head was a potential carrier for continuous production of ethanol compared to conventional Ca-alginate bead.
